  • Chill and watch as I build and then fly a HeeWing F-01 high speed wing!
    This video took over a month to create, so if you enjoyed it please give it a like :)
    I technically built this wing for free. I used CZcams revenue to buy the wing itself, and then kitted it out with spare electronics I had lying around. I also used a BETAFPV ELRS kit that they kindly sent me for free. You can get the kit from here:
    Module: betafpv.com/collections/expre...
    Receiver: betafpv.com/collections/expre...

    10:10 1st flight
    11:33 2nd flight

      This a cool and way more than a toy if used for surveillance of one’s property.
      Tell me what kind of range are you getting? …and for a recon mission? …how about in areas with partially heavy forestation?…any options with thermal cameras and or starlight cams?
      I would like to invest in a First person perspective drone for both the fun of flying as well as as sweep of my property. It is mostly flat land (45 miles west of the Chicago limits… with a large clear space that is about one mile by 3 miles roughly oval and a few more heavily forested. I would also really like to fly a pattern manually and be able to send it off to repeat that recon sweep autonomously.
      What do you suggest?

    • @gizfpv
      @gizfpv  Před 2 lety +1

      @@robertwalsh5461 You could do all that with this wing, although there's definitely better options. A mini Skyhunter would be my suggestion. You can get very long flight times with that (over and hour with the right batteries), and it would easily be able to carry things such as a thermal camera. As for your last question, any drone that's equipped with a GPS unit and a flight controller running INAV firmware would be able to do autonomous flights/fly a pre-determined pattern.

    Love how the GPS drops nicely into the FC mount at 4:55. 😉 Assume you did one massive raid on the spares box, then came up with a strategy. Always learn a few tidbits from watching your well edited content. The use of 3d-printed camera mount (5:18) that glues in vs. gluing in the camera is really thinking outside the spares box. Makes for easy recovery, or swap-out in future. ♥😎
    Regarding the speed and weight (12:31), generally heavier planes will achieve better performance at higher speeds. I'd suggest checking propeller speed (RPM vs. pitch). Beside propeller, you might check speed claim to see what battery was used. A higher voltage would provide more power (provided ESC and electronics support).
    A coat of turtle wax (🐢) could make it a be more slick (just kidding). BTW: one thing I noticed is the 3d-prints for VTx and Rx appears to have a lip, which could act like a spoiler; particularly as close to leading edge of wing. If had be placed further back, they'd be behind laminar separation point and have less effect (but would be in area where foam not as thinks. Tradeoffs)
    One extra you could try is printing servo covers that add an aero shroud to cover elevon pushrods and horn). Know would not be stock, but it might enable getting the most Hee out of that Wing. Alternatively trying high speed passes inverted might have an alternate limiting speed. (never know, that fine print in claims, etc).

    • @gizfpv
      @gizfpv  Před 2 lety +3

      Owning a 3d printer is invaluable when it comes to building aircraft. I pretty much always design and print parts for each build I do, as it just makes them much cleaner builds :) On that note though, you may be right about the VTX and RX mounts having a slight lip that may have interrupted the airflow and induced drag. Although as someone else commented, the VTX antenna probably produced the most drag. Ideally a embedded antenna should be used I reckon. Servo covers might not be a bad idea though. As for trying high speed passes inverted.....that sounds like a recipe for foam snow and tears 😂

