About "The Living Years"
A newly-formed choir of 300 patients, families, staff and volunteers from 18 hospices are aiming for this year’s Christmas number 1 - and to raise awareness of the hospice movement - with a cover of “The Living Years” alongside Paul Carrack, who was also lead vocalist on the original 1991 hit.
The multi-generational London Hospices Choir recorded their new take on the classic track at the world famous Abbey Road Studios and shot the moving music video with patients at Clapham’s Royal Trinity Hospice, under the direction of top Hollywood film director Annabel Jankel (Super Mario Bros, Live from Abbey Road).
Lead vocalist Paul Carrack said, “The Living Years has been an important song for me for many years, but this is the version that means the most. Recording it with this incredibly special group of people for such a worthwhile cause has created some kind of magic. It’s a powerful and inspiring track, and I hope that everyone gets behind it this Christmas.”
Choir member Lillian John (94), a patient at St Joseph’s Hospice, Hackney, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer more than 9 years ago said, “I have been given a new lease of life being part of the London Hospices Choir. St Joseph’s Hospice has been like a family to me, and now I feel like I am part of a huge extended family with 300 people all wanting to give something back to these wonderful places.”
Former MP Derek Wyatt, Chair of Trustees at Royal Trinity Hospice, who brought the choir together in honour of their 125th anniversary, said, “We hope that this song will encourage families to take time to have those important conversations as they come together for Christmas. Everyone who buys the song will also be helping London’s hospices to offer the best possible care at a time when every day is precious.”
Music producer James Hawkins said, “The idea of recording ‘The Living Years’ with this wonderful choir came to me as I was walking around the pond at Royal Trinity Hospice. The song’s message was reflected so strongly as I watched generations come together at a place of such serenity and life to share important conversations. It couldn’t be a better message for everyone to hear this Christmas.”
All profits from the sale of the single will be divided between the 18 hospices involved, helping them to support those reaching the end of their lives, and their families. The hospices include; Demelza Hospice Care for Children, Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, Harlington Hospice, Haven House, Marie Curie (Hampstead), Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, North London Hospice, Pembridge Palliative Care Centre, Princess Alice Hospice, Richard House, Royal Trinity Hospice, Shooting Star Chase, St Christopher’s, Saint Francis Hospice (Romford), The Hospice of St Francis (Berkhamsted), St Joseph’s Hospice (Hackney), St Luke’s Hospice and St Raphael’s Hospice.
I am currently watching my beautiful wife of 46 years slowly die of terminal cancer. We have had a fantastic life togther full of fun and good times and to see her now breaks my heart...... take care of your loved ones and tell them every day just how much they mean to you ..... you may not get another chance - fortunately I did ... God Bless my beautiful girl
These folks in the Video.
They have given their time, their travelling expenses, the ridicule from their respective families because they (some of em) can't sing ;-)
They have given and all for charity and a great one!!!
Kudos to them!!
If you don't cry listening to this beautiful song....Your not human. Love it in Texas Ya'all
Absolutely! Every time I listen to this song, I break down crying. 😢
I am agree , my dad passed away the last January 13th. I am missed so much, its true its too late when we die!
@@jasoncarpp7742It's very emotional and beautiful..... I get a lump in my throat every time I listen to this out of this World song
@@Giova6035 So do I.
It took me a week to get to see my Dad, When I was with him, he looked in my eyes and I said Dad I love you, he put his hands on my face and said I love you too son, that night he passed away. He had the heart and the love to wait for me to get there. That week I heard "The Living Years", everyday I miss him, my best friend, my Mentor my Dad.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful story! My Dad passed into heaven 2 years ago. We live on opposite coasts- he's on the west and I'm on th east. We had our conversation of the day and he was having hospice come. He told me, "I love you". I did not know he was going to pass away the next day. I miss him so much!
@@laurastreet7600 I'm so sorry for your loss and not knowing he was about to pass hurts but like me having the chance to say goodbye and realizing after he held on and waited for you as my Dad did is so wonderful but so sad. We feel sad when we remember him daily but smile inside when you think of his laughs, smiles and good times. Thank you so much for your message. Never forget.
@@jmsmacnab Yes-the laughter Dad would bring is like no other. Big hearty laughs and smiles. As I raised a family, he cared so much for each of us so deeply and we always had a great time. He would call often too. Yes- best friend Dad forever. I'm glad you got to see your Dad before he passed. The way he held you must have been so endearing.
Uff i have my father now at the hospital, he is 85 years old.. this song really makes my cry every time i listen to it... you can listen as well as you here...because its too late when we die.. melt me.

