Yeah, I've found that some wd-40 and a couple hours strait of opening and closing it while watching some TV really breaks it in. Also, I'm obsessed with fidgeting leathermans so it's a win-win for me.
@@BrendanBrown1 try not to use wd-40, it is not meant for lubrication and can actually make it easier to gather gunk in between moving parts. Use something like mineral oil
Literally.. i got a wave + for my birthday and i sat watching tv and just opened and closed it with 1 hand over and over, now only 3 weeks later, i can easily open and close it with 1 hand. Definitely not as smooth as a few year old tool, but just using it is the best way to break it in.
I would recommend a food grade oil. Victorinox uses food grade oil, for good reason. If you use your knife to cut food, in the wilderness or at home(I do it all the time), why have a toxic multitool. I coat a new tool daily, work it in, and put it in a sheath. The sheath will absorb some oil and provide some corrosion resistance. Cleaning the tool with q-tips does work great. Just my 2-cents.
I was literally going to comment this exact same thing. If you buy Victorinox oil during Black Friday, it's only $3.00/bottle w/ free shipping (to the US). I stock up then and use it on all my folding tools and knives, as I never know which I will use for food. And I use a quick bath of Dawn dishwashing liquid and warm water, then IPA 91% for stripping the old oils/lubricants off, then lightly apply Victorinox oil to the joints and surfaces. Works great!
That is exactly what I've been doing when I get a new Leatherman (or other brand of tool with folding parts), but I have an additional step that is usually necessary to make the Leatherman easily one-hand openable. I carefully unscrew the pivot points just a touch at a time and only if I have to after working it as you demonstrated. Nothing rattles and none of the ones so treated has loosened up any further after years of use. The SOGs come that way, but a Leatherman usually needs that little tweak.
When I first got my Leatherman Wave I was astounded by the overall fit and finish of the thing. It is hard to live with when you are used to the Victorinox craftsmanship.
I almost returned my surge due to this same issue.. tools were loose, blade play in all the outward tools.. but man, those pliers were knipex quality.. after I took a step back, and thought about it, I saw what leatherman was going for.. awesome pliers with some ok tools attached.. if was a tough choice to not return as it cost 200 Canadian dollars, and at that price I expected more, but then I thought about the 25 year warranty, and how I will almost certainly need to have it repaired or replaced before it runs out. I think that leatherman is assuming you’ll be getting at least 2 tools over the 25 year period with that warranty, and if you think about it that way, and are tough on your tools, then it’s a solid choice...
I enjoyed this video and makes good sense, my first Leatherman was the super tool and just used it but this was back in 1993. I did just purchase the Leatherman wave for my son who turns 16 in a week. I will review this with him. Thank you for assembling this video.
My wife made me stop breaking in my leatherman wave while having sex. She said it was it or her. I love my leatherman so much that I let her go. Her new guy carries a Gerber Goober Grabber.
You can also do nothing but basic cleaning and oiling. Breaking-in is not necessary--just use the tool. Cleaning depends on your use environment. If very dirty run a compressed air hose over the tool. Tiny drop of lubricant. Most casual users can do fine with minimal maintenance. Many do fine with no real maintenance and have their Waves many years.
Yes. Wave has a kind of brake that slows down the opening making it always feel more or less brand new, which i like. Lubricating may add a bit of certain smoothness maybe, but some extra dirt may stick to the oil compromising the benefit.
The be all end all to any tool pivot tightness is valve lapping compound. Daub it on, work the pivot, hear the grinding, keep working and applying the compound… 5 minutes later work some WD-40 through the pivot until no more grinding sound and done. Works amazing on any tool pivot as it actually lightly removes material inside out. Amazing

I use M-Pro7 Gun Oil LPX on the slide rails, springs and all mechanism moving parts and metal surface of my pistols and AR and everything runs like butter, a little goes a long way and doesn't get sticky or dry out. I also use it on my multi-tools as well and it works wonders, you'll be surprised!...Does excellent job as cleaner, lubricant and protecting against wear and humidity.

i took a dremel to mines but all outside and plier head i left the pivot points alone just been using some silicone oil and working them over and over they have definitely broken in a little more from oiling the pivot points and opening them and closing them .
I love that sound! Good tip. I have a surge and the bit kit, extender in my get home bag but want to get the wave plus for a Vanquest edc huge organizer. Will try your method to help break it in. Seems like you got yours nice and smooth. We know how stiff new ones can be. Subbed.

