Please be cautious while doing acrylic pouring. Perform in a well ventilated area, wear a respirator, have a fire extinguisher next to you and just have fun!!
Wow! Thank you so much! I didn't know my base could be so much thinner. This explains so much. I can't be the only one who didn't know this important information. Thanks again!
Linda Johnston I didn't either so you're not alone
@@bridgettescreations1733 yep me either till a couple days ago I heard it talked about on another video but it didn't give the "recipe" I've just been using my regular white mix for my base so hopefully this will solve a few issues I've been having. Fingers crossed. !!! Lol. Good luck ladies 😁😁😁😁
@@bridgettescreations1733 Do you leave the base coat wet when you start pouring your design? or let it dry? I am so new at all of this..
@@doloresdrury8018 Pour while it's still wet.
Yes....I purchased decoart premixed pouring paints and my base coat was always a mess
This is some great information. Especially when you want a smooth solid surface for negative space. Too often do you find lumpy textured base paint from it drying thicker. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us.
And Christina is an excellent teacher! She even sounds like one!
it comes from owning businesses and training.....and from having kids......lol
OMGH! Thank you for showing this. I have been throwing away piece after piece not realizing my paint was way too thick! I really appreciate this video!
I use my Milwaukee multi tool and sand it down
I’m about to attempt a ‘reverse swipe’ and came here to learn about your paint’s consistencies. Thank you for answering so many of the comments; reading your replies certainly helped answer any lingering questions (and kudos for the patience to answer the same questions you get over and over/answer in the video!)
Thanks for this, I also didn’t know my base coat should be thinner! I did a wave today and now I realise that my paint was way too thick and I struggled to get the wave to form. I am a Scrooge with the Ewatrol that I have to use - because of the cost, it’s actually more expensive than the paint! 👍 ❤️ 🇬🇧
Thanks so much for this video. Now I know the "magic formula" for the base paint!!! You are the best :)
Oh my gosh. Boy have I been doing it wrong and that explains so much. Thank you so so much.
thank you for the basic mix . you are the first one that i could find. i am a beginner😉
Welcome!
Yes! Thank you...very new here, I really needed this!
You are fabulous! I am now so anxious to go back to my studio and finally mix my paint the correct way.
Omgggg....Where have you been...Wish I had came across your video earlier for I too have tossed one canvas too many in the trash due to my base being not the right consistency....I've seen a few other videos, but my goodness...I thought I was taking a calculus class when all I wanted was a simple non complex measurements 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for sharing 🎨🎨
Thanks for watching!
Yes thank you so much. I was struggling with artists loft white earlier today.
Me too. I didn't know how to get my base coat right. And I use artist loft white as well
ME 3
Thanks so much for doing this!!!
Thank you, Christina! Big Hugs ~Cheryl
Yep have been doing so wrong😁 Thankyou so much for this helpful information!
I never knew there was a difference I usually mix all my paints 1 cup paint 2 cups floetrol I don't add water cause I'm afraid to get cracking and when I put a base coat on I just use my regular mixed paint thanks for this and omg I'm so in love with video 174 I believe it is TFS
Knew base coat should be thinner but when used (what I now feel was to much water) it broke up the acrylic’s ability to bind & just cracked? Great tip about it sliding off a tile as use a consistency chart & count 7 seconds to see how thick or thin paint is as when just eyeball it was so off but it looked like “warm honey”! Ty!!
Great tips, what’s your ratio about 1-1 paint and floetrol then water.
1 paint, 2 floetrol then water
Should the base coat be thinner than the pour paint which is placed on top of the base or should the base and the pour paint be of the same consistency--that part of dutch pour is very confusing to me.
on a dutch pour, they should all be the same consistency so they flow together. I only use paint, water, liquitex pouring medium and gac800 in my dutch pours now.
So all the paints in a Dutch are the same? For some reason mine don't drip thin enough.. I follow Kanella Ciracos recipe for Dutch pour paints. I was thinking my base needed to be thinner.
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing this, Christina.
Yes, this one very important step is often left out on tutorials. Another way to get your paints to move around easier is to prime the canvas with Gesso, that made a huge difference for me because it doesn't allow the canvas to be porous & waste ur paints...
Thanks for sharing!
