1989 - what a year for UK pop music. And look at the variety. Something you just don't get in modern pop music.

Now this is my wheelhouse... JAMC, House Of Love, Wonderstuff, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, James, Debbie Harry, Happy Mondays, even Renegade Soundwave (who was one of the weirdest concerts I ever attended as they only had the backing tracks to 4 songs with them so they played them each twice and that was it)

Now that concert sounds pretty cool! I only know three songs of theirs (probably the ones they performed at this concert 🤣), but that's just mad! I hope you didn't pay too much.

Thank you for this upload 👍 Starts of with three great duets. I can't believe the Rod and Isley Brother duet didn't make the top 40. I heard that in a supermarket yesterday! I'm shocked the Aretha & James Brown duet wasn't a bigger hit either. That's two powerhouses there. Renegade Soundwave had a top 40 hit a few months later with the excellent 'Probably A Robbery'. Very shocked 'Janie's Got A Gun' and 'Freefallin'' weren't bigger here either. Absolutely shocking. Some classics that are viciously underrated in the UK chart. I don't understand Bad English's low place either! Everyone knows these songs! Great time for rock music this era was. So many good songs here. A 'group of death' situation. I was five at the time, but remember a lot of these songs. The rock / metal ones my Dad listened to a lot. Is Roni, Rona's sister?
My absolute favourite and deserved better than 25th place is 'This Woman's Work' by Kate Bush. Such a beautiful and heart-wrenching song. Probably my favourite song of hers. I do wonder at the end of the video, did the mother and baby survive or not? Just played it again in full, and it never ceases to move both the song and video. Second choice is my aunty's favourite band and one of the best groups from my home city, UB40 with 'Homely Girl'. I never forgot once when I was 15, I was out with my aunty and my cousins and Mum and she shouted to a man with green trainers 'You look better in the dark' 🤣 I smirk everytime I hear it. Third place....a toughie. I can't decide. If I had to, it would probably be 'Janie's Got A Gun'.

Now that's a concrete testimonial! I so agree that both Kate's and Aerosmith songs should have been rated higher, but in fact they stood the test of time superbly.

@@paleksander5192 Thank you. Indeed they both have and even now in 2022 they still sound like they could be made today. Classics in their own right. That period was very diverse but dance music was taking off and rock was at its best.

Rock and Roll Girl by Katrina And The Waves is an excellent song and should have been a huge hit. They were a highly talented band. When I See You Smile by Bad English ( John Waite vocals) reached number one in America and also should have risen high in the UK charts but a ballad of this quality rarely did by the late eighties.

Goodness me, Francis,- that was really in-depth research, especially in the field of house/rave/clubbing :)!!
4:11, a message shocking today much more than in 1989, it really only got to#76?
8:02, Lady Kate's ethereal voice and haunting performance on her last great album.

Strange but true. In December Jive Bunny and Band Aid 2 came in directly number one. So no november entries managed to reach number one.
The songs which reached number one in november came in charts in october.

The final UK number ones of the 1980s were mixed… Lisa Stansfield (All Around The World), New Kids On The Block (You Got It The Right Stuff), Jive Bunny (Let’s Party 🤮) and Band Aid 2 (Do They Know It’s Christmas). They all hit number 1 in November and December 1989.
I can’t stand Jive Bunny, the Lisa Stansfield song has been played to death ever since, New Kids isn’t a bad song and I know many people don’t like the mostly Stock Aitken Waterman artists on the second version of Band Aid, but I think it’s a decent version, it hardly gets played now and takes the charts nicely into the 1990s
