- GWR Double Castles 5043 & 7029 Roar Up The Lickey Incline With The Welsh Marches Express
Saturday 10th June 2023 would see a historic event in steam preservation, for the first time in history, 2 GWR Castles would double headed up the steepest railway gradient in the UK, the Lickey Incline. The 2 castles in question would be recently overhauled 5043 'Earl Of Mount Edgcume' & 7029 'Clun Castle' running the Welsh Marches Express from Birmingham New Street to Hereford, out via Bescot, Wolverhampton & Shrewsbury and returning via South Wales, Glocester & Cheltenham and the Lickey Incline. We could hear the 2 GWR Castles thundering through Bromsgrove station before beginning the unforgiving climb up to Blackwell where we hear them in full 8 Cylinder Chat up the 1 in 37.7 climb surprisingly without assistance from the diesel on the rear. It truly was a sight to behold and I don't think personally I'll ever see a better sight up the Lickey incline in my lifetime.

There was another tour that also came this way it’s pathfinder tours 50th anniversary to Weymouth with 40145 on the charge and I caught that one again at stoke priors

Yeah fair enough usually I'd of chased this and got multiple shots elsewhere. But I've never done the Lickey before been waiting for something spectacular to go up so when I saw the double headed castles I just had to do it! Kind regards Tom
I caught that tour at stoke priors and this is the second time seeing both of them on the tour only this time the Earl was in the leading position this time

Yeah definitely, on my way back to Bristol yesterday we ran at reduced speed down to Cheltenham due to flooding
