  • From April 2022, take several rides across all lines of the WMATA Metrorail system in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. At the time, the 7000-series Kawasaki cars had been pulled from service due to derailment concerns and thus all trains were made up of 2000-Series and 3000-Series cars from Breda, as well as 6000-Series cars from Alstom. Headways were scheduled at 10 minutes on the Red Line and 20 minutes on all other lines, however enough of the 6000-Series fleet had been returned to service in April 2022, allowing for an increased level of service to be provided versus what had been promised. This is evident throughout the video where headways better than 10 minutes can be seen displayed on platforms.
While it was complete, this video was recorded before the Silver Line extension to Dulles Airport and Ashburn, VA had been opened. Many of the signs throughout the system had been updated to reflect the extension, as it was believed the opening was imminent, but ultimately the extension would only open several months later.

I think I have some 5000 series videos to share from 2012 and 2015. They had great audio.

I kinda wish they had ordered a bigger amount of 6ks. This whole 7k issue is obviously one of the reasons why I say that since they came into service not very long before the 7ks did. Imagine having like 400 instead of 184 and while service would still have to be reduced, it wouldn’t have looked as bad. Like leave the red at 6 mins then maybe go from 12 to 15 mins on all the others instead of 20-30 mins and keep them as 8 cars like before the rail car shortage and only do 2k/3k 6 cars. Mix ups of 6 cars and 8 car help relieve flow and increase capacity and all. Of course all our hearts go out to these riders who’ve had to endure this and it’s unfortunate for everyone involved

    20 minutes is bad.

Agreed, thankfully there were a lot of unscheduled extra trains operating. Since the return of the 7000-Series, things on Metro have gotten considerably better, too.
