I was sucked in by the wonderful cover artwork when I was brought this back in 1982. But I loved this album so much and still do. I was brought up on aqualung and thick as a brick and loved this more direct melodic approach. Synthesisers sound a bit dated now but great songs and feel to this album.

Hi I am a massive JT. I am all in with this reissue campaign. This is thexway to make box sets. Chrysalis Parlaphone and Mr. Anderson have said the standard. I am awaiting my set. Cannot wait... it took me a while... but decided to get it before they disappear. God bless Barry. Your unboxings and reviews are among my favorites. Your sense of humor and command of the English language is a bonus. Pardon me if I am repeating myself. Keep up the excellent work.

This album came out when I saw Tull play in Montpellier in France. It was so new my local music shop couldn't get hold of it before the concert. I was amazed by the new songs and especially the keyboards of Peter-John Vettese. "Broadsword", Beastie", "Watching You, Watching Me", "Clasp" are classics. My favourite Tull album alongside "Benefit". Waiting to see the price before ordering.
PS: Just checked on Amazon and put in my pre-order. Can't wait!
I usually refer to this album as "The Scottish Album" due to the references and the fact Ian Anderson is from my home town of Dunfermline and Peter-John Vettese from Edinburgh.

Hi - great review. I have been with Jethro Tull from day 1, and I have to say this is one of my favourite Tull albums, 80's sound or not - its just great !! I know - you cant beat the first 6 or 7 albums - all classics, but I mean - whats not to like about Broadsword ? Great songs and great playing. I have my order in :-) These are a wonderful series of Tull releases, unfortunately a number of them are extremely hard to find and IMO people are taking advantage of that and demanding hugely inflated prices for them. I get it - its supply and demand, but for Tull fans its very disappointing. They need to do some reissues on this series to bring more product into the market place and stop these rip off merchants demanding these outrageous prices. Thanks for a great review am looking forward to getting my copy to add to my collection. Cheers Doug (from Down Under)

I received the Box Set today. It is fabulous! It may be the best one of the lot. My top three Jethro Tull Box Sets are, in no particular order: Songs From the Wood, Heavy Horses, and Broadsword and the Beast. Two issues with the Box Set. 1.) The CDs/DVDs are difficult to take out and put in the case. At times I was worried I was going to either break the CD/DVD or the case itself. Be careful! 2.) Steven Wilson removed some of the fine flute work overdubs that Ian Anderson did for the Nightcap Editions, 20th year Box Set, and the 2005 Remastered Version of Broadsword and the Beast. Some examples are: Crew Nights, Rhythm in Gold, Motoreyes, etc. Having said that, the quality of Steven Wilson's remix is awesome!!! All in all, this is an awesome Box Set.

I wouldn't say the album is my favourite Tull album, there are too many to choose from for me to pick my favourite, what i will say though, its the most played of all my Tull albums, especially when i had the cassette, it was played constantly on my cars tape player until i replaced it on cd. I’m very intrigued by your review of this particular box set. The only time I’d ever seen Tull was actually the Broadsword and Beast tour in ‘ 83. What a great, theatrical performance. I have an original press of the vinyl that I bought weeks before the concert but the record itself is no longer in mint condition. Fortunately however, that magnificent cover art is still in good shape. Even though its not one of Tull ‘s strongest albums, I still like most of the tracks and this box set you’ve presented is most impressive. Not sure it’s within my means just yet but it’s most certainly very tempting and I will keep it in mind. Thanks !!

Although this is one of my favourite Tull albums, I don't think I will be buying this one. I have most of the others and caught them reasonably priced. However, the price puts me off this one, plus the desperately disappointing lack of video footage. There's quite a bit of live material for this time period so it's baffling why none made it here. Rights issues possibly?
Otherwise, the 20th anniversary version covers all the songs I really want from this excellent period of the band.

I love this album. But for whatever reason, I never got to see them perform this album live. One of my favorite features about these boxed reissues is the concert footage. Unfortunately, there is no concert footage, documentary footage, or ANY type of footage in this set, other than the same couple of dozen photos that display on repeat while playing the DVD audio. For the amount of cash I laid down for this particular set, that is a HUGE disappointment.
    Otherwise, great boxed set, right?

