Camilla Nord leads the Mental Health Neuroscience Lab at the University of Cambridge. Her lab explores the brain, body, and cognitive changes that drive mental health and disorder. Her lab’s aim is to translate insights from neuroscience into improved treatments for mental health conditions, whether that’s by making better use of our current treatment arsenal by targeting treatments to personalised brain or cognitive profiles, or inventing novel, neuroscience-based treatments that might be better able to treat disabling symptoms of mental health conditions.
Camilla was named a Rising Star by the US Association for Psychological Science, received the Young Scientist Award from the European Society of Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, and has been awarded over £14 million in research funding, including from Wellcome and the Medical Research Council (MRC). Her work has been widely featured in the media, including in the Sunday Times, BBC’s The Naked Scientist, and the New Statesman. Her first book, The Balanced Brain (Allen Lane) was named one of the FT’s ‘Best books of the year’ in 2023.

Well, my PhD was in interaction between body and mind in panic attacks. We looked at the blood, saliva, food and various questionnaires. It was in 1999. And nobody wanted to finance further research. :)

This is not new. The Yoga Biomedical Trust was thriving at Cambridge University, under the direction of Dr Robin Monroe, in the 1980’s. They published an extensive bibliography (1989 ?). Eventually they became part of the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
A similar group operated in Paris, under the direction of Michelins Flak and Jacques de Coulom, and Recherche sur le Yoga dans l’Education. They held conferences and had direct input into the Cambridge group.

thanks that was interesting, I think there are also instances of heightened interoception for instance in IBS patients suffering from visceral hypersensitivity. it really shows how the body can influence the mind and viceversa. future research should try to unveil those reciprocal dynamics

Those with "social anxiety" type personalities, both the autistic types and the more histrionic types (together making up a majority of the human population right now), will indeed benefit from some training as to how to interpret and use their own physical feelings, as well as their emotions (which model their relationships to others) to better serve their needs.

"Mental health" is not a compelling model of the mind and its myriad dysfunctions as these dysfunctions are essentially subjective. This research thrust is more scientism than science; an updated esotericism or astral projection. The flavour of hubris is all to familiar, however, in these self-proclaimed "experts," whom increasingly seem like cultists. They've probably just become a little too enamoured with their Yoga!

The fact this topic seems novel & even surprising for 'professionals' is ridiculous, they seem oblivious to the fact western lifestyle is FAR from human natural habitat...
The fact these young people have to experiment with mild discomfort is insanity.
Well-fed people like these middle class snowflakes who haven't gone a DAY without food, hardly surprising they are sensitive to trivial inputs.
And a constant diet of sugar & caffeine... whether carnivore or vegan, cultural norms of alcohol etc...
Trying to use yoga or some other woowoo is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Meanwhile people in ironically termed 'less developed ' nations can survive & thrive on basic foods without the toxic packaged garbage - and just get on with life without whining about how hangry they get if they missed their Starbucks.
Self-absorbed drivel. Is this the Royal Institution?

psychiatric disorders are not genetic, they are caused from how people trained their neural pathways to think. medication doesnt solve any "mental disorder", they just cover they symptoms. Having someone with schizophrenia take something that turns them into a zombie doesnt fix anything. psychologists and psychiatrist care about your problems and disorders until they quit making money off it.
Things I consider genetic are things like autism and down syndrome, I don't think all diagnosed with autism are actually autistic though, some people are just different from how they raised their brain to think from the experiences they've had. ADHD? Who coined that term? It's normal to not want to pay attention to things that don't interest you.
