- We've said it before, and we'll say it again and again, we are a General Repair Facility. Generally we repair everything. Now what have we HERE? Well it's something we've literally never worked on before a misbehaving Toyota 2UZ-FE V8!
This truck was previously at another local shop to get this cranks no start situation resolved however they didn't have any luck so we have "Inherited" it. First off let's verify a few things. Spark? Check. Fuel? Check. Air? Check. Engine codes? NONE. Why is there no fire and boom boom?! Well let's find out shall we? - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Tanks for giving me a preview on my 2004.
The important thing for all of us who do mechanical stuff: Check for Edsel Murphy sitting on your shoulder. Carl, TX
Thats a unicorn,Tundras dont break down.
Watching you drop things had me laughing so hard. I call that entertainment because it's SO TRUE!! That stuff happens to me all the time. I hate when you drop a socket or a smaller wrench onto the engine and never hear it hit the floor. That sucks.
Glad our pain and frustration can entertain you! There's not much worse in the life of a mechanic than dropping a tool and NOT hearing it tingtingting off the floor. Unfortunately, that's wrenchin!
@@LucoreAuto You got THAT right lol
he talks about Denso spark plugs but installs Gates water pump on it LOL
Great work on the Toyota. Rich, you’re a great teacher when it comes to diagnosing and fixing about anything. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks Ray this one threw some odd challenges at us given it had essentially NO information to start from. But we're kinda known for fixing the stuff others can't or won't ;)
Just so you know, you helped an old Okla boy change the timing belt on 4.7 Tundra.Hats off to you sir.Ty.
I laughed out loud when the mirror fell in the drink. Just my luck also
Toyota OEM manual requires before you remove exsiting Timing belt, confirm its in correct allignment, w/ TDC on the crank and the 2 cams alligned w/ timing marks. Then, rotate the Crank pulley ~ 45 degrees past the 0 degree timing mark , this position provides a less "tension position on the cams" so after you remove the timing belt, so the spring tension on the Cams do not cause the Cams to shift violently after removal of the original timng belt.
Great work my friend, sure you made someone very happy
I can hear Uncle Bucko screaming....LACK OF MAINTENANCE!!🤣🤣🤣 Nice diag and fix Rich.
The 2UZ-FE is an interference engine. At 40 degrees off for the camshaft there'd be no compression and the valve train would be damaged. These timing belts generally don't jump time unless the tensioner fails. The problem you're seeing usually results from a botched timing belt job.
Mine jumped due to a squirrel setting up shop in the timing belt cover. God damn squirrels. An acorn caused the belt to jump 5 teeth. Got a faulty camshaft position sensor code. After a few days of trouble shooting I gave up brought it to a friend who noticed the belt jumped and saw tons of squirrel debris in the timing belt compartment. 😢
Good diagnosis skills Rich on finding the no start problem. That is going to be a returning customer and verbal referral for new customers. Keep up the good skills and proper repairs and try to pass them onto the new guys that are willing to learn and excel.
Thanks John. A big part of why we do these videos is to share with our customers here locally, there's no better way to be transparent about what you need to do and how you do it. As a new customer hopefully they appreciate it, we certainly aren't ever upset about earning a new loyal customer!
Just came across this video and your channel. I just purchased a 2007 Sequoia Limited with 200K miles, but it's a 2 owner southern (Texas) no rust vehicle that appears to have a lot of highway miles. Anyway just trying to learn what I can about the real world issues and repairs, especially the 4.7 VVT engine.
I must say I am hooked, your straight forward approach and laid back attitude, with real, but drama free conversation and explanation is right up my alley.✌
A master mechanic par excellence. Can fix it all.
Good job on the Tundra. Like said should be good for another 100,00 miles. Thanks for sharing Rich !
Another success story. Love your work.
Thanks Ross, we don't win 'em all but we sure as heck try!
Nice work Rich
Austin's sitting back there thinking the Damm shops on fire. LOL!!
Toyota trucks run fo4ever i love em
Those engines are really great.
I was watching you put on the belt and heard you reading what it said on the belt and I asked myself will he do left and right from the driver's perspective? And lo and behold lol. Been there done that.
That Jamaica 🇯🇲 truck 🚚 in the back ❤️ big up
Way to figure out the problem, nice work Rich!!
Thanks Billy! Fortunately we had a little sprinkling of luck on this one too and it didn't fire up to terrible noises.
@@LucoreAuto It was funny how you got smoked right out of your office at first though!! LOL
Good job time consuming job.interferance motor.done it twice my self at 182,000 truck won't quit. Thanks good videos.
Another job well done.
Thanks Bryan, we certainly were happy this repair didn't end in horrible engine sounds!
I get half way through this vid and think to myself: " This is going to be a first time where Gravity does not get him". Then about 15 seconds later after thinking that...Bloop Bloop goes the light 😂 I should not laugh, Myself...I`ll set a wrench down and not even a minute later be mad cause I can`t find it 🤣
Being a 4.7 Toyota engine, I'm surprised the other shop didn't check the timing. (For obvious belt issues)
Good job figuring that one out.
Took some doing but we got there!