Maybe just me who noticed but the painting on page 107 has very much alikeness of Darth Maul character in Star Wars I: Phantom Meneace, released 1999, 17 years after this albums release.

You Under Wraps review led me to go back and listen to that album. This I don't need to. I have always liked TBatB. I liked it when it came out. Nice package but I don't think I need an 8 CD set of it.

One of the best Tull albums imo. I always thought the production quality was good particularly the 2005 remaster plus extra tracks. Shame there is no live dvd concert as there is plenty of CZcams footage from that era/tour so someone was filming it!

Barry, great presentation. Like all the anniversary versions and box sets it seems the unreleased stuff is more exciting. Agree with you about Overhang. What about Mayhem Maybe and Too Many Too?

So... even when it was released I had issues, but I was full-on into the "punk/new wave" at that time and did like a few of the songs, but not the general sound. Got this, of course.... and honestly.... this is where Jethro Tull becomes The Ian Anderson Band. I can't help but think the synths from now on all sound like presets as a way to stick it to John Evans and Dee Palmer who I suspect were responsible for LOTS of the great Tull musical moments. If only Eddie Jobson had stayed to put the reigns on Ian Anderson's Roger Waters tendencies...

Already ordered it, only because I hope the live Recording is from Hamburg ( April 8th 1982), since this was the very first Concert I ever went to.
Great Memory etc. Besides I still love this album after all these years and I' m eager to listen to all the additional Pieces.

There were a few good songs on this album, it was faaaar better than A that's for sure, but I think there are better tracks that weren't included from this session. If they didn't fit with Broadsword, I feel that Ian would have done himself a big favor by making them an album release the next year.

I hope they release the album on vinyl as a single or at best a double disc. Some of these enormous boxsets are out of financial reach for many fans. Boxsets that contain endless live recording and 3,000 versions of 1 song and include a lot of paraphernalia including demos and outtakes are probably aimed at the rich uber fan. The Who's Next album is typical of this trend towards including a lot of baggage or 'stuff' that ultimately will be shelved almost permanently by the purchaser. Caravan's monster 37 disc set is another example of this trend. So for avid wealthy collectors a good idea but i hope the alternative of releasing the remaster / remixed version of this Tull (without extra 'stuff') album will be available for those of us who just desire the original recording as intended but with the benefit of improved sound quality. Of course with these price tags comes along shorter print runs and therefore increased prices.

This album marked the beginning of the end of Tull’s greatness, IMO. A few solid tunes here, but the drop in quality compared to all that preceded it was sharp. As well, I’m hoping the remix breaths some much needed life into this album.

My copy arrived from BS this week, and have played every disc, so no problems with the media quality and the superb book. My only gripe is the shocking packaging of 6 of the discs, with flimsy plastic levers holding the discs in place . Two of the levers broke upon first opening, so all discs have now been placed in paper sleeves on a separate shelf to the book. Shame, they could have done a lot better. 🤔

Woody the wood pigeon here ,how can I stay safe when you want to blow my head off. I have ordered this from Burning Shed,a bit disappointed that no live video is included. A few days ago on you tube there was a video of Ian Anderson talking about a video from 82 that's going to be on you tube 1 night only from the broadsword era on the jethro tull channel on you tube, anybody else see it? I tried to find it again ,but I can't find it. Help ?

    👨🏻Enjoy it!
I’m going to pass on this one, since it’s not one of my personal favorites, but it’s a great offering for the price..
I have 15 tunes from the BaTB sessions above the original 10 tracks that I created my own CD with; the tracks came
from a few compilations that I purchased when released back in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. Also,
I have the SW remix of APP. Thinking about maybe another, but I have all the significant J Tull and IA releases from This Was up to and including Homo Erraticus, so I’ve got plenty to listen to. 👨🏻
I HAD to get the APP remix, the same way you had to get this one lol😉

I am lucky enough to have every one of these superb deluxe editions and I have my order in for this one and then my love of these box sets will be tested when the next in line is released, it is Under Wraps, an album I have tried to like but just can't. The horrible drum sounds and synths on a Jethro Tull album, no no no.....