Lol but at the same time, I now see all these people writing "wow, I didnt know the basecoat needed to be thinner"...this may sound very amateur, lol, but what is the basecoat color compared to the rest if the colors ur using? Is it that it's just the color you want the canvas to be? You make it look so easy! Also pillow paint I suppose is thicker....? Idk I've created nice ones & dreadful ones...lol
Maybe I missed it but You dodn't say how much Floetrol you eventually added....????
1 part paint, 2 part floetrol. So if you use 1 ounce of paint you'd use 2 ounces of floetrol
@@ChristinaWelch Thank you Christina...much appreciated
Thank you for showing how to do this
Wish I could use that code here in the UK!
Thanks for this demo, so useful!
I did my 2nd pour today. My painting has no rhyme or reason, it looks like a child did it. My cells are very few. But with time I hope to improve. Thank you for this base mix video!!!
Thank you Christina
Thanks this helped me understand how to mix the paint.
So I understand why you do a base coat for this technique on a flat canvas...but if I wanted to do a pour over a 3D object like vase or gourd, do you think I’d need a base?
No, not needed. Just clean really well with alcohol before you pour.
I didn’t realise that base paint didn’t have glue in it! I know now - thanks Christina 😀
I’m confused! HELP! I watched a guy mix his own pouring medium with PVA glue, water and a drop of glycerin for the cells. So is his mixture no good for adding to the base paint to get the correct consistency? Please can anyone answer this? Floetrol or Flood really is very expensive here in UK. Thank you!! 🙏🙏🙏🥴
I have the same question u have, I pretty much know all there is to know but the "basecoat" needs to be satin & thinner. Then the puddle paints (the paints u blow or swipe are the ones mixed with medium. As for the house paint, yeah, I asked Home Depot for Behr 8300, it's the new One to use, they gave me Behr interior/exterior titanium ultra white glass gloss & I have no idea what I can use that for. I asked & never get answers, so confusing
Thank you
So informative--thank you so much!
Is that base you're using an acrylic? I'm confused as to what Shirley is calling craft paint in the other comment.
Can you use craft paint to create your base coats?
I wouldn’t, it may crack
Hi there. Is the Payne s gray a house paint? I’m trying to get a black base coat using my sateen house paint. I added black acrylic paint to it and I can only get to gray. I hope this isn’t a stupid question 😂❤
Thank you!!!
All the bloom and bloom swipes I have seen just use White House paint off the shelve and they don’t mix it with anything. They said u need a thicker pillow? When I used my primary elements mixed with the poly pour I noticed when I blew out bloom the colors wanted to come back in and fold back up instead of spreading ? Any help and is your bloom base the same
check out video 500 for all the bloom info. Also i did a month of blooming in tutorials. You can find those videos in my Tutorial Thursday playlist.
What do you use enamel house paint for.
Hi I've never put flotrol in base.. I have a problem with my base coat coming thru the painting ..will this stop with flotrol?.thank you 🦋
if you're using Artist Loft Flow, nothing stops it. I quit using it because of those white cells along the edges. I now use Creative Inspirations.
Thank You again !
Christina, is this the same formula you use for latex house paint as a base?
House paint is usually 50/50 and just alittle water. It depends on the house paint's consistency before starting to mix.
Thank you for your tutorial I found it most useful but may I ask a question ..can I make the base coat in any colour and can I make enough to keep for future pours what I mean is does it keep
Yes, I make my base coats once a month, but I have some from months ago that I still use.
Hi Christina, great video! which one of the resins do you use. I went to your link but there’s several options.
I use Stone Coat Epoxy. Art Coat for White based pieces. Countertop Epoxy for coasters and other functional art.
Thank you, such basic info is hard to find these days lol.
Doesn’t water cause cracking? I stopped using water bc of this but I’m having a lot of trouble getting a smooth base coat that doesn’t look cratered
if you're using a quality paint with the floetrol and water, your finish should be smooth. Your paint may still be too thick causing the texture and craters.
Tencha's Art - If I want to avoid cracking, can I add a bit of GAC 800 to the mix?
yes you can. Just give your mix a heavy squirt of it.
Watched .
Thank you so much, I was really confused about the glue thing. Have you ever boiled your water then strained it in a coffee filter rather than go out and buy distilled or spring water? Thanks again!
