    Back in the autumn of 1972, I was deep into my second year of studying compositional structure and technique. I was directed to select a milestone work for a thesis. I chose The Ninth. After countless days, watching the seasons change to winter and then spring, working at wee hours when only a persistent owl would always seem to come by, one might I felt this work instead of hearing it. It truly lifted me into the stars and then beyond. Part of me was left there, because when I awoke back into this realm, I knew something was different. Now, at the most challenging of times, it is as if I get a "calling" from very far away. And it is wondrous. It is hopeful. It is peaceful. So very full of love. And each time, I remember entering that portal on that night, long ago. And I am thankful.

    Killing singing. Beethoven wasn't thinking at all how difficult it is for choir singers, even for professionals.

    • @raboin1

      Mozart was way more demanding on singers.

    • @jasonhurd4379

      When a violinist complained to Beethoven of the technical difficulties in one of his quartets, the composer shouted 'Do you think I am concerned with your wretched fiddle when the inspiration strikes me?' He didn't give a damn about technical difficulty. If you want simple technical demands, go play a Telemann sonata. If you want a rewarding musical and spiritual experience, Beethoven's your man.

    • @RainerRilke3
      @RainerRilke3 Před 4 lety +7

      It's not that hard really. As a conducting student who's sung this a good couple of times, I'd say most of the difficulty comes just from Beethoven being totally uninstructed in singing and also completely deaf at the time of writing this so a lot of the vocal parts are just plain awkward to sing at times. He was truly a genius, but he wasn't the best at writing for choir.

    • @Robinwhiteart
      @Robinwhiteart Před 4 lety +7

      When one is singing something like this, one is caught up in it! One is usually exhausted upon completion of the performance but as exhaustion goes, it usually feels worth the effort unless one's director is a total arse and is mean as well. Otherwise it is uplifting. The experience of singing "inside" a group, being in tune, hitting harmonics is better than just listening. And just listening is very uplifting!

    • @erpollock
      @erpollock Před 3 lety +3

      The soprano line is extremely high, and the G and A notes are solitary, nothing leads up to them, making it very difficult to sing without the preparation of a lead-up.

    I love the fugue that takes place at 16:01, the orchestra and the choir complement each other in such a way that it seems like a divine song and the faster tempo is easy to recognize, simply Beethoven.

I sing (i am not a professional), it is so difficult. It is possible, but my head is spinning! My engine was revved up to go fast, then they want to go slow!!! It is def not easy! Great music, though!!!!

      It's quite humorous that, whenever I feel like a piece is being taken too fast and check who is conducting, it's often the late maestro Abbado, as is the case here. I don't mean at all to disrespect his talent and his legacy as an artist, but he did have a tendency to rush at times.

      +professor de portuga do YT The bottom part is a simplification of the orchestra, intended so a pianist can perform it to help a choir practice without being a virtuoso (though he would have to be quite skilled). Liszt wrote an awesome transcription of this for actual solo piano, I recommend you take a look at it :D

      Franz Liszt made all 9 piano transcriptions for Beethoven's symphonies. You should take a look at them!

    Never been a big fan of Beethoven. Too much simple parallel motion in the harmonies, which is quite evident in the simplified score here. But the themes and vocal work are superb.
