  • I have actually made a video about this style of case before. This is a remake of a video and is also about remaking a case just like one I made about 10 years ago.

    Very nice video. Thank you. Try using a propane BBQ lighter to singe the thread ends after trimming. Saves the fingers.

      I have used those too. I also know a leather crafter that has a soldering iron on his bench to finish threads. One of those gun type ones that heat up in just a few seconds

    That's pretty awesome. I don't know that I would use one personally, but I was thinking about making one for my dad and father in law. For Christmas or something. Just curious though, how do you price something like this? I personally love leather, but no way i could make one and be competitively priced with the plastic crap they sell everywhere.....I'm still way too slow lol. I do have a guy asking me to make him a knife sheath and I've thought about taking it on when work slows down, but I wouldn't know how to price that either.

      Prices are always a challenge. I try to charge at least two to three times the approximate cost of materials. You can also go with cost of materials plus what you want to charge for your time. I don't always get enough for the time involved before I start to think the price is unreasonable. If the job is not difficult then I just charge the reasonable price. If it is something that is a pain, or is a job I just don't want to do I will quote the price figured on cost per hour. Sometimes I have been paid almost twice what I felt was a reasonable price because I quoted a really high price for a job I didn't want to do. That way at least I have some motivation to do it.

      Lol i worked for a guy who would do that. If he didn't want a job he'd overprice it. If they accepted the offer,,,let's go make money. They sucky part is, I was a flat rate no matter how much the company made. Thank you for the reply. I really do appreciate it.

    May I ask what the cutting to is? I'm getting into it and I'm making one for a break cinch on a saddle. Any tips?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  Před 2 lety

      Not sure what you mean by "cutting to". If you are asking about the shape of the leather before it gets cased over the block, it is intentionally left oversized to be trimmed after it is shaped. Start with the shape of the part of the block you want to cover. Then around three edges add the thickness of the block, the thickness of the leather, and about 3/4 of an inch extra.

    Have a question , where do you get the money clip with the hole in it? I have searched all over the place for them.

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  Před 8 měsíci

      I mostly buy them from Tandy leather. You should be able to find them from other leather craft suppliers and Amazon. They are usually called "belt holster spring clips"

    Is there a reason why you use a leather pattern, and not make a wood pattern. Asking from a newbie to the leather world.

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  Před 2 lety +1

      Mostly just because I have a box of leather scraps right here, and making a wooden piece would take longer for me to do. I have used wooden and plastic pieces to shape cases. Steel pieces will need to be wrapped in plastic to avoid leaving black stains in the leather.