I use so little of it, we just buy a case every couple months for emergencies. $2.00 a case on sale, and we have it if we have weather or power issues.
If you use semi gloss house paint for the base coat for acrylic pour, what do you use as a binder for the semi gloss??
I don't use a binder for bases. Most gets poured off and the amount of water added shouldn't break down the binder. If you feel the need to add a binder, you can use GAC800 or Glue All.
Thank you very much for your quick response Christina.
Hi Christina, Love your videos! I have 2 questions: What is the mat on top of your washing machine tray in all your videos? And in the paint mixing video you started to say don't use silicone drops if your paint is going to sit there for a long time and then.... either I missed it or you interrupted yourself:)? What was the reason? What happens? What if you like the effect but may not use your paint too often? Thanks for your help!!
Hi Christina, this video on base paint and the one on how to mix colours are from 2018. Are you still using the same recipes or have you filmed a more up to date videos on recipes? I’m a beginner, living in the UK, and learning about pouring from your videos. Thank you for your guidance 🌺
Yes I am!
Thx for sharing this .
Another question.......can you use house paint for your base coat?
yes half and half with floetrol
So half paint and half floetrol? I'm sorry. Sometimes I don't understand things the way I should because of a stroke. Please bear with me.
You are fine, it’s confusing. Ultra white satin or eggshell. 1 part paint, 1part floetrol, then add water to melted ice cream consistency.
@@ChristinaWelch good advice
Have you ever mixed house paints together to create another color? Is there anything to look out for? Thank you. I've decided to use your recipes out of all that I see. Thanks for your time in showing such clear instructions.
I have, but try to make sure they are all the same brand so you won't have any reactions from them. Not all paint is the same chemical makeup.
@@ChristinaWelch If I can ask one more question Christina, I bought some Behr Marquee Oops paint without checking them carefully. One is Interior Eggshell Enamel and the other is Interior/Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel. Do you think I can use Enamel paint for this pour painting and whether I can mix these different types together to obtain another color?
try a test cup and see how it dries. It may be too flat.
@@ChristinaWelch Thank you so much. That's such a sensible response.
Could you just use more flotrol instead of water to thin it out?
with white and black, water is usually needed to thin it too melted ice cream consistency
As I’m very new to pouring, the base paint here is for what techniques, due to its consistency?
Hi there
Is there any substitute for floetrol as we I haven't found it in S.A. to purchase from Amazon cost is around R500 but shipping and taxes push it to R2300.... :(
check with your paint stores. M1, acrylic primer and any type of paint conditioner should work.
Vvery helpful thank you. I do have a question and that is how do you know when to add floetrol vs water or once you've added flotral do you only add water from there on after?
I don't use water. I add floetrol until it's at consistency. Watch for a slight mound with a trace line. warm honey consistency. If you use water, use less floetrol
@@ChristinaWelch 3 minutes into the video you start adding water to the paint/flotral mix to make the base coat. What I'm trying to figure out is once you've already added flotral and you start adding water, at that point do you only add water to get to the consistency you want?
AIRaquarian 1 cup paint, 2 cups floetrol, 2/3 cup water should be perfect
Why does my base coat swamp my paints
maybe leaving too much paint on the canvas? Tilt as much as you can off. It's used to help your colors flow.
Hi! I have a question for you now.. 🤔 I haven’t mixed my housepaint with Flotrol, only water. The Flotrol is SO expensive here, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the extra cost to start using Flotrol… ? What difference does it make?
I do struggle with my base sometimes, but I don’t know if it’s because my painting isn’t level, or my base is to runny, to thick, to much, or what I’m doing wrong! 😭 Yesterday I made three GORGEOUS swipes, and today they all spred out and the composition is totally ruined! 😭 Do you have a tip for me? This doesn’t happen every time, not at all! But to perhaps 1/10 And 1/10 cracks… and 8/10 is perfect! I can’t see what I’m doing different with the success that I’m not doing with the disasters…. (As you can understand I’m very new to this hobby, trying to suck up every piece of information I can from YT, but not much is to be found about the BASE?!)
