    My daughters gown, satin and lace, all lace appliques sewn on by hand, with glass beads also. Never by machine. 3 months of work to be worn for a few hours. It was worth it.

    Although not a traditional method of haute couture (haute couture is hand sewn) this was very interesting to watch! To do something by hand is labourous and expensive so why not succumb to a machine if it suits your methods.

    Wow!
    Miss Donna, thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge and honed skill. I learned a lot from your video, a lot of history, and also how to form a contour on lace to make it lie perfectly!
    I love lace and just recently applique-embellished a pair of red suede boots in an overlay fashion using a red silk lace, and needed to incorporate a trim-and-fit methodology, but had to glue it to the boots with a spray adhesive (unable to sew through the boot)! They turned out beautifully, and I was well paid for the job too.
    Thanks to you, I am now even further inspired to work with lace, I may try making a few garments of lace!
    Again, thank you ever so much for taking time to make and share this video!

      Odettesharesherheart sewing it by hand is the proper way to do it. Never, ever by machine. Also, use the tiniest of hand stitches possible. The way she did this is not Haute Couture, as 97% of Haute Couture is done by hand.

    The title is utterly misleading, as no lacemaking is done in this video. As a lacemaker myself, I felt cheated. All that is depicted is the sewing together of pieces of machine-made lace. The title should be "Sewing with Lace." If you want to see how lace is made, do a search for "bobbin lace" or "tatting," or perhaps "needle lace" (a style I have not yet studied and have not had occasion to research).

      @@louiselill1528 I’m very sorry for your loss, I’ll never get over loosing my Mum , I miss her every day. I always wanted to make bobbin lace , I put it off because I perceived it to be too complicated for me. I was very wrong. I am only just starting, but a simple straight line of lace can easily be accomplished. It gets more complicated with the larger patterns, but for now, I’m happy I’ve started ! Please give it a try if you still have your Mums lace making things.xx

    those who criticize this woman for machine sewing lace are absolutely wrong! You can sew lace by machine! With modern machines and new stabilizers more and more steps of haute couture lace is achievable. Hand made doesn't necessarily mean quality or durability. There still steps that need the human hand but less and less as we advance technically. Even lace materials and trimmings are advancing.

    Hi Donna. I was actually looking for a video how they make lace, since we use it a lot nowadays in decent clothes and sexy lingerie. But your video is more like a documentary about the history of the lace itself. Well even though i did not find what i was looking for. I thank you for this video, because i still learnt something i did not know.
    I hope though if you make another video (this time about how you make lace) you can narrate instead of writing. My reading is too slow and had to stop the video for each text :-)

    This is NOT Haute Couture. This would be done by hand so that the joins were invisible. The internet is awash with misleading videos of Haute Couture finishes that are nothing of the sort. Similarly, the world of high fashion is awash with people claiming to be making to the Couture standard when they are not anything of the sort. For true Couture look at the hand embellishment and finishing of eg Chanel Haute Couture - however skilled, capable or talented you are it just makes you marvel - another level altogether.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "haute couture" required to be made by hand, and some only consider it truly so if it was made in Paris? Also, there are specific methods that must be adhered to (even within handwork) in order for a garment or accessory to carry the moniker, I believe. While your history was interesting and your finished garment looked nice, the title of this is sadly misleading. I would pass out if that had been true haute couture lace that was being stabbed by machine so indelicately wherever the needle happened to fall. A true haute couturier works diligently, intentionally and skillfully to finesse the finished piece of art from the original materials.

  • @sixxmesixx
    @sixxmesixx Před 3 lety

    This is NOT handmade lace! This is some garbage lace that was made by a machine that anyone can buy on a roll. They then cut it into sections and pieced it together on a sewing machine! Everything is made by hand in haute couture; it literally translates to high dress maker aka high level sewing. The haute couture name can only apply to registered fashion houses in Paris. It began in the 19th century before sewing machines. Thus, sewing machines are not allowed period. This is one of the reasons why its so expensive. In keeping with that level of sewing all haute couture houses must be registered and approved by the governing body, Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. It is very difficult for houses to gain the haute couture title and to remain on the list. Handmade lace is not made on any type of machine that includes looms. Looms are massive machines that were invented to produce cheaper lace and put real lace makers out of business. Machine lace will never be the same quality as handmade. A haute couture garment made by loom lace would be a slap in the face to couturiers and the unknowing buyer.
