Singer-writer and 1970s television star Mac Davis wrote this song and gave it to Elvis Presley to record in 1969. Mac Davis passed away yesterday on Sept 29, 2020 at age 78. Rest in Peace.

He was the greatest! He grew up in a very poor family but he never forgot his roots! He became the greatest star but he stayed humple and very generous man, even to people he didn't know! He was unique personality!
Thank you for being open-minded to the song! I remember hearing this song on the radio when it came out.....wow Elvis! He never sang this kind of song. This was very controversial for it’s time. Social injustice...looking the other way...not caring about each other and the cycle keeps going on! He sang love songs....and to stick his neck out like this was very revealing about the true person he was. Yes, he grew up very poor and understood what it was like ......mac davis wrote it and was looking for someone to sing it....know one would touch it...late 60’s and Elvis did....Manager did not want him to do it and did it anyway....it must have ment a lot to him to do it.
And do you notice how at the end of the song he picks it up and throws it in the audience's faces? The man! Eternal Elvis!
Elvis was dirt poor all his childhood, he was also known to be super loyal to his band, if people didn't allow them in the hotel he wouldn't stay in that hotel either.

He is actually singing about how things just don’t change. Things keep repeating themselves over and over.. constant cycle.. think about it, this was sung in the 70’s and still relevant today in 2020.. 50 years later. Like the song by The Who, “Won’t get Fooled Again”... the lyrics “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” .. just like politicians, they tell you how much they care for, and all the good they’re going to do for us, the common folks.. but do things ever really change? If they really did, this song wouldn’t be as relevant today as it was a half century ago...

Chuck D, from Public Enemy, talking out of his ass years back, said Elvis was straight up racist in Fight The Power, and I think a generation of young kids believed it. I was already a fan before that, so I knew he was full of it, but I heard many people say they believed it (with no real evidence). Chuck tried to walk it back later on saying he was just tired of people calling him the King because he had recorded Little Richard and Chuck Berry songs and was tired of Elvis getting their shine. Ok that's cool, I can understand that, but it was ignorant to flat out call him racist, as if it was his fault what people thought and said about him! Just shows that words can greatly influence people's perception, even when they're not true.
People don't throw shade at Frank Sinatra for recording New York, New York, which was written for and performed by Liza Minnelli....singers sang the songs the producers and studios gave them, because performers didn't control music back then. Chuck D not only wasn't a musician, not only did he never know about how the music industry worked, but he never acknowledged that he wasn't the one single authority about the industry.
He also said John Wayne was a racist I don't know how much of that is true because I've never seen John Wayne doing anything racist as a matter of fact he always had black people in his movies

It wasn't a story...it was a message.
The song was originally titled, The Vicious Circle I believe. It was written by Mac Davis and was inspired by a black friend he had as a child that lived in the ghetto. It is about how life in the ghetto perpetuates a cycle of poverty, violence and death for many people. Still true today.

He was a once in a generation talent and I was just a little kid when he passed away. However, his music was played a lot around the house growing up which is probably why I love his music. ELVIS manager, Tom Parker, Didn't want Elvis to record this song. In the ELVIS 2022 movie we learned that once a Reverend once told Elvis "that to dangerous to say, SING", so he did!

His hunger burned is both literal and figurative.
This could have easily been this mans life had he not had
the guts, drive, ambition and luckily talent to escape it.
His hunger burned also to give his mother a life better than
the one she had to live.
They were share croppers, and she did everything from pick cotton,
scrub floors on her hands and knees and empty bed pans.
Their poverty wasn't the streets of Chicago but the back woods poverty
of the South where blacks and poor whites were stuck on the wrong side
of the tracks with no way out. He, like you did not accept that.

Did you know he was instrumental in the Pearl Harbor Memorial becoming a reality. in 1961 when he was like 26 years old ( which was the average age of the poor souls there) They raised $ 62,000 to get the Memorial rolling. It was he who DAMANDED all proceeds go towards it. He PAID all of the acts that performed and he even BOUGHT the first ticket for $100 PLUS included an extra $5,000 . Remember he himself is a Military Vet, Serving in the US Army. He got out a Sgt.
