This guy's influence on me as a drummer cannot be overstated. I passed up probably my last chance to see Black Sabbath this year because he's not playing. NO BILL WARD = NO BLACK SABBATH!
Yeah...! Me too... I don't wanna see the lastest Sabbath tour without Bill Ward. Total desrespect to one of the four monsters from Birmingham who created heavy metal... Bill rules!
You provide the actual freakin' studio drum track from a freakin' classic Sabbath album and some idiot is complaining that theres bleed through ( from Wards headphones) - un-frickn-believable !! And thank you for sharing this rare gem of R&R history ... To the idiot: Its part of the track - the engineers couldn't even remove it if they had wanted to... get it ??? Geeesh
Theres always a way. They could have used special double offset microphones. But those were mostly used for live concert and particularly for the voice.
I don't think it's from Bill Ward's headphones, it is too loud and he would be good and deaf; I think more of the drums mics catching the other instruments/voice from the other rooms.
It's so cool that three of the most defining drummers of this era were Cozy Powell, John Bonham and Bill Ward and they were all actually really good friend with one another!!
I would rather here the little shifts in timing and minute mistakes that only drummers would catch. This creation even with it's flaws is much more worthy of respect than the machines and sampling they try to pass off as musical art today...
Bill swings and he's a pretty busy guy compared to Appice or Powell. I love the way he uses the bass drum in combination with the snare drum. A song like Symptom of the Universe clearly showcases Bill's musical drumming. He can freak out like the best but he also has an ear for detail, as you can hear during the slow part at the end of "Symptom". He always plays a rhythm pattern that enhances a riff or a melody. Bill and his music are "one" ! Also, rock drummers who are familiar with jazz have always interested me more than the others.
You can hear how the early hard rock drummers learned from Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and Max Roach. I completely agree about how jazz influence makes the drumming more interesting. After hand the swing fell out. Only the hard bits remain in much of modern ”hard” drumming. I so love this garage sounding distorted swing. Barriemore Barlow is another one of the greats.
I was privileged to have seen Black Sabbath in Portland, Oregon in 1999 with Pantera and incubus as opening acts. Everyone went outside on the smoking porch when Incubus played LOL
Compare the snare drum sound in the first half of the song (e.g., 0:30 ) to later in the (e.g., 3:47). It starts off nice and tight, but by the end is "ringier." Notice during the drum fill at around 2:24 or 2:25, and it sounds as if the snare drum switch (lever, etc.) comes slightly loose at this point, and from this point forward, it sounds "ringier."
I got the feeling he removed or the tape or maybe his wallet came loose or fell off the snare. He loosened the tone control maybe? it just sounds less muffled to me.
Yeah, I hear it too. Big difference. It sounds like he was using something to muffle the snare and then maybe his crazy drum solo/fill knocked it loose or off. I wonder if that bugged them, Black Sabbath, or if they didn’t even notice the change? More than likely, they didn’t care. Still sounds great as a whole, though.
Man you could sell this isolated track as a Parliament Funkadelic Mothership connection outtake. That´s the thang with guys like Ward, John Bonham, Lee Kerslake and Ian Paice: they layeth down the funk groove. This is why Ward is such a crucial part of the Sabbath sound.
Just wanted to thank you for uploading this, had a drum set for liek a year and only dicked around with it for a few days when i got it, always wanted to learn this song, after finding this video and practicing for an hr and a half i can play up to 50secs pretty well and consistently, and its fun as hell, dont think i woulda been compelled to pick it up after all this time if i didnt find this vid, thanks :)
Vol 4 is a drum album. One of the Bill Ward octopus album. The construction and stuff he does on that record ( as most he did ) are incredible. Vol 4 and the Sabotage - Technical Ecstasy - Never Said Die on rythm section are pieces of art
OG hard hitter, major body english. After watching him live, I was inspired to bash a kit, and so I did. Thanks Bill for setting me down the hard path and not the light one.
They recorded it live and added overdubs later, so your going to pick up some of the band while recorded it. so in other words this is on the drum track and can't be removed because the drum Microphones picked it up while recording.
And no click track! (check out the tempo at the very end...slightly faster than the beginning). How fucking liberating. Click tracks stifle the organic 'feel' of a song; tempos are naturally elastic in a band dynamic, not metronomically perfect! Tyrannical bastards! Bill Ward has so much groove, feel and swing in what he plays, but incorporates all of that into a hard rock context. So innovative, especially for the time. The guy's a fucking genius.
aside the first "alright now," the melody and lyrics are different in the guide vocal heard faintly in this drum track. it's interesting to hear this earlier version of the vocal line: similar phrasing and notes, but there are places where the rhythms and pitches of the melody are different
How do I find more of these? I know the first 2 albums were recorded live in the studio but I would do anything to hear some individual tracks from sabbath bloody sabbath
Boy there are a lot of dumb people in these comments. If someone had ears that worked, it's completely obvious this is the studio cut. And if anyone knew anything about recording, they'd realize there is leakage. People are dopey.
No, thats what you 'assumed' and you know what they say ... never mind, you probably don't. This IS exactly what it says 'drum track'. It was labeled 'drum track' in the studio when recorded and properly labeled here as such. Kinda like searching for Neil Armstrongs famous 'moon landing' comment and, after listening to it, complaining the recording is invalid because you didn't hear him say the word 'A' .. .It is what it is. "Alright now ... !"
Amazing! That kick drum pattern is killing it. Bill had a foot like a jack rabbit dinosaur! Shame how much is missing in Wards actual performance on the album. You can barely hear the kick on Master of reality. Imagine if they spent more time properly miking Bills kit like they did on later albums, like Sabotage for example. One of the reasons he was so underated compared to Bonham etc, is cuz you couldn't even hear everything he was really doing. Fucking tremendous!!!

