I still can't believe that this is Tom's first game. Natural role-player.
This is the 4th time watching the Chain thus far and the Nails-as-god arc is just some of the best roleplaying I've seen.
Lars calling Ajax a weiner gives me life.
I thinks Copper’s line “I think I’ve seen four of him” is the absolute best line in the episode! It’s hilarious, and he completely legitimizes Nails being in 2 places at once while the others just gloss over it as pure humor. SO GOOD!

I just put together, halfway through this episode, that 'Nails' Is wearing the glasses as a character prop. Very cool.
Phil does such a fantastic job playing the commander. "Don't think about it, just do it."
God I LOVE the atmosphere of this ship. It's so alien and reminds me of something like Metroid. Stoked for more of this campaign.
There's a lot of rewatch value here. Hearing Anna or someone else go "Blimey" in the pre-OD episodes is funny. Also I notice Sweet's character now that I've seen more of Phil's play. I feel like his street smart background really shows in his command style.

Sweets clearly isn't an idealist, he only cares for his family the chain.
Something I find brilliant with the character buildup of Nails, is that I feel Tom and Matt corroborated to have Tom mostly casting Firebolts at will in previous combats as a setup for him casting fireballs in the same way later. Nice touch.
Nails "seeing" Matt draw the map reminded me of the time "This world isn't real" became a meme in an evil campaign I was in. My Cthulhu warlock had the Pact of the Tome, so he had a Tome of Forbidden Knowledge. At some point, pretty much out of no where, my character psychically tells the party assassin "This world isn't real. We are just being controlled my people sitting on the floor around a plastic mat."
That's dope as fuck
One of my party's characters researched so deep that they saw his player and another character that player played in the past.
One of the final lines of my last campaign, after the players finally cast the spell "Remake Plane", was as follows.
Sometimes the actor dreamed it was an adventurer, on the surface of a world covered by fog, ruled by one ruled by a curse. The days were harrowing; there was much to do; and death resulted in the tearing of paper. (And with that I tore my character sheet in half)
I love how nails is pretty much Dark Phoenix this entire time.
I love how nails is wearing mirrored sunglasses to represent his eyes in game!

Watching this a second time during the Chain-break. The Chain is my favorite D&D Stream and this just might be my favorite Chain episode so far. Nails talking just gives me goosebums.
I am extraordinarily late to this game, but I am enjoying this campaign A LOT! Thanks everyone!

This plot was from the first episode (aired) of the original Star trek. Check out the episode titled "Charlie" It features the ship crossing an energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy which knocks out a crewman named Charlie. He revives with silver eyes and amazing esper powers, and develops megalomania.

I know this is several months late, but you're not exactly correct.
You're confusing the episode Charlie X with the second pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before.
They both involve someone with god-like powers, but the one you're referencing is the pilot, with Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell, not Charlie.

man no offense to the other players (they're all great) but Töm has been bringing the energy since episode 1. The first two episodes were pretty dang awkward but its felt like Töm has been keeping up the vibes and making everyone more comfortable with being goofy and getting in character which is really impressive and admirable for a brand new player and has resulted in this episode being fantastic and really feeling like everyone was getting into the groove of running a streamed dnd game .
Copper and Big Cat are by far my favorite character. The thought of a goblin riding a displaced beast is the coolest thing
I really like the interplay between Matt and Lars. Actually, the levity in general at the table is welcome. I find Critical Role can take themselves so seriously that at some point they stopped being gamers and just started being actors which is frankly less fun to watch. I like that the people in The Chain are still just a group of people having a good time playing D and D which is exactly what I want to see.
I mean...they each bring different skill sets to the table. They are actors regardless if theyre working or not so thats gonna shine through. These guys are gamers, and it shows.
It's literally why I can't watch critical roll. it's 8 (?) people who all desperately want to be the centre of attention at all times!
I can't even watch clips of it 'cos it pisses me off so much, I remember one where some camp dude had a wish spell and jesus, he milked that so hard the cow died of dehydration!

I recently got roped into being DM and I've got a few weeks before running my first game. Only ever played a 3 hour taster of DnD. Seeing this stream has got me soo pumped.

I love Matt, I love his content and I love this show. It's really cool to see a more normal game of D&D being streamed.
But Matt blowing his dice each time before rolling, for some odd reason, irritates me on the level of someone repeatedly poking me XD

@ 3:07:00 Spells without to hit rolls require users to be able to see their target unless otherwise stated in the description. I do like Matt trying to let her do it by making a grapple attempt at disadvantage. I may use that in my games if a similar scenario comes up.

Loving the show, but I have to point something out. The music you made with your synthwave can suddenly spike with high pitched noises, and these give me painful headaches. Not saying you should change this for my sake, but might be something to take into consideration for the future.
Yeah I'm glad they said they're doing an audio fix between this episode and the next one. Should really help with the levels and if its an audio expert that they have coming in to look at it, he'll be able to put a limiter on it so that the huge volume spikes stop happening.

Some DMs will have a card for each player. Fold it in half, hamburger style, Their name on the front, and name and misc stats like AC or HP or passive perception/passive insight on the back

pretty sure it was the greenflame blade cantrip
@@brianbourque5795 Maybe but that's crazy dmg because Greenflame Blade only deals 1d8 at 5th lvl then flames jump to an adjacent enemy for 5 dmg.
@@symphony10 The spell attack also deals the weapon damage so it would also deal 1d4+modifier +1d8. He also critically hit that attack so its double dice
Double damage from the crit would make max 24+modifier, so it is entirely plausible to do 25 damage.

So these dice boxes.... does that mean no more PC's can die due to their dice box plot armor? I hope not, not that I want to see PC's die, but that first episode was fucking badass. I'm not saying literally immortal, I just hope that encounters don't start to get softballed out of fear of killing a PC.

So over the last 2 months I have been watching a lot of Matt's videos. I think I've watched somewhere between 70-80 and Matt talked so warmly about phil and his interactions and how he is a good player but I have watched 4 of the chain eps slowly over the last few weeks and he seems like a very difficult player and person to be around? Is he always like this, is he still pisssed about the first episode? Every other player laughs, gets mad, gets excited but Phil is like an emotional vacuum sucking the wind out of the sails of everyone around him. Am I mistaken?

First episode I was thrown off by the players not using voices to get into character.
Now I am not phased by it and still see that they are roleplaying and Matt is encouraging them by asking “what would Judge do?” Eg
Thats because ( as you know)too many people think Critical Role is end all be all.
D&D doesnt take voice actors to be legit.
This group is the sort of atmosphere i was used to when playing often.
Accents are not roleplaying. You're thinking of voice acting.

I love the omega nails concept, but I feel like most of the players I run with would have just immediately thrown hands with him and gotten killed. Maybe even including myself.
