- The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún is a charming yet haunting gothic fairy tale about an unusual family searching for a place to belong.
This video was made in response to Pause and Select’s NOVID challenge. I may have fudged the instructions a little here by discussing both The Girl from the Other Side’s manga AND it’s OVA, but since neither have an video essay on them yet, I feel it still follows the spirit of the challenge.
Please also note that The Girl from the Other Side’s OVA will be legally available to watch as a part of Japan’s Online Film Festival 2020-2021. Check the JFF’s schedule to see when/if it’s available in your country. For the US, you can watch the OVA on 12/11/20.

A central theme of Nagabe’s work is different forms of unlikely love. Girl From the Other Side to me is the story of forbidden companionship, and the way we can’t control our hearts and where they guide us, no matter the danger. The Teacher’s heart guides him back to Shiva even though he’s a cursed monster and she is a human. I would recommend reading his other manga Love From the Other Side, as it’s a short story collection all about love as well! Set in a similar universe as Girl From the Other Side. It’s really good!

The manga's artstyle is absolutely goregous and honestly it reminds me a little of Houseki no Kuni. WIT studio really did an awesome job capturing it.

The Girl from the Other Side is getting an anime next year, so hopefully it'll be a faithful adaption that you could watch. Trying audio books for novels might be another option if you haven't tried them yet. I think some comics are also starting to have audio books/a read-to-me option, but I hope more books, comics, and manga become more accessible for folks with visual / reading impairments so they can enjoy stories too.

Yes!! That's what I meant by talking about its OVA (original video animation), but it would be neat if the series eventually got it own full on anime adaptation for the whole story.

@@lxxy05 Yes, I just saw the anime announcement yesterday!! I was confused at first, but I guess that's what the OP must've been referring to. 😅 The manga is officially ending this year in April, so I think the anime announcement actually coincided with the announcement of the series ending. Hell's Paradise also just recently did something similar.

It came as a part of a bundle for one of the volumes and ocassionally plays at film festivals, but you might be able to find the OVA on vimeo.
I am so confused. I literally JUST watched this show, and I did not see the scenes where they were making the raspberry tarts, or where he pats the chair, or where the little bird is transformed into the monstrous one. I bought the English version on iTunes. Where did you find the full version?
The footage is actually from the 2019 OVA! It's like only 10 minute's long and occasionally it plays at cultural festivals. I don't think it's currently on any English streaming platforms, but you can find some of the clips on Sakugabooru.