Nice job , I was going to say take a fuel sample
That is a nice Truck too
I literally have this problem right now in my 03. Spent a whole day checking every possible thing it could be, leaving only timing belt as the possible solution.
They definitely got lucky! When they introduced VVT they were interference. Usually takes higher rpm to have contact.
Cool 😎 !!
Nice find Rich! Chalk one up for Lucore Automotive!
We don't win 'em but we sure as heck try!
Yes it is classified as interference bit mine has notches in the piston for the valve to clear
HOWdy LUCORE,
Not much of a TUNDRA Fan --- but = I'll give you a THUMB's UP
I always LEARN something watching your VIDEOS = Belt Replacement at 5 years or 90,000 miles !!!

So my used 01 tundra timing belt broke 2 weeks after I bought it. Totally sucks! Anyway I'm in process of changing the timing belt and hoping everything is okay...
My question though is how do I fix the timing before putting in the new belt? As you read in the instructions says not to turn crank or cams without a belt....
The Non VVTI 4.7 can survive a timing belt snap, probably not the updated motor though with the VVTI.
Just had a flashback from 6 years ago, same motor. guy almost didn't do it because he would be on the hook for the hour diag once we started.
If a belt jumps. Worn Belt? Bad Tensioner? Combination of both. That was my guess at the 9 min mark. I own a 2003, I pushed mine to 105K miles for 1st timing belt because of finances and I was nervous then. Great video, Thanks for sharing.
Since the timing belt skipped at crank it probably saved the engine from damage
Can these newer vehicles possibly have any more components?
AISIN makes the OEM parts, and they do sell the timing belt kit with OEM water pump.. GATES is ok, but not recomended for Toyota. It absolutely is a interference engine. if it jumped a thread or so will be enough to throw off the computer and timing but should not damage the engine. but it will not run or start either. you can turn it manually to reset the TDC and check the timing marks on the crank,, there are several video on the job.
Was all the pulleys/tensioner's replaced, if not those will be the next things to go out. With that many miles (160,000) they need replaced.
What did you determine? Was the issue with the tail pipe smoke? I have a 2004 tundra with the same engine, doing the same thing
Try some seafoam in the fuel to decarbon the cats. Cheaper than other additives for carbon buildup. Might be another brand in your neighborhood.
Is that a similar engine as the 4.7 Mercedes engine in the early dodge Dakota
Fuel filter
Rich I live in Virginia and have a 2004 Mercury Sable with a V6. It only has 110,000 miles on it. it has been to 2 different shops and it has new plugs, wires and coil pack replaced twice but it is still throwing a random misfire code. Do you have any thoughts as to what is wrong with it?
nice job rich win win chicken dinner
My tundra has 350k and my sequioa does as well
So the owner got almost twice as many miles out of the timing belt as they should have
The VVTi 4.7 V8s are interference engines but not the earlier 4.7 V8s
Well you could leave that ac o there just pull 3 bolts out of it .2 long ones and 1 shorter bolt
So do you think that Engine is really interference? Or it have to snapped first ????????
Timing belts on Toyota supposed to be changed 60,000 or 90,000 miles
I had faith in ya rich
Thanks Bruce! Had a little luck sprinkled in with this one too
Yup interference , I have broken valves from a job to prove it. Lol. Those Iforce cam seals are terrible to put in ! Hope to never do those again.
Do you get a better discount when you buy those lights by the gross?
Honestly not sure we just buy these like everyone else 😀 We SHOULD probably reach out to the company about product placement sponsorship though!
@@LucoreAuto It was a Joke in reference to how many you guys lose and destroy the lights. Who wrote this response anyway?
@@handyman75657 I have 4 of them. well, 3 now. only 1 has failed after a year of using/abusing them.
How long did it take you to change timing belt ?
Tining belt replacement on this engine is a 6 hour job minimum, and thats if you have all the tools and you completely understand the Timing Belt allignment procedure. FYI... the AC compressor is NOT required to be disconnected. Just loosen the AC bracket that bolts the comnpressor to the engine block, towards rear of engine, 1 of three bolts. The 2 front of course require removal, this 3rd bolt just loosen to give you play to pull out the Fan bracket support.
im sorry but how is that engine fixed with that kind of white smoke? clearly it needs a head gasket replacement and heads rectification !
He prob charged him 8 hrs of labor when it only took 23 min and 31 seconds!!! Damn mechanics
That timing belt job is a big job. It probably took close to that
No start at that miles. Means wasnt cared
That 4.7 is not running right
You need to hire a lead mechanic lol just
Clean the cats 🐈
As soon as you said what the compression was odd said timing belt an 10 sec later you said same thing .
You're on your A Tech game then 😉 interesting thing is that none of the onboard computers/sensors caught this?
If it would have started probably would have had cam / crank code but not always . Been turning wrenches for 30yrs now . Seen a bunch of crazy things and the simple things will get most techs definitely not saying this was a simple one but it's one to check on them
And up need electric ratchet
4,7 and 5.7 arent interferance engines
Timing belts should never have been invented. I only buy vehicles with timming chains. Had 355k on a 98 Bonneville with original chain. They hold up.
