  • How much money do you need to live in the Philippines as an expat from a western country and still have a better life than you did at home? This video is where I answer that question based on my thoughts. You can survive on less, but is that why you really want to be in the Philippines as an Expat? Much of this depends on where you live. If you are planning on Manila your costs will be much higher than in the province or even in Davao. Cost of living in the Philippines and how much money you need. Can you live on $1000 a month in Philippines?

If you want a cool life style cost of living in philippines, honestly you need 1,700 to 2,000 dollars per month. If you are practical and on a budget you just need 800 to 1,000 dollars.

That sounds about right, but most Americans will want to travel from time to time, save, etc. with that said, I think $2500 to 3k would be sufficient depending on your housing. This is considering a family though. Wife and at least one kid.

With a third of that (and even a little less) I don't miss anything. Once we live there when retired I will need a little more for the fuel of our car which we intend to buy.

Now a lot of people in the United States would say that's impossible but I'm doing it and I'm doing it on $13 an hour with child support coming out. Not only that I visited the Philippines and Thailand making that low wage in last 3 years. It's going to vary greatly based on individuals

A very subjective topic since some expats want the swanky condo lifestyle while others want to settle in a sleepy community or live the province life.....the differences will be considerable. In my opinion, having $1500/mo. should be plenty for ONE PERSON to afford a comfortable lifestyle while stashing away a little each month for emergencies. Assuming you're going to live off of savings or investments, if you're a 60 year old in good health with a life expectancy of 85...then: 1500/mo. x 12 = 18000/yr. 18000 x 25/yrs. = 450,000. Now if you're from the US and have a decent SSA (or pension) monthly income, then you don't need a kings ransom in the bank. However, having no savings while living in the Philippines is asking for trouble.

@@Aggie4life77Not to be rude but I think you are all a just a little bit insane, lol. I live in America for $150 a month and need to lose weight! I own my own place and land, no rent, I have solar, no electricity bill ever, and I can easily live off $75 a month in food! Over there I will get a $100 apartment, install solar, so no electric bill again ever, internet and food won't be more than here, so I will still be about $150-200. I don't want or need a girlfriend right now so I will chill by the beach and fish, which I love to do and you don't need a license there to do either. So I will also have free fresh fish periodically, and even snorkel for a lobster or crab here and there. I guess none of you know how to cook well huh? I love to cook more than almost anything, and it is dirt cheap. Wow. 1.5k just to get by minimum?? And you know you can travel by Island hopping all day to like 5 islands and snorkel and get a meal including with crab etc for only $25 right? I could even do that a couple times a month on $250 total. I just don't get how you guys all need a massive house with 4 ac units and to eat expensive food every day when good cheap food is everywhere there. But to each their own I guess! And I was kidding about being insane, it's just insane to me. Jasper spends 1k there a month total and has an appartment on Boracay AND the penthouse on the 70th floor in Makati! 12 years na in Pinas....$1000 is only enough IF you live a very simple province life OR a city life owning your own condo in cash(do not rent), don't have a woman, don't run AC, and do not own a car(just a scooter). Just routinely running AC will cost you 200 a month easily for a condo and 300 for a bigger house. Even having a very thrifty low cost women will increase your costs a lot to at least $1500. This is living a simple life ...kind of a low end Western life.
Yeah load of pinoys live on $200 US a month and even less ! but that is a super spartan life and next to no housing costs(multi generational living or living in a boarding house) and their dietary intake is well...crap(unhealthy) to say the least.
I'm a simple man that owns a house and lot in my son's name(mestizo pinoy citizen) and I have a wife and 2000 US is about my sweet spot and that is NOT living in the lap of luxury by any means ...it's a simple lower end mixed pinoy Western life.
So guys REALLY now....the days of living on 1000 a month are pretty much over thanks to the huge increase in the cost of housing since covid....you can do it but most of you guys won't be happy over the long haul.
MEDICAL COSTS! Medication is cheap , however, forget healthcare insurance as it high cost here and when you want to use it everything seems to be a pre existing condition..... Healthcare way cheaper than in the USA BUT you better have at least 50-100 grand for an emergency medical fund cause it's not "that" cheap and you sure the hell don't want to be in a public hospital!
That 50-100 grand is also needed for blood money because it you injure a pinoy with your car or bike YOU better pay even if it is not your fault ...that is one way to get killed in Pinas (not paying blood money). Pinas is safer than the USA for the most part EXCEPT in this regard and in regards to politics(do not express opinions or get involved PERIOD)

