- One of my favorite horror movies of the year, but at the same one probably the hardest to review or "sell" to potential viewers. But hey, gotta at least try, right? let's take a look at The Blackcoat's Daughter.

Can I say, THANK YOU for posting more frequently. Love your reviews!! Made this spooky month great!!
THANK YOU!! I Love this movie as well and hear so little about it. To me it's definatley underrated! , And I agree with your tastes in movies , like it Follows and the Babadook etc. Love your videos and your channel ♥
This movie was so atmospherically effective, I took a 6-month break from stopping the movie to continuing it. I'm not sure I would say I loved it, but was it creepy as hell? Without a doubt.
I honestly love this movie..it just has a unique feel to it
Please check out my two-part review video of The Blackcoat's Daughter (spoilers): czcams.com/video/x-fUMg3u5zc/video.html
I don’t know about this movie i just seeing the Director Mike Flanagan talking about it then i watch it I just waste my time shit more
SOUNDS MEH-VELLOUS!!!!!!
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
I wouldn’t expect dumb people to like this movie.
Totally feel you on this one. It's a simple story with a simple visual style, but it still manages to be SUPER eerie and sinister. It's simultaneously very realist and very poetic. For a story so close to religious themes, I was impressed with how understated they are.
Great stuff. You should do one of Childhood trauma videos talking about the tv shows and movies that scared you as a kid that everyone's doing rn🔥
The quiet, winter atmosphere reminded me of the shining which i loved. This was a daaaaaark movie and i wiah more people i know would have seen or heard of it.
I remember watching this film and finding it to be rather vague and dreamlike as well as slow and a bit dreary: a 'meh'/forgettable 4/10.
BUT(!) once it had finished, I kept thinking about it and it haunted me. So I thought it would give it another go...and another and another (ad nauseam).
I'm now hopelessly obsessed & think it's stunning!
PS.
Kiernan Shipka is a revelation- she conveys so much through her expressions, she's extremely charismatic/enigmatic.
This film haunted me for days afterwards- I loved it (despite finding it dull to begin with, I'm glad I persevered!)
Kiernan Shipka's performance was brilliant.
This movie surprised me. It was a slow burn, but so engaging and really unnerving at times. Underrated despite being well created. Had no idea the direction was the son of Norman Bates!
It's like you literally summarized my thoughts on this one. I absolutely loved this movie. It was my number one horror movie this year, but it feels incredibly hard to recommend to people. Amazing film, and great review.
Awesome movie, one of the best in this generation, by the way have you seen Bone Tomahawk?
I learned about Bone Tomahawk from this channel! It was in one of those best horrors of the year videos (2015?).
I love this man
Thanks for all the recommendations this Oct.!! Hope you continue the other section 3 Video Nasties vids!
Took the words right out of my mouth. I genuinely liked this movie, last scene showing the aftermath of her actions had me thinking a bit as to what exactly happened but I found out. Glad you reviewed this movie.
Love this film and I'm glad to hear you share the same enthusiasm for it. Underrated as hell.
There were quite a few scenes that stayed with me after I saw this movie! Great one...thanks for reviewing!!! I love how your hoodie matches the beer lol!
Man thank you for these Halloween vids. Keep the vids coming after October ends tho 😭😭😭 best reviewer on youtube despite English not even being your first language. 🤘🏼👏🏼💯🔥
You Are A Dutch National Treasure! Love Your Channel! Been Showing It To All My Friends. Your Awesome !
Happy Halloween! This is one I’m definitely going to check out
Thanks a lot for introducing me to this film.
Great review man! I really loved this movie also. I hope you had a great Halloween.
Omg thanks man! When you said viewers should go in blind I was like, "Aight, this guy knows what's up." So I watched the movie. After the movie I finished watching this video. I've been digging all your film recommendations for years now. Thanks for all the great videos man! You've really helped me gain a new appreciation for film.
Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween Gangsters
Hell yes.
Happy Halloween gangster
I heard of this "so bad it's good" movie named "Hausu" it's japanese so it's going to be a treat
It's not a "so bad it's good" movie - it's actually an amazing Japanese art house movie that I completely dig. It's not a film that tries to be a frightening horror throw down; it's trying to be a twisted and crazy funhouse ride, and that's exactly what it comes off as. Imagine a weird carnival haunted house ride as a film - that's House.
I love House and watch it periodically because it's just fun as hell and makes me smile through half of it. And I'm almost sure Sam Raimi saw this film before he made The Evil Dead because of some of the elements in that film.
Anyway, a total masterpiece. Check it out.
Damn, I'm intrigued! Gonna check this one out!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN BABY!!!
Happy Halloween dude
cool vid man!
Twin Peaks reference!! Hell yeah!!
Loved this one!
you know that when the matching beer/sweater combo comes out its gonna be a recommended movie. also, this one is going right in the watchlist
The atmosphere of the film helped support the slow tone. It was all fast and loud music with bright and flashy images that kinda killed it in the Neon Demon.