I was part of a hospice team for many years,so this video means a lot!
It was and will always be a sacred place in my heart as I got to be part of getting my dear friends( never thought of them as patients…they were much more…they were God’s creations) to meet the Lord!
I hope to see every one of them on my special day( I always told them to put in a good word for me) when I, too, go home and see my Savior and Lord!
God bless all the hospices !
My husband really loved this song, he never got to see his dad before he died who lived in Barbados, but he never told my hubby how ill he was and now I'm listening to this alone my hubby has gone to join his dad God Bless you both
Who cannot shed tears. The song is beautiful, the words are meaningful, the choir is inspirational. May this song bring hope and happiness.
Beautiful song, beautiful people....singing to me meaning of life and love. Thank you so much.
Little did Mike Rutherford and his writing companion know when they wrote this song that it would be relevant for many generations. Paul Carrack always delivered a brilliant performance.
I was honoured to be by my father's side when he died at Trinity Hospice on 14th December 1998 just after they had put up the Christmas Tree outside. They looked after him amazingly and they really deserve to get to No. 1. My respect and admiration goes out to all of you involved in this.
just read your post...sorry its a year out of date ( I am in H.M. Armed forces serving abroad !!!!!) I am so sorry for your loss. The Passing of a loved one, one never get used to .Moreover, the pain just becomes just that easier to bear. I , sadly was serving away when both my parents passed. I think the nurses & medics who choose to care for those with life limiting illness are DEFINITELY the ""special forces"" of the caring world.
May your god go with you
I lost my son n early two years ago.We had just found each other after forty years. This song Is the song we both loved to listen to,How l wish l could listen with him now.RIP Robx
What beautiful music. 'We don't see eye to eye'... I'm so grateful that didn't apply to my darling, my soulmate husband, who died in April this year. We saw eye to eye, were inseparable until cancer tore him from me. People, love each other, and SAY SO every chance you have. You never know when it'll be too late.
I agree. While my grandmother and I were of different generation, we still got along well. We had disagreements, who doesn't? But we still loved one another, and cared about one another. Even so, this song makes me think about her after she passed away.
I told my wife and soulmate how much I loved her, I found her dead the following day this May . life is fragile, Grief is so tough, I hope your coping, I still cry every day, I'm sure you do also
I'm still listening to this repeatedly. That choir is awe inspiring.
My father recently passed away a few months ago in the beginning of March. I remember he showed me this song to myself and my brother. I remember one of the last things I said was I love you and held his hand. I miss so much.
Always brings a tear to my eyes ,beautiful song, great choir and Paul,
one of the very best singers on the planetl
As good as when he recorded this song in 1989. What an amazing production. Well done everyone!
4 years after you posted, it would be a good reproduction with the original lead vocalist featured
Paul carrack sang lead vocals in 1989 with Mike and the mechanics when they released it as a single
@@Keithbarber Paul Carrack is singing in this video
absolutely amazing that song was played on my father's funeral
the people that make the difference.
Great Mr. Carrack.
ONE OF MY HEROES,IF WE TALKING ABOUT SINGING.
MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE
STILL GOINGSTRONG
AND ALL HIS SONG ALLWAYS IS ABOUT THE LIFE WE ALL LIVE ,MORE ALL LESS.
AND ALL THE FANTASTIC SONGS HE HAS DONE.
AMAZING!!
MR E SWEDEN
Awesome version of *"The Living Years."* The chorus always makes me cry whenever I listen. 😢
we enjoyed the filming and experience Thank You all for the lovely comments.
I lost my father in may 2016... I miss him every single day since then. He was my best friend, listener, adviser, everything.
This song made me happy to remind that I never missed an opportunity to tell how much I loved him, how pride I was/am on be his son.
Dad, one day I'll be able to hug you once again. Until then I'll continue to make you pride of me.
Always
Oh boy what a fantastic experience. I enjoyed every moment. A big thank you to everyone involved. Now let's make it number one!
so proud of my nan! front row white tshirt :) and we'll done to everyone involved!!
Absolutely beautiful! I have always loved these lyrics. I lost my dad ten years ago. These lyrics fit so well most of our life together but praise God we got things right before he died. If people could only take these words to heart!
This song reminds me of my grandmother when she passed away. We had our differences, and disagreements, but we talked a lot, and I got along with her better than with most family members.
beautiful song and version, brings tears to my eyes
I used to cry when this song first came out, still do sometimes. I thought about my dad, who was probably about my age (57). Now, decades later, my dad is almost 91 and probably won't be with us much longer, I know (he's doing o.k., but he's hurting and he's tired). This song has played in my mind over and over through the years. I know when he passes, I'll remember this song.
Paul Carrack has done what I wished I could've done as a musician. I wanted to claim ONE GOOD SONG that I could be proud of and I would've felt my life had been worthwhile.
My dad passed in 1982 - far too early - he never saw retirement and see his kids grow up and be proud of what they become. I miss all those conversations we could have had and for him to be a granddad to all our children.
A beautiful and very expressive version of a song that I have loved for years, by Mike and the Mechanics. To me, enjoying more than one version of a song's performance without feeling any need to judge in comparison makes me richer musically than those who limit themselves to just one version that they like
best.
AMEN!
Amazing, so memorable and meaningful!
Everyone Needs to download this track and give the Hospices the Xmas No 1...they deserve it.. their work needs to applauded and celebrated they give such incredible support and care when its needed ...
What a wonderful tribute to those in need of help. My hat's off to Paul Carrack!
So glad to be part of this and I only hope that people get behind such a great cause♡ #Hospices4xmasno1
Whatever religion you follow or not, this song is perfect for anyone who's lost a friend or family member.
Oh my goodness!! That was the most wonderful video. Beautiful song beautifully sung and produced. It MUST go to number 1.
Its so great to see all these fantastic people from so many hospices across London uniting together to make this wonderful song and video. I have loved every moment! lets get to number 1! #hospices4xmasno1
You know that old trope about a desert island and the 5 albums you get to have with you? One of them has to be "The Best of Paul Carrack." This man is EXACTLY what a pop singer should sound like. He is an unflagging delight and a world treasure. Bless his wonderful soul.
Paul, love you!
Paul is one the greatest artists of all time. His music with this song and video proves it.
Bless the nurses, doctors, caretakers, janitors and all staff that make a hospital run to care for ALL people. You are all the backbone of care to people around the world.
Blessings from Tomball, Texas
You are loved.
Just Brilliant
The first time I heard this song was back in the 80s, when Mike and the Mechanics sang the song.
FANTASTIC....... MY DAD LOVED THIS SONG SADLY WE LOST HIM 8YS AGO SO WE PLAYED IT AT HIS FUNERAL AS HE WASNT THERE WHEN HIS DAD PASSED.......... XXX
This is such a beautiful and deeply touching performance ; an incredibly moving song sung so joyously by Paul Carrack , a wonderful artist with an amazing voice and an exciting group from hospices singing their hearts out . I feel this so deeply in my heart ; I play it multiple times almost every day . I sincerely thank everyone involved in this splendid video . Long live them all. George Lewis, Sr.
Keep telling all your family and friends. This is so good and such an important cause to raise money and awareness.
Just a HEART - GRASPING ! PAUL Chapeau ! You Are a MAN who knows what COUNTS in the World 🌍 !
I'll never forget the wonderful hospice nurse helping my mom to get up from her chair, my Mom looked at her with such thankful trusting, caring eyes, it really moved me. They were wonderful to my beautiful mom. Thank you.
Such an amazing experience, This deserves to be Christmas number one, the work these incredible people do everyday! #hospices4xmasno1
Could of also had your version from the rehearsal on the disc too! ☆♡☆
It would be so nice that the whole world's population could together like this.
This is the first song I've purchased in years.
I hope it gets high up in the charts in the run up to Christmas.
This has to be the Christmas number 1
TONY BUTLER I absolutely agree.
Real and sincere lyrics. I broke into tears, for the living years. It's too late when we die...
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you to all involved in production!

