Walking

- Animator Ryan Larkin uses an artist's sensibility to illustrate the way people walk. He employs a variety of techniques--line drawing, colour wash, etc.--to catch and reproduce the motion of people afoot. The springing gait of youth, the mincing step of the high-heeled female, the doddering amble of the elderly--all are registered with humour and individuality, to the accompaniment of special sound. Without words.
For ages 12 - 14
Directed by Ryan Larkin - 1968 | 5 min

this really is what it means to be an ‘artist’. to take something that passes as simple to an ordinary individual’s eye and turn it into a living, profound thing. always an astonishing experience
This man is the reason I've started animation
I'm not an animator, but I love the art. All this started because there was a lunch time short tv show, right before the midday news, that showed work done by the NFB - in the late 70s and early 80s, in Brazil. Later on there was "The Magic Lantern" on Brazil's PBS like channel, TV Cultura - also filled with NFB sponsored work!
I noticed your comment is now a few years old. How's it going? Arty animation is a difficult thing to do for a living, and almost impossible where I'm at in the U.S... but it still has so much potential for amazingness! I hope you're still at it, in whichever capacity fits your work week or free time.

houselab Jheez it’s weird looking back at these comments. I made animations all thru high school but I’m now a sophomore in college pursuing a teaching degree and don’t save much spare time for it anymore sadly.
@@joshyuzik6698 Returning to the artful skills I learned in high school is some of the most rewarding work I've ever done. Once you know how to animate you can do it again whenever - even a decade or three from now.
houselab very true my man :)
Mr Larkin was a brilliant artist who fell on hard times later in life. I’d see him in front of Schwartz’s smoked meat restaurant on St Lawrence Blvd in Montreal often trying to make a living. Rest In Peace.
I wish I knew who he was when I lived in MTL in 2001-2004. I was always hanging out on St-Laurent and of course having the occasional smoked-meat sandwich at Schwartz's.
Rest in piece Ryan. Your magnificent creations has inspired generations of artists to animate and much more.
It's interesting how he takes something we do everyday, just walking, and makes it beautiful
It is weird and dark and I do not like it at all.
@@markdemell3717 How the fuck is it dark?????
@@markdemell3717 dude shut up and appreciate art not everything has some deep inherent dark meaning
@@jamesstewart6042 Have a nice day.
The perfect animated short. Saw it first nearly fifty years ago. Just as salient today!
I cannot praise him enough for his animation, but for me the most important was how influential this was on my taste in music. It seems these days like all the music I listen to can be framed in terms of how much it reminds me of "Walking".
Would be a pleasure to share my playlists with yours
@@matthiasbierent1523 If you have a playlist with music like this, please share! Been looking for something of this quality.
@@matthiasbierent1523 Please, share. I´ve been lookingo for something like this too.
this makes me cry every time
Great work by Ryan Larkin (RIP).
So beautiful. He locks in the ground plane without bothering to show it. Absolute mastery. I saw it when it came out and it still holds up so well.
I never get tired of watching this.
Ryan is a legend.
It's still mind boggling that he animated this! The walking cycles are too perfect
a true gem
It's so beautiful! I'm surprised how walking may be awesome!
Such a great piece! Sad what happened to the poor guy..
+MrFricoco I know, he was really creative and bright. :)
Fantastic old school
Beautiful.
inspiring! i'm going for a walk...
the four people who have disliked this video are the reason for me to have absolutely no hope in humanity
+Esteban Congote
It might not hurt to scale back that assessment to: "the four people who have disliked this video are reason for me to have absolutely nothing to do with *them*."
PHENOMENAL!
The music is super cool
This is so cool
WOW, this was amazing!!!
Absolutely brilliant in every way. NFB always was way ahead of it's time. And to think such incredible art such as this was just squeezed in between cartoons and Saturday morning shows as a kid for me in the 70s and 80s. I was always mesmerized and curious about shorts like "Dance" and "Faces" and the wildlife shorts, but the quality could only truly be appreciated later in life.
Thank you so, so, so, so much
Good animation! Walking is the best part of exercise!!!😌❤👍
A goth that encourages fitness ??..... these really are strange days 🤪

Good animation
Good? The man did all of this by himself, hand drawing and coloring every frame. If this is your idea of good, what is your idea of fucking amazing???
@@geoffreylogsdon162 just back off ok its amazing 🎉 congratulations it’s great 👍 fucking Animation alight back off
RIP
I laughed out loud at the comical way the camera pauses on the tiptoe-woman's breasts before panning up to her head.
1:25 to 2:20 Who is those characters?