I've got good news for you: I watched the spoiler section and I still don't understand what it's about.
Of course now that you mentioned Twin Peaks: the Return, I'm going to be all over you to review that. And yes, I do know how hard that will be. Episode 8 alone is worth a 2 hour video discussion.
Every time I watch you, I remember you saying in a facts video about yourself that when you first talked to your girlfriend she thought that you wanted to sell her. Kills me every time. Lololol.
happy Halloween :)
I totally agree. I was holding off on this movie because I heard mixed reviews. When I finally watched it I was blown away. I love the slow burn, isolation feel of this movie! I borrowed it too a few friends, and they didn’t like it. This is one of the better horror movies I’ve seen in a while!
I only just started watching your videos (googling "Oxen Split Torturing" brought me here to your "Most Disturbing Movies Ever" channel) and I'm glad you really liked this movie since so many seem to dislike it - usually those who don't understand it, haha - but it's an excellent, unusual horror film. Now I can respect you because you liked a movie I liked. lol.
Loved this series! You see Brawl in Cell Block 99? It's a grindhouse/exploitation style movie by the guy that did Bone Tomahawk, staring Vince Vaughn. I think you'd like it.
Check out Colossal and Better Watch Out. I'd go in as blind as possible for both.
Love the reviews!
I'm glad to hear about it, I didn't like MA either, but I was very much for 'Mandy', so you know THOSE TYPES. I'll probably find it on Netflix one day, thanks as always.
This film is so nice! This film has such a dark and develish atmosphere love it!
Are u gonna do a part two to Section 3 video nsaties?
This movie was produced and directed by Oz Perkins, Anthony Perkins son. It is also on Netflix.
Eu amo esse filme!
I think would like you to see Channel Zero on Syfy because really good and really better then America Horror Story but don't know if u get it at the Netherlands but the 1st season is on DVD & Blu-Ray so check it out.
your sweater matches your drink so much swag haha :)
You said you didn't ge the title. I don't either yet. But, I just started watching the film and at the beginning she is walking beside her father, face not shown, who is wearing a "black coat."
Blackcoat is an old term to describe someone in a religious order or a priest - so, like the film itself, you can interpret that title to mean several things. I found it interesting that James Remar's character in the diner scene with Emma Robert's character is wearing a dark shirt with a bit of white collar showing through - it looked very priest-like, which offers an interesting interpretation to the title. I'm almost sure that shirt combination/wardrobe choice was not accidental by the director.
Could you check out “They Look Like People” (2015) or “Killer Joe” (2011)? They’re pretty well made and disturbing horror/thriller type films and I would love to see a review of them.
Excellent film!!!!
Have you covered it comes a night? I found the movie intriguing and quite amazing and I'd love to see your input!!
Hawks Art he reviewed it :)
i just watched this :o going in blind is the way to watch this one in my opinion, i think if i knew about this film it would of dragged way too much.
Katherine's performance was amazing too she kept me interested in the more, 'slower' parts
This series was awesome! I have lots of new movies to watch :)
My favorite horror movie in many years.
Interesting note: Kathrine went on to be Sabrina in the new Netflix series.
Dear horrble review, Can you do an the most distbuing songs ever made video?
Totally agree. Go into it blind. All you have to know is, it's creepy and cold. If you like creepy and hate jump scare type movies, watch it!
Just watched this. Excellent movie
After hearing your thoughts on this movie (minus the spoiler section because I am curious about the movie) I'd like to know if you've watched I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. It's from the same director. I watched it twice and found it slow, boring, and very uninteresting. The reviews on Netflix seem divided between "This movie is genius!" and "This movie sucks!" with very few in between. Anyway, I'm curious to know what your thoughts on the movie would be.
I liked it overall, but not anywhere near as much as The Blackcoat's Daughter. I liked that it does a good job of sustaining a sense of unease just like the Blackcoat's daughter did, but unfortunately in Pretty Thing the characters and the story overall weren't nearly as engaging. I have to admit I didn't like the casting either. For whatever reason I just don't like Ruth Wilson - she just gets on my nerves for no particular reason.
Anyway, I don't have a desire to see Pretty Thing again, but The Blackcoat's Daughter I know I will watch a lot.
Definitely my favorite horror movie of the year - actually one of my favorite films of the year period. A total masterpiece and the best film of its specific type (can't say what type - don't want to spoil it here) in decades in IMO.
Anyway, if you love film and aren't the type of fan that thinks a good horror movie means shitty cardboard characters getting killed by some psycho de jour and lame ass jump scares, but rather prefers something just loaded with atmosphere and dread - and that offers you a true interactive movie-going experience in terms of putting things together and not being spoon fed - then this film is definitely for you.
S'up, gangster :) made it to 1:40 and will come back after I watch the movie. Thanks for the heads up!
You should review The Silenced , very good Korean horror movie !!
CAN YOU REVIEW DAGON PLEASE
The Experiment. Such a good movie
the original German one or the US remake?