I'm so proud to have been part of this amazing experience, and thanks to Paul Carrack for his fantastic vocal. Please help make this No 1 for Xmas this year and support the great work that Hospices offer across London and the UK.

Brilliant!! Such a good cause. People should never take their loved ones for granted. This is such a fantastic cause and a brilliant cause and bunch of people. Well done for being the Christmas 2016 No.1!!
absolutely beautiful.
I am so very thankful for the time I sat bedside while my father spent his final months in hospice care dying from pancreatic cancer. I know others who are kicking themselves after avoiding that for whichever reason they chose at the time.
Very moving - and beautiful!
So Beautiful
GET THIS SONG TO #1!!!
So thrilled to have been involved in this project - let's hope this goes to #XmasNo1 to raise vital funds for the all these hospices and the incredible work they do each and every day. Beautiful arrangement of this song & equally beautiful video :)

Brilliant with a powerful message.
Magnificent deeper rendering
I can't begin to tell you how long I've loved your singing!!!
Brilliant
The tone of the lead vocal at the start was like pouring cold water over hot barbecue!
fantastic remake!
Comovente!
I love it
This song reminds me of my father who had passed away in July or August of last year. I didn't get to see him when he died, partly due to Covid. I'd talk to him over the phone over the past year, but it's not the same. Although we had our differences of opinion and beliefs, I still loved him and cared about him.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING _ THANKS TO ALL INVOLVED IN THIS PRODUCTION !!!!
Thank you God for letting me know only love in their living years being with, mam dad when thay passed 🙏
What an inspiring video and message. Please God bless each one and bring peace and love to them.
This song would be perfect for anyone who doesn't like to sing solo, or can't sing solo, but love to sing in a group. Sometimes choruses sing better than solo singers ever could.
So great. Song of my life except I was fortunate to be with my father at the end.
now it it up to everyone to make this 2016 Christmas No 1 - love and truth is not just for Christmas xxxxxxxxx
needed this song to spell out my relationship my own father....
Remind me of my late Daddy in heaven.. 😭
Better than the original version
Wonderfully put together,,,deserves to be at Christmas number one,,,& where would hospices be without these loyal caring people ,,,👍
04 08 2021 I'm crying watching this, RIP Mom and Dad.

One of my very favourite songs ... but I've never seen/heard this wonderful version before. So well put together.