  • @bob2161
    @bob2161 Před 2 měsíci

    I think to get that last bit of speed you're going to have to really clean it up. Get rid of all of the external antennas and whatever those slotted panels are that you dug into the wing roots. Where they are, and with those slots and holes, I'm sure they are producing lots of drag, and lots of turbulated airflow. And that turbulence is being stirred up in front of the prop. Feeding a high speed prop lumpy air doesn't do it any favors. Of course, the prop already lives in the turbulence of that boxy center section, so there's that. Even the servo installation could stand to be cleaned up. Those stick-on servo covers seem aerodynamically suspect. Then the servo arm, linkage, and control horn are all hanging out, churning up the air. A simple set of fairings would do a lot to smooth out that churn. Even better would be to get them off of the top of the wing altogether. Remember, air is accelerated as it passes over the top of an airfoil. So you've got all that servo cover and linkage stuff sticking out in the same place that the air is speeding up. And because drag is roughly proportional to the square of speed. Basically, as far as trying to minimize drag, that servo installation couldn't be any worse.
    I would bet that in order to truthfully make that speed claim, the company would have specifically prepared the model to make it as aerodynamically clean as possible.
    They probably also removed all the FPV bits and pieces, and anything that doesn't directly contribute to speed. All things being equal, a lighter plane is a faster plane.
    The practice is pretty common place. Full scale aircraft companies have been doing it for as long as there have been aircraft companies.

    I've been building & flying quad for years, but now its time to head over to the dark side and build some FPV wings. HeeWing is my first build.
    Never built with foam before, and have lots of questions about glue selection [hot or thick CA], laminate or not, etc. Is there a good source for basic stuff like this?

    • @gizfpv
      @gizfpv  Před rokem

      Yes, my channel 😂 But there's several other good channels out there. Off the top of my head there's Andrew Newton, Arxanglerc, adamgdoesfpv, bonefidepirate, rcmodelreviews, flitetest and painless360. You'll also find there's various good Facebook groups worth looking at, such as the inav fixed wing group, long range hooligans and the HeeWing official fpv community.
      As for your specific questions, in my opinion the best glue to use is Uhu Por as it's strong and flexible (and cheap) although hotglue and CA also work (however CA will melt some kinds of foam). And as for laminate that's really down to personal preference. It does add a bit of strength to a aircraft and does look nicer, however if you're a careful pilot and not likely to crash often it's probably not something you'll want to waste time doing

    I would like to build a high speed autonomous FPV drone that can travel over 100 miles at the speed shown
    in this video with additional payload using Pixhawk or nav flight controller

    We could probably squeeze another 20kph out of it if the antennas were kept internal, or if an aerodynamic nose cone was put in front of the blunt camera position.
    200kph is nothing to scoff at with something that draggy :) Very nice build!

    • @gizfpv
      @gizfpv  Před 2 lety

      The blunt nose is a very odd design decision for a high speed wing. I agree something more pointy and aerodynamic would make more sense. And yeah also agree about the antenna. I was still happy with 200kph though :)

    • @DmitriyLaktyushkin
      @DmitriyLaktyushkin Před 2 lety

      @@gizfpv 220 kph isn't that fast though, blunt makes sense. Look at actual plane nose shapes, most of those fly faster and still have pretty blunt noses. Don't need much curvature until you approach supersonic speeds.

    @Giz FPV Thanks for the tutorial. What would you recommend for a flying wing for novices?

    • @gizfpv
      @gizfpv  Před 2 lety +1

      If you're a complete novice, get a Zohd Dart PNP kit. It's a nice small low power wing that requires minimal assembly. If you have a little building experience however go for a S800. Bit of a bigger wing, and requires some assembly, but its almost indestructible so very forgiving if you're likely to crash a lot :)

    I'm super new and was wondering what a good resource is for determining which parts to use and how to program them. Are kit fixed wing drones like this decent for long distance flights that might take a longer time? And can they be programmed to be semi-autonomous (using the gps, etc)?

    • @gizfpv
      @gizfpv  Před 2 lety

      As a general rule of thumb, fixed wing drones can fly much longer and further than multirotor drones. And any fixed wing drone running Inav firmware can be programmed to fly autonomous way point missions. As for parts, the easiest way to know what is good is to check out what other people are using. But in general for fixed wing you'll want a Matek flight controller and a TBS receiver and video transmitter. For camera either Runcam or Caddx are good brands, and for antennas TrueRC is decent.

    cool to see the build process,
    wouldn't be better to use slimmer cables on the xt60? the motor takes all that energy and has much thinner cables, seems you could use thinner cables on the battery too.
