It's actually a very simple machine, it's basically an electronic magnet attached on an x and y axis kind of like a 3d printer, when it wants to move a piece the magnet goes under where the piece is, turns on thus grabbing it, then moves it to where it wants and shuts off. Not very complicated at all.

or, I just thought of it, it might be cheaper to put an electromagnet in there instead of a third motor, and it would work even better because you can control when the figure moves and when it doesn't...

do you have a link or something to it, would be interested to see it. I have one of these Saitek's Kasparov chess sets (it's from late 80-early 90s I think)... but the big difference is the pieces are not moving like these :)))

Genes from what i can tell, movement wise, they are the same. Obviously the computing power and the ability to play via an app against an online opponent wasn't there in 1980.

I had this idea myself!! I thought it would be cool to make a chess board where the pieces moved automatically using magnets in the board. I'm glad someone else made it first, because I never would have thought to use it to play against real people over the internet.

I think it's a mechanical multi jointed arm on two rails with electromagnet (solenoid) at one end. But what I don't know is how it differentiates between different pieces. Measuring solenoid's fluctuation for distinguishing different pieces? Possibly

It really doesn't look like a p.o.s. nor function like one apparently.
It's supposedly only ~$300 usd, the price of a gaming console. To be honest, most that money goes to the software development which I don't mind. Even the official Harry Potter chess set is $345.95+$34.65 tax and $14.99 shipping and there are poorer chess sets that are over $1000 too.

I had chessboard like that 30 years ago. Naturally it did not have remote opponent option but it had machine opponent.
What would be cool is if the board set up itself automatically, just dump the pieces on boards and they moved to corrects starting positions.
