You missed the best donair shop in the city. If green onions are quintessential, then donairs are essential. I’m going to have to try that donut shop and great list. I miss the Red Ox as well but Rge Rd offers some great seasonal dishes. I also like to go to Ernest’s at NAIT

I don't drink coffee but Remedy is my favourite for tea. Their chai is the best I've had, and that includes many cities. Also fantastic that they have a good selection of food for those who can't tolerate gluten and/or dairy. Even their selection of non chai teas is amazing. Happy to see a local business not only thriving but expanding, and still maintaining quality.

No disrespect to Moth at ALL, but Padmanadi is ALWAYS going to be my #1 choice for best vegan in YEG. It’s an absolute staple for this city and it defies the borders of “vegan vs meat eater” because I’ve never met a person of any diet who didn’t love their food. Plus they’re just extremely community minded, kind people!

    1. Long live NorthSide!!
    2. Excellent Troll sifter ending :)
    3. Thanks for your work here shouting out to some of Edmonton's underrated spots but especially the efforts you put into the comments section: Kudos! Not all content creators care.
    4. Plant-based meals, days, periods definitely have their place- Can I ask why you slowed down?
    5. E-town doesn't have a scene like Van, TO, or especially Montreal but we do have an abundance. Going within or even beyond your list, what would you consider your Edmonton High and Low culinary experiences??
    6. My favourite Edmonton restaurant? Thanks for asking: It has to be *Brad Lazarenko's @CulinaFamily*. Why? They tick every box you can imagine and more. Supports/cooks with local veggies from local farms? - Check. Supports/cooks with local meat producers? - Check. Supports local vendors of CHOCOLATE, coffee, jams, spreads, CHORIZO sausages, GELATOS, sauces and on and on! Check. Supports his staff? Check. Supports Indigenous? Check (Brad is Meti). Supports Dietary Challenges? Check. (I counted 15 GF and 4 Vegan options in the to-go freezer and he's always got meals AND desserts for them too in the to-go fridges). Supports healthy options? Check. He supports the Italian center? Check out his new spot at Culina McCauley almost kitty corner to the 95th Street Spinellli Crown Jewel...
But best of all, and what we value most in our Favourite restaurant - every time we go to Culina, Brad and/or his staff greet me and my wifey by name, they're happy to chat and share, they've probably taken a risk on their menu so that they can learn something and we can try something different, and they just make you feel like part of the Culina family. It's not just about the food, it's about the genuine care and connection they offer, creating an enriching experience that goes beyond the plate and contributes to the warmth and prosperity of Edmonton's really unique and interesting culinary landscape - all in one place.

Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to leave detailed comments and engage with my video!
I appreciate you noticing the effort I put into (most) replies to comments, that's something I'm trying to emphasize on my channel. Annoys me when content creators are dismissive of people who actually take the time to watch and engage with their videos.
I'm glad you got a kick out of the McDonald's addition at the end, I was shocked at how upset some people got over that LOL.
I'm very biased to the north side of Edmonton, it does has more gritty areas (which isn't always a bad thing) but it was way more services, attractions, amenities and restaurants as well.
I went back to being an omnivore because I was just constantly craving meat honestly - but I definitely think I wasn't getting enough complete protein, but I've been learning more about BCAAs and how they can be an effective protein supplement to a plant based diet. I actually have many complex thoughts on this issue and I could talk for hours about it.
I think Culina is a great organization as well, years ago I delivered food for Italian Centre and I often dropped off at their locations. I actually had no idea Culina had a new spot in little Italy, that area is one of my favorite in the city. Been meaning to pop into Zocalo to see how they recovered from that fire.
      Cheers mate!

