  • In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a walk between Lambert's Castle Hill & Coney's Castle - situated close to the Dorset / Devon border. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
Before I started my walk, I had a quick look at a couple of buildings at the village of Marshwood (less than half a mile from my “start point”) to visit St Mary's church and the Bottle Inn. The pub, which was closed but due to reopen later in the year, was until recently the home of the World Nettle eating Championships!
I park my car at the National Trust car park on the Northern side of Lambert's Castle Hill and have an exploration around the top of the hill. It was once an Iron Age Hill fort and was also the venue of a livestock fair & horse racing - both of which ceased in the 1950's.
My 4 mile circular walk continues, heading South on the Eastern side of the hill where I get to enjoy some amazing views of the Marshwood Vale.
Coming off the hill, I initially take a small detour to the West to check out the tiny Church of St John at Fishpond Bottom.
I retrace my steps back to Peter's Gore & continue South to Coney's Castle - another hill which also had an Iron Age Hill fort.
I finish my walk by heading back North, uphill, to the car park.

Amazing scenery out that way. Glad that Logan got his game of ball, and a sit on top of the trig point! I look forward to those regular features! As always great background music which I know well enough to hum along to now. Your videos wouldn't be the same without it!

Hello Dave, another pleasant moment in your company.Thank you. Logan will never catch a cold with all that Vitamin C from the Blackberries he loves.
There is a pub in deep down Kent called the Bottle House which we frequented when we were young married. I see it's still thriving. That's a bit way off your neck of the woods though.

Thank you Martin. Yes, Logan is going to miss those "blackberry stops" over the winter!

Your usual well-researched walk Dave, with magnificent views on another stunning Dorset day! Glad to hear the Bottle's been bought and is staying a pub, many a pint enjoyed after a hot summer's walk, never quite fancied the nettles though.

You must have been in your element with not one but two hill forts to explore! And Logan definitely prefers blackberries to nettle leaves for his munchies!! Thanks for another really interesting video - I think I came across Wootton Fitzpaine village mentioned on signpost when I fell off Wessex Ridgeway onto Monarch's Way on a walk to north of Lyme when on holiday there.

It is great to have four iron age hill forts so close to each other (Pilsdon Pen & Lewesdon Hill are not that far away from Lambert's Castle & Coney's Castle). Certainly keeps me fit with all that climbing!.

Just wonderful Dave! I've watched the last couple of nettle eating contests from the cider farm a while back. It looked pretty gruesome! Must be a case of 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen Out in the Midday Sun' 🤪😂
