Yeah, sounds very like Yoko Takahashi - just needs a little bit more "power" and a little bit "higher ceiling" in the voice...
She's actually a better singer, the original singer has a weedy weak voice inappropriate for such a powerful angry song.

I've always wondered why an anime like Evangelion, which is really dark and mind-screwing, had such a groovy/catchy opening. One more way to screw with our heads I guess?
Anyways! Once again an excellent cover. I'm gonna listen to dat shiet in a loop, cuz dat's gud shiet.
TheWalker10 the story is that Hideaki Anno wanted to use classical music for the opening (can’t remember the specific piece right now), but the higher-ups blocked that idea because they thought it would confuse viewers, so they opted for a J-Pop opening. On one hand, the classical opening would have been less confusing than the show itself, but on the other hand, we got A Cruel Angel’s Thesis.
There's other examples of this. For example, this is the opening to Narutaru (absolutely _no_ relation to Naruto :P). From watching just that (or just the first episode or two) you'd think the show had a completely different theme from what you actually get (hint: shit gets dark. _Really_ dark).

Well if you actually take the effort of translating the lyrics, the lyrics are... melancholic but with a glimpse of hope, also you have to take into context the opening sequence this is played over, it's unlike the usual mecha anime opening at the tine where the hero is in your face and everything but Shinji is brooding and sad.
Though yeah, this pop opening is what we got most because of executive meddling.
EVA actually started out as a shounen/mecha. Only halfway through that the creator suffered depression and it showed in his work. And then the studio ran out of budget.
@@Leahs-tj8gn The whole shtick of MadoMagi was to surprise the heck out of everyone with the not-so-cute stuff. So the point in this case is invalid, but still a nice reference.
