- Ultima III: Exodus is the third game in the series of Ultima role-playing video games. Exodus is also the name of the game's principal antagonist. It is the final installment in the "Age of Darkness" trilogy. Released in 1983, it was the first Ultima game published by Origin Systems. Originally developed for the Apple II, Exodus was eventually ported to 13 other platforms, including a NES/Famicom remake.
Ultima III revolves around Exodus, the spawn of Mondain and Minax (from Ultima I and Ultima II, respectively), threatening the world of Sosaria. The player travels to Sosaria to defeat Exodus and restore the world to peace. Ultima III hosts further advances in graphics, particularly in animation, adds a musical score, and increases the player's options in gameplay with a larger party and more interactivity with the game world

Same. I remembered playing it on our Atari 400. Saving it to the cassette tape was agonizingly slow. We also had an Atari 2600. Tried playing it once in 2017 on an emulator. Combat was very slow, so I gave up.
I had an Atari 800xl with a 1050 disk drive that I had to run without the case and a house fan blowing on it. Ultima 3 could heat up your drive so much you would lose saves if you weren’t careful! 🤣

Best version and best game of the series imo. I love the battle system here.
I played the mess out of it in 1985 on my trusty Apple //e. The PC EGA graphics look way better than what I remember. I did have a Mocking board so the music was awesome.

Grew up with the NES one. This game got me in to RPGs in spite of the fact I had no idea where to go or what I was doing lol.

Incredible game. I found the C64 with white icons for the figures was somehow in much better taste. I played both C64 and later this PC version and was really out off by coloured icons that someone overtook the imagination, but I was grateful that it was ported of course.
Lol the PC did not have this music back then. The PC also only had 4 color CGA graphics back then. 16 color EGA didn’t come out until 1984 and decent sound cards for the pc weren’t around then. In any case, this is not what Ultima 3 looked and sounded like on a 1983 PC. This looks and sounds more like the Amiga version.
Yeah, I think this is a later edition released in 1986, If I remember correctly the first 3 Ultimas were recreated this way, while also porting them to other 16-bit computers.
Back in 1984, the Commodore 64 was the best platform for this game, IMHO. Today, you can buy the GoG version for a song, and it comes with a patcher to add better graphics and MIDI music.

Loved this game. What is the "F" stat with the numbers next to it on the right of each character, under Level? I totally forget, been years.
It is how much food they have. They eat a piece every so often and it decrements. If you watch the end part, he didn't buy more before going to the end castle and Cassandra ran out and started taking damage from starving.
no soundscards yet, is this the pc speaker? Unless the music was overlayed over it after.
Later upgrade patch for Ultima 3 dos that adds midi music and better sound effects. For Sound Blaster no PC speaker . Also graphics mode EGA, VGA ect you can choose via setup

Does anybody know how to turn off the damned music in the C-64 version?
God I hate the standard MIDI renditions. If you use one of the forks of DOSBOX with good MT32 emulation it can sound alright, but this is ear-grating especially when put against the OG Mockingboard soundtrack.
Luckily I found a way to get that music with the PC Upgrade version by getting Tandy 1000 Sound (A 3-voice chip, like the Mockingboard) drivers for the SETM utility used by the Upgrade patch. Bada bing, glorious sound in the original form it was designed for, a 3-voice sound chip.
Though at that point, with all the upgrade patches and custom driver nonsense, I may as well have just emulated the OG Apple II version. Or the Amiga version, or the FM-Towns version, or the C64 version, or-
Jesus Origin really did port these games to everything they possibly could. I swear Sonic 1 has less ports.
I have a Tandy 1000 SX and 1000 TL either of which I would love to play this pc upgrade on but from what I've read it's not possible and only supports EGA anyway. How did you get it working? This would indeed sound fantastic on a Tandy.