Exactly. Why these guys never spent $1k on solar and never have to pay an electric bill ever again is so far beyond me I can't even wrap my head around it. I have lived off solar for years here in the US. I Have my own place and land paid off. I live for less than $200 a month easily and have to lose weight! And that includes internet, etc. I could get a $100 pad over there, eat out more than normal, but I love to cook at home, and still pay less than $300 a month. Chris is going to interview a guy there that lives for $107 a month TOTAL. For everything. I guess some people just like throwing money away and think it is a "Higher standard" if they pay an electric bill and never learn to cook a meal themselves, but whatever, lol. 🤷
I saw that body builder in his "Go with Ali" channel try and spend $100 on street food in Cebu and after two hours and stuffing himself to death he spent less than $5, lol. So $15 a day eating out just means they haven't learned the right places to eat yet. Or want to throw money away on American type food? Anyway, I see a total difference with people and their spending habits, and almost zero difference in their "Standard of living" other than some want to live in a mansion just "Because" and that's cool. But Tim K has a.mansion on the ocean shore for $500 a month, so I don't see how these guys want to pay more, but to each their own. 🤷

Agree that rent is the biggest expense. Try to look for rent-to-own condo units so you’ll have equity. Then if you plan to leave, find a buyer who will assume the balance and give you back your home equity. Look at the fine print of the contract before you sign it. This is for those who want to settle here for good. If you will live a nomadic life, however, this will be a burden.

Plus support a couple of really poor people with sacks of rice in December, carrying it to them personally.

Services are dirt cheap, a haircut for a dollar, but make sure they use a fresh razorblade. Anything name brand costs more, gas, electricity are much higher. Depends on what you want and what you feel you need. We don't need much when we are there, because we have our own house (my wife inherited it from her parents). We only renovated it 15 years ago (it needs another one in the next few years). It's not big, it's comparably simple (western standards apply), doesn't even have air-condition (I don't need that) and is in a suburb of a provincial capital in Northern Mindanao. When being there, I am the only "Americano" in our barangay (plus the surrounding ones), which is very enjoyable. Expatriates live somewhere else in the city in areas I don't want to live. Fish- and green-grocery-street-market is 100 yards away from us, a supermarket maybe 500 yards in walking distance. Lots of green all around, because the city-center is 3 miles away. Water-supply is only on paper, because most time nothing comes from the pipes (lack of pipe-pressure, because the house is built on slightly higher ground than the surrounding ones). We collect rain-water in big drums for showering and dish-washing and also get it from my wife's family, who have running water on the same compound (and collect rainwater additionally). My wife's family is not poor, all of them have their own car, some even more than one. We have five MDs in the family, among others.

without rent you can live ok on about US$210 per month. Buy and cook your food, it wont make your tummy as bad and the difference between what you say $15 a day is like $450 a month, buying it and cooking it will cost about $155 a month, electricity is ok its only expensive if you are a philippino. I would say for a westener you would pay about 250 WITH air con per month. They dont have staggered rates, just the one overall rate, I think its currently about US23 cents a KwHr. You really NEED to own a vehicle otherwise the public transport is SHOCKING, uncomfortable and rotten but cheap. Petrol prices are not cheap though at about US$1-44 a liter . You dont get your car insured because there is no such thing as comprehensive insurance available, so make sure your car is fitted with a dash cam! And DRIVE safely! If you get pulled up by the local crocodiles NEVER hand over your licence, have some copies with you and hand THESE over instead and REFUSE to pay a bribe, which is usually why they pull you up in the first place, best way to get out of this is to say " I think your new government is trying to stamp out corruption? @@stevier3510Hey Steve, I am like you. One guy got a two story 3 bedroom apartment in a gated community with a guard just outside Cebu for $150 a month. I am just going to get a small place in Cebu for around $100. And they are there, I have seen them advertised as recently as last week. They are tiny, but I don't want or need a big place. To me it's just a place to sleep out of the elements. I love to cook as well. This guy in the video says minimum $300 a month on food, lol. I live off less than $100 a month in America in food and I need to lose weight! I have the money to spend more but I honestly can't eat any more than I already do! You can get health insurance there for a hundred or so a month, then electric and Internet together for $100. You could easily live there for $500 a month the way you are talking, no problem at all. With $1k a month you could save a lot for emergencies. These guys just love to spend $500+ a month on a giant house for whatever reason. But you could be in Cebu in a moderate sized 1 bedroom for $200 pretty easily. Say $100 for food if you cook at home. $100 for electric/Internet, and $100 life insurance. You would still only be at $500 a month. See what I mean? I don't think any of these guys even know how to cook, lol. Or must hate it. I love it. I have tentative plans to go in October. I will stop by and say hello when I get there. And you will be fine, brother. Don't let these guys that way over spend on everything make you think it costs so much there. It's just an ego thing I think. I honestly believe if they lived a great life on $600 it would make them feel like a loser no matter how happy they actually were. It's a weird phenomena I've seen a lot in guys over there. They need a house big enough to fit said ego. They will learn one day perhaps. Maybe not. I don't think they research how to get cheap plane flights or anything. They spend a ton on travel there and I can go to the exact same places for next to nothing. Anyway, take care, brother! - Kevin Venture

