  • My first lesson to become a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI). Flying with my friend Mark who is a CFI.
This is my third time riding in the right seat of an airplane, and first time actually trying to provide instructions. Please keep in mind, editing removes a lot of context and Mark is pretending to be a student.

Thanks Phillip, it's been a long road since that first lesson you gave me in 2017

Kudos to you. This makes me realize how challenging it is to teach well.

When my son was in the CAP he took lessons to get his pilot license, but he didn't finish the program. It was a particularly hot day in Florida and he had just eaten a greasy grilled cheese sandwich and his instructor took him up for a lesson. It was bumpy that day and just as they landed he upchucked the sandwich. He never went back. 🤮

So you have to teach a person ‘the reason why’. When you had the guy perform the mag check, you didn’t explain to him what the mag was, what the mag did, that there were two mags, why there were two mags, and what the mag test was actually doing. Of course I would think that long before a student was performing this test, they would have been taught in the class room this information. Point I’m trying to make is that when you teach, explain what it is you’re doing, why you’re doing it, the effect it has, and why it has that effect. When a person understands the reasons why, then the procedure will make more sense and will likely stick in their mind. Otherwise, just going through the steps to perform the test, will not likely mean anything to the student. Hope my explanation makes sense.

Thank you for this, I think the hard part to overcome here in this scenario is teaching someone who already knows. And may miss that they are not supposed to know. But he did play the part really well, this is great advice, and I need more practice