So, 4 months after watching your show, we attended the Bul Go Gi House for dinner - and ordered what you order - and it was Sooo Gooood!!!!
The restaurant had an air of a 90’s Chinese Restaurant. We had a great conversation with the older couple at the table over, who had been going there since ‘78, and told us how the restaurant used to be configured where you had a personal oven of sorts to bbq, and you didn’t wear your good clothes because you would smell like bbq when done.
We got word Trump had been shot while eating! (Not commenting politically, just relating the situation).
Thank you for sending us on this adventure.

Great video. Im gunna have to visit the Commodore, always noticed it on Jasper but never been! Same with the Moth actually too. You clearly know downtown places super well, these are 3 Strathcona area places I love! Tacos on Whyte, super fresh ingredients, tiny lil place just south of Whyte ave on Calgary trail, good value too. La Bosco Cafe and Bakery, 79th ave and Calgary trail, really great trendy type cafe in an industrial type building with a huge raised concrete garden bed filled with lil trees and bushes, really cool. I always get the bulgagi poutine and a caramel frap when I go. Friends & Neighbours and Pho Delight is 2 places in one, but you can get either menu on both sides, they share the same kitchen and staff. Friends and Neighbours is a classic diner, Pho Delight is Vietnamese with a huge selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Once again the ingredients are always fresh and the service is very friendly, 108 street and Whyte ave, its a stable of the area, been around since the 80s I think

I've been living in Edmonton for a long time, and I've been looking for a pizza place that makes authentic New York style pizza, and most of the joints around me fail to deliver solid pizza (Cosmic Pizza, Bingo Pizza, and all the chains). After watching this video, I gave Tony's a try and man it's really great! This place is exactly what I've been looking for! So thank you so much Strange North! Yeah to me that place has the best pizza in the city, great food and overall vibe. I like their steak and pasta too. Edmonton has a surprisingly excellent Italian/pizza scene and I think that's largely due to the Italian Centre Shop.

118 Avenue is home of some of the best ethnic restaurants in Edmonton - West African, East African, South American, Indian, South East Asian, European, you name it. Step into any of these joints and you'll get a belly full of delicious food for less than 30 bucks. Parking is not an issue compared to downtown or Whyte ave. either. Good call on Take 5 too. It's a rare old school indy donut shop the likes of which we haven't seen in decades because of the Tim Horton monopoly. 118 Ave is a wonderful part of town that is often overlooked but is well worth discovering.

Commodore is my favourite place for breakfast, just a good solid diner style bacon and eggs at a good price. Love the history of the place too.
For a good breakfast and good value in the north east check out The Whistling Kettle on 50th St.
Take 5 is also top notch I live in the area and it’s not as bad as the hype.
It’s sad that Route 99 isn’t open 24 hours anymore.
Tony’s Pizza Palace is legit NY style the original owner is from NYC. The NY style pepperoni pizza is 👌better than most in NYC

Hathaway's is a little "Mom & Pop" joint in a strip mall just west of 127 St. Well, actually, a "Mom & Daughter" joint, if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, it's small and very unpretentious but it's got about the best breakfast around; or at least it did. Like I say, it's been some time since I was there. May have changed since. The crowds are always a good indication, though. Don't even bother trying to go there on Saturday morning or you'll be eating off your knee on the front stoop.@@strangenorth

I tried Flat Boy burgers….awesome smashburgers. Get the double, they are very thin. 2 patties, grilled till crispy on the ends, and authentic
home cut thick french fries, and reasonably priced.
They are inside the Granite Curling Club in Old Strathcona.
I am telling you, best burger in the city right now. They are not open until noon. They have some seating indoors, but no waiters, order, then seat yourself, then pick up your food.