I’ll be SO grateful if you could give me some advice ❣️
Love from Sweden! /Cattis
sounds like your paint may be too thin. This basecoat is used like a flow extender. If you can't obtain Floetrol, you could use PVA glue. Mix equal parts with paint and then add water.
Is that the consistency for the base coat for all acrylic pouring?
for the base yes, not the colors you are pouring with. You only need this paint to help your colors flow.
Very instructive but what do you mean by 'a cup', ? I usually measure in Grams or Millimeters, or even ounces. Thanks
1 cup 8 ounces or 236.588 ml
Christina do you ever use house paint for your base coats?
I have in the past Leah and it works great. Just make sure if you are using housepaint that you add some glue or pouring medium to prevent cracking while it's drying. It doesn't have the binders that a heavy body pigment has.
ty Christina for answering all my questions. So do you still add water in your base or just the floetrol as you don't anymore on paints you mix?
basepaint does have water, only 10 percent
@@ChristinaWelch thanks
Did you say a cup of water but in one of your comment you said 2/3 cup of water? Great video. Thanks.
it depends on what brand of paint you are using. Some break down faster and you won't need as much water. Add 1/3 cup at a time until it's like melted ice cream.
Can you use gloss paint for the base paint? BarbaraWright
I have used it before, works fine.
Hi Tina. Why do you use purified water? What happens with tap water? Marty.
Hey Ken, some minerals in tap water may cause cracking or crazing. You can boil it for one minute and use when cool.
@@ChristinaWelch thank you. Marty
So if you are using white house paint, is it 1 part paint, 2 parts Floetrol and 1 part water? I've had a lot of trouble with it being too thick.
It shouldn't be thick with this mix. I use 1 cup of white paint, 2 cups floetrol and almost 1 cup of water.
Can you use house paint ?
yes you can! Mix 1 cup house paint to 1 1/2 cup floetrol and 1/2 water.
Can this be used for a dutch pour
you can definitely use for a dutch, however, I do not use floetrol in my dutch pour base paint. Check out my tutorial playlist for that recipe. Thank you!
I see that you use a thicker paint. Can you do the same process for a fluid paint? Or is it best with a thicker paint?
you can use fluids, you just may need to thicken them with a gel medium.
@@ChristinaWelch thank you. Makes sense now.
do you let the base coat dry first before pouring?
no, you use the base coat to help glide your pour off the sides so your design doesn't fold over and lose it's cell structure.
@@ChristinaWelch thank you!
@@ChristinaWelch should the base coat be thicker than the pour and should I use floetrol and silicone in base coat? sorry for all questions.
Does the ratio change with the body of paint your using?
Do you leave the base coat wet when you start pouring??? Or dry?
always wet
How long does the base caot last after mixing?
should be fine for a month or 2. I usually use most of my mixes within the month.
Do you have a video on mixing the paint used for the chain pull?
It's just paint and floetrol. Thick like runny pudding
Since I am a beginner in acrylic pouring I have a variety of questions and I have to say, I gained a lot from your tutorials.
Where can I get the metal basket that the canvas is sitting on when you work?
the cookie rack?
I don't understand, what is the purpose of mixing a 'base coat'? When do we use this instead of our standard painting mix?
this is for flip and drags, bottle bottom pours, string pulls, etc. Anytime you want to coat the canvas before doing a pour ie negative space
Are we coating our canvas this way for economics? I mean, so we don't use our more expensive pouring mix just to lay down a base coat? Or is there a mechanical reason why this technique works better?
its less paint, but thinner so whatever you put on top of it will flow. If you've ever done a flip and drag and it didn't stretch out enough, probably because your base color was too thick.
Je ne comprend pas l'anglais et si vous pouvez l'expliquer et faire un sous titre en francais, merci
I see alot of comments about doing the base paint and nit doing it correctly...? You dont even Need a base coat uf your using enough paint in your pours. Sometimes I dont like the basr coat because it shows up in lits of unwanted places in your other colors...like when tje white pops through...sometimes thats nit always a good thing.
I use it for flip and drags, pouring over or into a gadget or straight pours that will need to flow over the edge without folding over. You don't have to, but I recommend it so you don't lose composition.
J'aime bien ce tuto mais vous oubliez de donner les proportions de peinture et du floetrol, dommage ...
Do you use the same formula for mixing house paint as a base paint?