Hi have you seen the American ginniey pig films? They look interesting if you want something different
Spoiler warning:
To me the most amazing thing about this movie was that while the plot was simple, the story itself was not. And I don't mean that the story wasn't simple just because it was told in a non-linear fashion. What I mean is that there are several ways to approach the story. For example:
1) Was Kat really possessed or was she having a mental breakdown? There are several scenes which indicate that some kind of supernatural presence has insinuated itself into her life (she sees a horned silhouette, receives eerie phone calls), but every one of the scenes are only from her perspective, never any of the other characters. Some people say that when she levitates during the exorcism, that is proof that she had a demon in her. Again, though, we're only seeing this scene through the camera lens, with no other characters in the shot, and we're also only seeing the upper part of her body lift from the bed, and then only briefly. Of course, you can throw everything I just said to the wind and still look at it and say that yes, beyond a shadow of a doubt, she had been possessed by Satan, and that would be an equally valid viewpoint.
2) This movie raises some interesting questions about the existence/nature of God. When Rose's father, Bill, asks "Joan" if she believes in God, she says that she doesn't, and his response to that is to tell her that he does, because he finds God - not in the Bible or churches - but rather in the coincidences of life. And then he tells her that running into her is an example of that, and so when he looks at her, he sees God. But then of course, this is the same woman who murdered his daughter, and would eventually murder him and his wife, as well. So either God doesn't exist and Bill is just imagining that he sees Him in Joan, or it turns out that God WAS in Joan. And if the latter is true, that makes God a fairly cruel being, to make these parents suffer the exact same fate as their daughter, almost 9 years to the day of her murder, and essentially in the same spot. It's a bleak outlook (even more so if it turns out that Kat really had been possessed), but I believe that's what the filmmakers intended.
Anyway, just my two cents.
Time-Traveling Homicidal maniacs---What a concept =))
you had me at emma roberts
Loved this movie
The movie seems promising I enjoy the lurking mysteries in psychological horror movies like Julia's Eyes a Spanish film directed by Guillermo del Toro the suspenseful journey to the end is what keeps the viewer entertained
He y you should review Twin Peaks!
niceeeeeeeeeee video
Hey: do 'Creep 2' !
have you seen geralds game
lit
I just watched this one. Personally, I loved the idea of the story, I just wasn't fond of the execution. In my opinion, it needed more dialogue. I also didn't like the back and forth of the stories. There just wasn't much cohesion. Finally, I hated the idea of using 2 different actresses for one part, especially since they look nothing alike. It just wasn't realistic. I didn't mind the slow burn at all though. I liked the performances and I loved the story. I just wish it had better direction.
Do a review on the Hostel movies!!
he already did. He made a review on the hotel trilogy about 2 years back.
Lucas Cannon thank you ^~^
Hostel sucks
so you watched a movie in which the only monster in the film is black and stands in shadows and is hinted at being the devil and you don't know what the title means?
What kind of 🍺 you drinking there, gangsta??
review Super Dark Times
It was a decent movie but I felt that it was very lacking in the story department. Without much of a plot I really can't get into a movie.
"pretty beautiful" - showing image of pretty girl...well, gotta agree there xD
joking, will check out this movie, since you recommend it :)
It took me quite some time to realize this wasn't another video nasty. Got weirdly excited seeing schoolgirls in some exploitation flick
Marc Ritz perverted Marc
Those were not minor spoilers man
Definitely my favorite movie this year was Raw. Even with the “twist” at the very end that movie still stuck with me for a long time after.
What's up gangsters :)
God bless all the beautiful women in this movie.
I would very much like to buy this dude beers, if there is anyway I could achieve this I would be very appreciative of being advised. Also, I want to get pissed and lick his face.
Let's start with the beer maybe haha... Although what I'm drinking in this and the other "The Horrors of 2017" videos really isn't anything special, it's basically just the store brand pilsener from the biggest grocery store franchise here in The Netherlands. It's not bad! But also nothing special.
I could maybe mail you some beers, how do you feel about English beer? Leave the face licking to one side for now.
More video nasties please sir
i hope you dont go into a hiatus now also review more Distubring or seemingly distubring movies cuz i know there is a few left and then after that you can leave that series on the back burner for a while and review well whatever tha fuck you want But stick to horror/drama movies cuz most of the fans are horror freaks and sick fucks like me haha
HATED THIS ONE SO MUCH!!!!
Again :=), you've missed 'it stains the sands red' :)
I love you 😍
I gave it a watch when you recommended watching it blind. It was included in Amazon Prime, so I figured, "Why not?"
Sorry, man, I didn't like it that much. I like eerie atmospheres and I appreciate the movie emphasizing the atmosphere over any jumpscares (there is really only one in the movie). That being said, it felt a little bit scattered at times, especially with Kat. It felt like they were trying to make her a sympathetic character, but regardless of whether or not the exorcism succeeded, she does some pretty horrible things so I can't feel sorry for her.
It just felt like the movie didn't really know how to handle certain characters or plot advancement very well, which is a bummer.