My picks for my favorite Edmonton restaurants:
    1. The Three Amigos on 106st, southside. Great Mexican food, good atmosphere, and decent parking.
    2. The Captain's Boil. Specifically, the northside location, on 137th ave. Great seafood, but is on the pricey side. Abundant parking and easy to drive to. The southside location is just as good, as far as food goes, but is busier, and is in one of those annoying new style commercial parks with strange, unaligned streets that are really hard to get out of.
    3. IHOP. Specifically, the original southside location, between Calgary Trail and Gateway, south of Whitemud Drive. Consistently good food and service. Abundant parking and easy to get, except during rush hour. The main reason, the southside location gets my pick is their hours during the pandemic madness. All the other restaurants in Edmonton would close at 8, except drive through places. IHOP southside stayed open until 1 am.
    4. The Kitchen at the River Cree Resort and Casino. Specifically on Friday-Sunday evenings, for the buffet. Easily the best buffet in Edmonton. Lots of parking, but the casino is popular, so you might be a ways out in the parking lot. As an added bonus, for those of us who smoke, you can go to the Onyx bar afterward for a cigarette and cocktail, without standing in the cold.
    5. Saratoga Restaurant on the southside, near Hwy 2 and 23 ave. Great traditional Canadian diner/family restaurant for breakfast or lunch. Easy to get to and adequate parking, but they are always busy. From distant memory of my childhood, I think they were open later, in the 80s and 90s.
Previously, I would have highly recommended Soda Jerks, on the west side, but they seem to have went out of business, in two different locations. I have yet to find a good, burger place in Edmonton to replace it, that is easy to drive to, and has abundant parking.
Now, if you wanted a list for Grande Prairie, I could include a lot more, and almost every place there as good parking.

      @@strangenorth Sure. Grande Prairie recommendations:
Best burgers: Either Major's Family Restaurant on 100th street, north side, or Major's Homestyle in the Paradise Inn on 100th ave, west side. Long time GP residents will probably have fond memories of the original Majors, at the Prairie Haven Inn, across from the Prairie Mall. It was a staple of GP for decades. It was most known for homemade burgers on homemade buns, with homemade fries, as well as several Ukrainian dishes. After the original owners retired and sold the restaurant to Asians, someone connected to the original restaurant opened Major's Homestyle, commonly known as Major's 2. The Asian run restaurant continued in the original location, for years, but has since moved to the old Pizza Hut building. Both still feature the original burgers, as well as many other menu items from the original establishment, but also have unique menu items. Both are great, but I would give Major's Homestyle a slight edge. Both have plenty of parking.
Best fancy coffee. Old smokes on 100th ave, east side. Features a full line of fancy coffees, except cappuccino, for some reason. Also several varieties of regular coffee available in a normal roast or smoked. For food, they have sandwiches and deserts. I like the elk panini. Parking can be a bit tricky in peak hours, but you can, almost, always find a spot.
Best Mexican: El Norteno at the Grande Prairie Farmer's Market, downtown. Not a full restaurant, but, rather, a permanent booth in the GP Farmer's Market. Open 7 days a week, even when the farmer's market is not running. Very good, if limited menu of Mexican dishes. Ample parking when farmer's market is not in session, but can be a pain, when it is.
Best buffet: Soleilki, west side. Mostly Asian food, buffet. Standard Chinese food options, plus sushi and a few western options. I noticed that it doesn't have very good reviews on Yelp, but I have always had a great experience. Far superior to the other Asian buffet in town. The brunch buffet at Major's Homestyle is also great, but is only available on weekends.
Best bar/pub: Shark Club, 99th ave, downtown. Good pub food, plus other menu items. Great service. Adequate parking. My go to dish is the jambalaya, but I am a sucker for Cajun dishes. Close runners up would be Original Joe's on the southside, or Brown's Social House on the west side.
Best Asian food. Tentatively, Wally's Kitchen, on 100th st, a few block south of downtown. A GP staple for decades. Great, old fashioned, Canadian Chinese food. The only reason I am saying tentatively is because I haven't been there in over 10 years. When I want Asian food, I always seem to end up at the buffet. Now that I have thought about it, I will have to go there, again, and see if it lives up to memory.
Best steakhouse: Frontier Eatery and Seafood, 100th Ave, west side. Great steak, but I have yet to try the seafood. Ample parking, but access, from the main streets is a bit of a pain, if you don't know the area.
Honorable mention: The lounge at The Great Northern Casino. I wasn't sure what category to list this under. Great steak. great entree's and great service. Lots of parking, but the casino is always busy, so plan to be a ways from the door.
Best breakfast: Humpty's. I assume most Canadians know Humpty's It is consistent and has great food, especially breakfast options. Two locations in GP. One on the west side, near Canadian Tire, and one 100th st, northside, at the Petro Canada. The northside location is better for service and parking.