I always felt that Ward was poorly produced. It wasn't until Sabotage that he was miked and mixed properly. Nevertheless, his technique and sound are unique.
Imagine if Bill Ward were afforded the same production quality that John Bonham had? You never had to struggle to hear the details of what Bonham played.
Since you seem to know it all I guess theres no need in explaining to you that new school can't do anything with the old school track. This IS the isolated track - just what it says, and the track includes bleed. 500Hz is 500Hz whether its made by a human voice, instrument or rubber band. Everywhere they cross is the problem. Eliminate one, you eliminate the other - digital or analog. You can do it but the track will be in tatters. Once the bleed is recorded, thats it - no do overs.
hmm, never said I was pissed off. You would either have to be very immature and an idiot to be pissed off at someone's name or be very immature and an idiot to think someone would be pissed off at someone's name. See what I did there. Just find it curious that a guy who posts tons of Sabbath videos uses that name.
Bill Ward is the best. Skipped Sabbath tour because no Bill Ward. I'm not going to pay to hear Ozzy on an autotuner or a mediocre show drummer playing what Bill wrote.
Bill Ward is great ... one of the most underrated drummers. He nails it.
Bill rules!
But I'll die happy... I see Bill Ward with Sabbath in 1994 tour, Sao Paolo, Brazil. Tony Martin on vocals, Tony and Geezer...
black sabbath with tony martin= not black sabbath
I skipped the last 2 tours here in New Zealand due to no Bill. No Bill, no point.
I understand, but tommy cafulous is no punk.
The KING of laying back and playing slightly behind the beat. Ward's the man.
I met him 1995. Nicest guy on Earth.

It's so cool that three of the most defining drummers of this era were Cozy Powell, John Bonham and Bill Ward and they were all actually really good friend with one another!!
All from the same place as well
Don’t forget Keith Moon!!!
Ian Paice too!
I would rather here the little shifts in timing and minute mistakes that only drummers would catch. This creation even with it's flaws is much more worthy of respect than the machines and sampling they try to pass off as musical art today...
Love it. His playing breathes. It’s alive.
Same!
100% agreed
It's just a bit of bleed. If the band tracks live in the same room, that's what happens, smarty pants.
I could listen to this all day. Thank you, Sweet Leaf.
The man had a great right foot, didn't he?
Jedi - bonzo , Sith- Wardo. Welcome to the dark side! I Love it here! Bass kick drum is on fire!

Bill Ward, I just love the way you play drums. Respect to you man. cheers
i was his drum tech from '70-'89
tom dick tell us some Bill ward stories
Yes please!
tom dick Jesus Christ your are the luckiest man in the world
don't leave us in suspense, tell us more!
Yeah Yeah sure
What a beautiful mess. Bill Ward and Philthy Animal Taylor are my favorite rock drummers.
This is the man I learned from. Incredibly underrated.
it's impossible. back in the day, the bands recorded live. this means that drums microphones capture a little of other instruments sound.
Mostly the backing tracks were done live.
ozzy isn't singing the vocal take here that went on the album
I was privileged to have seen Black Sabbath in Portland, Oregon in 1999 with Pantera and incubus as opening acts. Everyone went outside on the smoking porch when Incubus played LOL
I'm a little spooked by Bill staring straight at me but this track is very handy for my guitar practice.
Why? You afraid Bills going to hand you a Drink and a line of coke? 😂
I love the sound of his dry kit. And his attack says "style" and "groove." There's a lot there to enjoy
omg his time is so good. when he slows down, the universe bends to his will.

+nolanstolz I think it is just a touch of reverb kicking in later...but you could be right

Goes to show how hard he was hitting that muffling would fall off / loosen in 5 minutes
I like that you hear leakage. Ah.. its a live recording from the 70's that is pretty cool.
Bill Ward is one of the best ever, this is perfect. Too badge won't be on the tour.
I love the beast! What a great drummer.
the song makes me wanna travel to the 70s and smoke some goodies with buddies in the basement
Thank you sweet baby jesus I was just looking for this.
This is a real service to drummers, thanks! I love doing about any cover (within my sad abilities) when I can hear the drums nice and clean like that.
Bill MIGHTY Ward
Bill ward is so underrated

the back noise is the best
Buddy Rich played great drums for Sabbath....
That was Gene Krupa
Technically and aesthetically PERFECT
Genio
It's like a seductive sound Bill Ward never does too much just what's needed

Wow, never knew he played so much kicks in this song. It's not audible in the mix. I wonder why only some of MOR tracks are available.

Mr. William Thomas Ward 🎵🎼🎶💪😎👊
If one can hear it.... True-ly a Master. I don't know about anybody else here... But I bow the fuck down.
How did you isolate the drums from the other Instruments?
Since the song fades out in the album I was wondering how they are gonna finish it.
This shit is dope, stop complaining everybody!!
looking for one of these for supernaut
in my opinion he is the second best drummer next to bonham, so creative! mitch mitchel is up there also
I'd say 3rd. Bonham, Peart and Ward
For me it’s Ward, Paice, Bonham in that order
Does anyone know WHY Bill opted out of the last Sabbath tours?
Tell that to the engineers who worked on the album then.
I just realized the appeal of having long beautiful hair as a male musician.......women tend to marvel at beautiful hair.

No, single pedal kick.