Oh wow, the pinched fingers breaking in such a great tool! I actually had a product called Marine Guard which was a great lubricant, but now I'll try the Blue! Thanks!
I’d wager there isn’t an owner in the world that hasn’t got a good pinch from their wave lol. I did two things to fix it, took a dremel to the pinch points to debur/chamfer them, plus took some fat aluminum wire and fashioned myself a nice little ring on the thumb hole of the straight blade, it not only rolls over my hands now instead of pinches but it allows me to know where my normal blade is and keep orientation of the tool better, the wave should come with a ring =)
Like many mentioned, just use it. Anyway the tool get all sort of gunk in those tiny cervices. Trying to keep your handy tool in pristine condition is just not possible. Try sawing something with your Wave and there you have it. Cleaning time. Thanks for sharing though.
I very recently received a new Wave+, wiped off the excess black oxide, drenched it with Ballistol, cleaned, cleaned and cleaned some more - but at one point I just couldn't close the pliers - they were stuck open, resisting every effort to close and retreat into the handles. I emailed Leatherman - no response. I questioned YT creators - no response. FINALLY, after many manhandling attempts, one side gave in, so I was 50% on my way. Eventually, the other side folded into the handle. WHY they make the hinges so TIGHT is beyond me! Anyway, I sprayed (again) with silicone lubricant, then WD-40, and kept challenging the hinges to be more respectful. So, the tool wasn't "locked up" as it thought it was (and I was not able to find the unlocking mechanism), it was just those TOO TIGHT hinges. So the tool needs an initially difficult breaking in period. When I initially read Amazon reviews about the Wave +, I noticed that folks were naysaying the nylon pouch, believing that it can only accommodate a 1" wide belt. If they had EXAMINED the pouch, they would have found that if they unsnap it, the loop can be pulled up, making it wider, after which one should close the snap, EZPZ!
Save money, buy a gallon of food grade Mineral Oil, muti-tools, knives, firearms, even cutting boards and wooden scales and stocks, it may be all you ever need for decades. I learned this from a gun smith long ago and it works great. Saves you a lot of money and most of those other products use mineral oil as there primary ingredient. Say bye bye to all the many many snake-oil companies ripping you off by just selling you mineral oil plus coloring agents or negligibly "beneficial" additives. Try soaking the pivot areas with wd40 and then work it in by opening and closing it and in a few mins your good to go. Used it in all of my leathermans even the black oxide and also offers rust protection.
@Gear Nut have you ever tried using a dry GRAPHITE after you clean it the first time? I don't know about multi-tools, but my experience with locks was the dry graphite powder works WAY better than any type of liquid lubricant. Not many people know about this. A little bit, but that’s kinda what you have to expect. It doesn’t need to be soping wet but a nice thin layer will be great but will def have a slight oily feel. Better than to leave it bare.
WD-40 and an air nozzle from the air compressor. Wipe off any excess with a cloth. 30 seconds. Done. I get where you're coming from, but that's a lot of time spent when it's going to get dirty again the next time you use it.
on the Leatherman site they tell you to NOT use WD-40, it can corrode the washers they use. Check out Rust and Corrosion on this link www.leatherman.com/CustomerService-Maintenance.html
@@Tahoe2002Md Not sure when you read the maintenance suggestion for your Leatherman from their own website. It clearly says TO use WD40 or similar products such as liquid wrench to clean and lubricate your Leatherman and prevent corrosion.
In all seriousness, I loosen all of the pivot screws so it flops around, use WD-40 spray to clean it out, bow it out with a compressor then I use SlipStream gun lube to lubricate it. It's an oil that gets slicker the hotter it gets. I then watch a youtube video for five to ten minutes while opening and closing it then tighten it back down again wiping any excess lube off. I've had great success with that technique.

WD-40 isn't that great a lubricant. It won't do any harm and it works great if your tool is wet, as it's a water displacement fluid (hence the name). I've been using 3-in-1 oil on my knives and tools for at least 40 years without a single problem. Just wipe off the excess with whatever clean cloth you have handy..
My straight edge knife is still significantly harsher to open web after years of (sporadic) use.. On closer inspector I just now realized that something (scales or blade) seems to be bent so that they actually are pressing against each other causing friction! Had it since 2013 so Leatherman should warranty this, right?