    • @keithvincenttucker9923
      @keithvincenttucker9923 Před 5 měsíci

@@strangenorth One place i forgot to mention in my Grande Prairie list.
Best Desert: Crooked Creek Donuts at Crooked Creek General store. While not in GP, still worth a visit. Crooked Creek General Store is about 60 km east of GP or 40 Km west of Valleyview. The donuts are so popular, they often have a hard time keeping up with demand. Thus, it is not uncommon, for them to fill your order with still warm donuts from the back. Probably the least healthy thing you will eat all week, the regular glazed donuts, if cooled, taste utterly amazing. If you get them while still warm, they taste like angel orgasms.

Edmonton used to have great dim sum restaurants in the 90's and early 2000's. Rumor had it that there were a group of Hong Kong trained dim sum chefs who would prepare the meals and rotate between 4 restaurants. If I were to guess, three of them were Noodle Noodle, Marco Polo, and Jumbo Seafood. They all tasted the same: excellent.
Those days are gone, but the one standout left is a place called Wok House in St. Albert next to the funeral home. No one really knows about them because they mostly do take out, but their dim sum is as fantastic as the good old days.

The Folk Festival, the Fringe, the Edmonton comic expo, Taste of Edmonton, and the Heritage Festival (the best foodie and shopping festival in the city, IMHO) are the biggies, but there are countless smaller events too, even into the fall and winter. Best farmers markets would be cool too! Bro how do you do an Edmonton food video and not mention any Donair spots! I'd argue Edmonton is more known for donair then green onion cakes lol.

Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback - you know what honestly I'm pretty inexperienced with donairs. No reason really, just never had too many. I had one once awhile ago and I disliked the sauce but I loved the meat - and I've had the meat on other occasions and it was great. I know Edmonton is also pretty well known for it's donairs too, what is the best place in Edmonton in your opinion? Cheers

@@strangenorth enjoyed the video and have been checking out the channel, good stuff. I recommend Swiss Donair, Eddies Donair, UFO Pizza, or Simply Donair can't go wrong at any of those spots. If you don't like sweet sauce eddies specifically has really good garlic and tzatziki sauce as an alternative.

thanks man I appreciate it - and thanks for the recommendations too, I actually tried UFO Pizza for the first time in Saint Paul last summer. Kept the box because I'm a UFO nerd, love that place and Saint Paul is a neat spot to check out if you've never been. Cheers!@@naderzein2435

For pizza my all time favourite is Capital Pizza & Steakhouse on 144th Ava & about 77th street. Been eating there since 87’. Where’s Tony’s? I didn’t catch it. 🎉

Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to leave feedback - good to know about Capital, haven't been there but interested in checking out new pizza places down the road. Tony's is on 111 ave and about 96 street, just north of Little Italy. Cheers mate, have a great week!

Do you leave the downtown/central to eat? These might be great for that area...but sooo many more outside that boundary.

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  Před 2 měsíci

Yeah that's a fair point, I'm definitely biased towards the central core in a lot of ways. These are just my current favorite picks but you're right, lots of options outside of the core. I was thinking of doing a part 2 video down the road. Thanks for watching!

Try Backstairs Burger,109A Ave and 119 st. First burger in decades that actually tasted like beef. Fries are great too, pizza, meh. Only had one style, maybe the others are better. The burgers though! Better than Woodshed, cheaper too!
