Mirko had insane flexibility and control, he trained that kick from a child. He rolled his hip way later than everybody else, you can watch his foot externally rotate at the moment of impact as his quad contracts.
So he trained his kick from child or ?🤣

That kick should be dubbed the "Cro Cop". When I see someone get dropped by that kick no matter who's fighting I always yell "Whoah! Dude just got Cro Copped!"

Still consider him to be one of if not the greatest, wish he could aligned his age/prime with the ufc better anyone who knows fighting has respect for cro cop!!
I also feel that one of Cro Cop's technique was that he kept his leg chambered until the last second so for the opponent it was almost impossible to tell his leg was going to the head or the body.
yes, he would extend the leg at the very last moment.
That's a classical karate/taekwondo way to kick
there is more to the punch than that, bcos he in the last second goes over than down
Actually Cro Cop was also striking with his heel sliding across the dome to the other side. That was maybe because his legs were slightly shorter for a HW. I don't know, but I noticed it a few times. I think he did it against Dos Caras ( the masked guy) and Wanderlei Silva. I'm surprised he didn't mention that.
His timing was also difficult to decipher because there were times he threw a kick from a pivot instead of a step. Like you said, zero idea if that was aimed for the legs, body, or head. Everyone knew a kick to the head was lights out, which made the body and leg kicks more lethal.

Another detail, Crocop stretched his leg at the very last moment, later then most fighters.
"If the head is too high, go for the liver"
I think everything in that kick, or his whole arsenal of strikes, were meant to be as unpredictable as possible. Whenever he would strike, there would be a little upper body motion, but the opponent couldn't tell if it was a cross or a mid/high kick, and if any landed, he could ko them. Scary power.
Not to mention he had the perfect legs for the technique too, big monster quads, calves, hamstrings all that damn weight, that damn kick was like a double barrel shotgun semi truck from turbine hell, he was the mike tyson of leg kicks for sure. Personally I always thought the best strikers were really good kickers, for instance Apidej in muay thai would break opponents forearms and still to this day has the best muay thai record, also put lorlek another master who has a ton of muay thai head kick KOs and even bested the legendary samart in an exhibition match with head kicks
Man this comment aged well, leon edwards became the champ from headkick, gaethje won the BMF belt with headkick, and then islam defending his belt against volk with a head kick all within a year. Who else am i forgetting to mention?

I have always found it awesome how you can be so humble, have a great personality and also be a savage killer. I think you're a great example of what a true martial artist should be. I love seeing the mutual respect between fighters and that has carried over for me in my training. My dad was a huge boxing then MMA fan and used to laugh and say that you guys loved the pain of getting hit, you seem to enjoy it too much. Thank you for the great videos and for continuing to inspire old guys like me, 50, to keep training and I'm proud to say that I can do a right head kick. I felt great about kicking my head level, 6'3, until you said to kick on the top of the head. Great, now I'm gonna rip every muscle in my leg. lol. I've never met Mirko, but he does answer me when I message him on Facebook and is so nice. Thank you for these great videos.

Cro Cop was able to hide his "Cemetery" behind his 1 -2 and did this very effectively. He started throwing the kick behind the punches when his opponents knew he could throw it without telegraphing it. He also hit many people with the forefoot 'top of his foot', this also gave him a great deal of extension on his kicks, giving him a lot more momentum and force behind it.
I trained for years and emulated his kick, watching him repeatedly for motivation. I used it in full contact sparring many times and had heaps of success when using it.
That zoom in right to 1996 video transition made me laugh hard! Good job

Another thing cro cop did was to delay the extension of his leg to the last possible second and the extension itself was insanely fast.
