Whenever someone asks me about how the population of India is portrayed in the Western media, I always tell them that we are a very very very diverse nation formed by the rich of Europe, the middle class of North America and the poor of sub Saharan Africa (the Western news media channels only focus on the poor sadly and movies like Slumdog Millionaire show a biased picture as well; also, many of them look for this, I have had second hand experience with a news media house based in Europe who just wanted to shoot the Mumbai slums, nothing else for their TV show). There are people living in extreme poverty as well as in extreme riches and the class + caste angle is super complicated. Also, the religious divide in the nation has been more prominent with the advent of the current government. Many Indians do not like this book actually, they see the criticism to be very one sided (which might be true) but the criticism and the metaphor, although biased, cannot be unseen. This was one of my early contemporary reads and I fell in love with the book. Also, glad you spoke about the farmers protests. There have been various rounds of talks between the farmers and the government but they have still not reached an agreement for now. Meanwhile, the law enforcement has been curbing the voices of the people who dissent which is the worst part of all. We're hoping things get back to normal in Delhi soon because that's were the protests are happening, but iy does not seem likely.

I feel we need a video from yourself about all of this. The more I learn about India and how I try to understand, the more I realise I know nothing 😂 that’s part of the journey though and keeps piquing my interests.

@@KDbooks You've got to visit India to understand the pandemonium tbh 😋
William Dalrymple is a Scottish author/historian/former journalist (I think) who has been living in Delhi with his family since a very long time now. He has written certain books on India and our history. Be sure to check it out 🙌

I am SO glad you read this! I was just complaining in a recent tag video about how BookTube is sleeping on Aravind Adiga. Glad to hear that you mostly liked it overall. I want to reread it before I watch the Netflix movie.
Didn't know anything about the farmers' protests, so thanks for the discussion about that.

@@KDbooks Honestly, White Tiger is his best novel. I did think his most recent book Amnesty was quite good, though.

Look, your Indian friends tried their best to save you but you wouldn't let it go. ...j/k I really liked this book when I first read it and my problems with it aren't the same as the usual Indian reader issues - I just have issues with the language and the prose as I mention in my own review. However, it was such a fresh voice when it came out, and books have to be read within their context which means I'll always have a soft spot for this book. As an Indian I have issues with the resolution of this story because I feel like Adiga is saying that in New India wealth can overcome caste - and maybe that was what it looked like when he wrote it, but 15 years on, I can tell you with absolute certainty that that is not true.