Got a micra for me and my lil brother and gave one to him as an early Christmas present, the whole time I thought the micras just had super stiff scissors and then all of a sudden my brothers using his like a damn pro while my scissors take the might of Zeus to use, just a lil bit of blue lube and boom. What the hell, had my micra acting like crap for a few days before I gave my brother his for no good reason
My Victorinox didn't need to be broken in, took it out of the box and started using it, hasn't needed maintenance or sharpening for the past year of multiple uses every single day.
mine came absolutely covered in oil - I should remove it all and start again?
...OR.......just get the Coyote Tan model with black finish blades.
Ain't gotta be pretty.......just has to work well. Good vid, bro.
Awesome vid.
I’ve been looking for ideas to make a leather or Kydex holster for the Leatherman surge with its 2 bit sets and bit extender. One holster. I see many have made two separate holsters for each and wear them both. I would want an all-in-one if it’s not too big. Can it be done!?
I’m sure it can be done. There’s a guy who makes custom holsters and sheaths. I haven’t had him make anything for me yet but I’m planning to have him make me a holster and a sheath for my EDC. It should probably go without saying that it won’t be inexpensive.
This isn’t the guy but this is the guy who knows the guy.

Break free clp will do the job smoothing things out all gunk from manufacturing will work its way out
What lubricant would you recommend for use for someone in the uk?
I need information on my Leatherman Wave
wd40 soak for days doesn't help?
I just use it. I use mine so often they break in within a couple days
Using it regularly could be the solution I guess
Are you stamp paper and Polished the outside
I break them in by simply just using my Surge every chance I get, that way, it works just how I want it to!!
Break in? Mine was dead smooth straight out of the box
mine was really hard to open and close, and forget about using the pliers with one hand - impossible
Congratulations you’re the exception.
my problem is not the the part you lubed, it is with the pliers opening. I'd like to be able to hold one handle and the other handle can swing freely. PLEASE HELP
You’ll have to loosen it.
Can I use WD 40 Bike to clean my Leatherman?
Could you use reel oil.. I've used it on knives for awhile never had any problems.
I've never used it, but a lot lot of people think it works as well as dedicated knife oil at a fraction of the cost.
That’s what she said!!
Ballistol cleans and lubes .
do you have any experience with using nano oil?
When I try to open the blade it opens the file does any1 know why?
Used WD-40, worked great. only had to do it once, open and close all the tools, to this day smooth.
cleaning and lubing where you did ruins the opening of the plyer. You need friction in the handles to open the plyer
How to break in a leatherman, Put half a drop of motor oil in the moving parts.
I have used blue lube on my LM and it only colekts dust and gungk it up
best for me is WD40 rust protection and lubs everything works perfekt
Neat
Does it make the leatherman oily or greasy if you lubricate that
Not if you wipe the excess off with a swab or any clean cloth you have handy.
The UK website says you can use WD-40 !!! Is the WD-40 different in the US to the U.K.?
www.leatherman.co.uk/maintenance.html
@@philipjackson2135 Maybe the UK website manufactures there's in the UK, so moght use a different washer than the US location?
@@Tahoe2002Md Not sure when you read the maintenance suggestion for your Leatherman from their own website. It clearly says TO use WD40 or similar products such as liquid wrench to clean and lubricate your Leatherman and prevent corrosion.
"And while I was cleaning my tool", uh huh, we've all been there.
Erik Torell Oh- THAT old line
WD40 was my go to
3 in 1 makes me cringe. I've had 2 bottles of it eat through their own bottle in the space of 2 years or so. Why do they put it in bottles that fail?
You got to be jocking if you search for this topic. Just use the d... thing.
Awesome video . Loved it . Just got a leatherman wave plus .
Also I like what you did with your channel you have my subscription would love to have your support as well . Thanks again
ATB Joe😎👊🏻
I broke it in after 2 days of use :D
lmao! How to break in a new Leatherman using a q-tip dipped in really expensive food grade mineral oil.
Seems like you did a deep cleaning when you replaced the pliers head.
What about WD-40? would that work?