You don't give much information. Does she have her visa approved and you have a flight scheduled or are you starting that process once you arrive? Are you retired with a healthcare plan or on your own plan? What is your current health? All that and more are important factors. Information I received from Medicare (and the attached private plans) indicated they only cover emergency services in the emergency room visits. If everything is already scheduled you may want to check on international short term trip plans to cover the period you are traveling. There are also yearly and expat plans available. Phil heath, the government plan, is almost useless. It does not cover doctor visits and paid less than 10% of my wife's two C-section deliveries. Which fortunately were both below $3,000 USD. The typical doctor visit fee in Bacolod is less than $20. Maintenance medicine and supplements are very very expensive here so if you use any look into bringing as much as you can and or having a friend or relative ship them to you. USPS takes 2 or 3 weeks to get to Bacolod. Good luck.

I’ve heard a lot about cost over there and to me, I look at the biggest expense the most. The way I want to live there, I would need at least 1k to $1200 month on housing. I’m not saying I have to pay that much, but that’s what I will budget. I will definitely be running that air conditioning so add another $300. Food is tricky. I’m just going to assume it will be and my girlfriend/wife as I won’t stay single long. I would say another $300 a month as I like to eat out from time to time. That budget may go up a bit lol! Internet and phone would add another $100+. For basic life I’m looking at around 2k, but I haven’t talked about transportation, health insurance, traveling and saving. I will add another 1k to cover all that to keep it simple. That’s 3k per month or 36k per year. I work remote and make double that after taxes. It’s time for me to go lol! I just want to save up a year of expenses just in case of job loss, etc. this will give me time to find another gig.

I have found that as long as you OWN your house and car free and clear, you can live quite comfortably on 2000 to 2500 USD. Our bills in the Philippines in Isabela province runs roughly 4000 pesos a month for electrical including air con running every night only, 1400 pesos for internet, 1200 for Netflix, 2400 for LP gas, 30,000 pesos for food. So far that is roughly 800 USD which leaves 1200 USD left over on a 2000 USD budget or 1700 USD left over on a 2500 USD a month budget. BUT this is if you ALREADY own your own car and house free and clear. And this is based on what it costs us to live in Isabela province. I imagine living in a major city will up your costs somewhat. But that is what it costs us to live in the Philippines and we live quite comfortably, we travel, eat out, etc. So in my opinion the target amount should be 2000 to 2500 USD. And this is a budget for the 4 of us.

Some talking 1.5K for a single person but told us about get out forr dating and drink.
    Some said 1K.

How much for a COUPLE to live in... ??
How much for a FAMILY to live in... ??
MOST of thoses video talking about a SINGLE person coming EXPAT in Philippine or Thailand.
So peoples need to understand thats before trying to estimate their money needs.
You don't need the same amount of money if you are alone than if you are a family of 3....
That's why thoses kind of video are always tricky in the comment section because each peoples tell others money numbers but based on THEIR need and not the reality of each differrents situations.

This is totally ignorant from a Dr. No an American especially cannot live in the Philippines without Air conditioning! These are the plain facts you need at least being single $1500 a month some months you will use less, but in the beginning months you will probably use more! That's monthly! Then what do you need to get setup coffee maker, cable bottled water transportation Entertainment etc etc. Then you need a nest egg for medical, airfare and believe it or not disaster relief funds and again etc etc. If you had all those things in place already sure you can survive for less, But are you coming here to live or barely survive! If that's the case stay in the states at least you have agencies that may help your situation, rest a sure you will not get any help or very little here and that goes for the Embassy. If your thinking of coming here to live then you need to spend at least a month here and making arrangements on how that transition is going to go into effect. The biggest thing foreigners face is Culture Shock, this is what beats them all, they came here thinking everyone speaks English, then they experience the Filipino way and they go what that's not the way that's absurd that's just harder not logical all to the Western way of thinking their way
and so it takes it's toll and they find that they cannot acclimate, assimilate or acquiesce to living in the Philippines. Let me leave you with this: foreigners should never negotiate for themselves always have a Philippine person do that for you, I promise you they will get a better deal. But if you think you can go ahead, you might as well wear a Santa suit. There are many bloggers out there looking to supplement their income stream and some will do or say anything to boost their audience I'm not saying that this blogger is doing that at all, but beware their are those. In closing: live here over 20 years, never met an expat that did not have a horror story including me! I absolutely love this country
