    I’m sorry if you are repeating information but I wondered which reliable long range weather website you use. It looks really easy to understand and growing is all about the conditions.

    How wonderful to have such a big bed just for carrots. My history of germinating them has been dire but this year I stsrted in tubs in the polytunnel, with cardboard on top . Pretty good success and today I am doing another 4 tubs. Not sure about sitting them indoors for long though.

      Tubs are great if you struggle otherwise Lynn, after last years slug problems I'm doing a few extra tubs in June as a hedge, slugs aren't much of an issue for cooking carrots, but for salads I like them to look perfect : All the best - Steve

      @@SteveRichards so, can I sow all through June? I know carrots are cheap to but but not organic ones and we probably get through 20 a week at least for all sorts including all soups, stews, lasagna, shephards pie, oh gosh...most meals. So, buying 20 to 30 organic carrots each week could be £4 to £6 and that makes them look more on the luxury side doesn't it?

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem +1

      @lynnpurfield9430 I’ve no idea about the price, I’ve only bought carrots once in the last 7 years and I eat them every day. Yes, you can sow them into early July, but the later you going the smaller they will be of course

    Thanks for the video Steve, and perfect timing as I’m sowing mine too. How late is too late for a winter sowing, in your opinion? I’m sowing pelleted Dolciva carrots and they are germinating brilliantly. I’m also trying non-pelleted Bolero so will see how they do. Both are supposed to be good storage varieties.

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem +1

      I'd not want to wait much longer than mid June Sam, you can sow carrots in July without a problem and they will be lovely going into winter, but they will probably be a bit small to hold well into spring : All the best - Steve

    I haven’t tried pelleted carrot seed, though I love pelleted lettuce seed. I never have any trouble germinating carrots but I despise thinning them and the pelleted seed could be a solution.

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem

      if you get fresh seed and they germinate well then it's very convenient, but pelleted seed doesn't last long so once I open a packet I share the spares with my neighbours : All the best - Steve

    Hi Steve! I was wondering why you cut the tops off those carrots in the beginning? Did you cut them only to interplant with other stuff? Will the carrots over winter like this? Thanks for all your tips!

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem +3

      Yes, it’s all explained in the chapter on growing carrots that’s linked in the description. As I said in the video I cut the tops off in November, this reduces slugs, makes space for lettuces between the carrots, allows the carrots to be covered to prevent freezing. The carrots are perfectly happy, they regrow their tops enough to keep them very fresh tasting

      Yes, they are ready for harvest in November, ideally after the first frost and we finished harvesting them in late April. You can probably pick them well before November, but we pick from our autumn bed until then

      @Gary-so5un I don’t know about the pellets, they are just the organic ones, I bought my bottle years ago and haven’t run out yet. I don’t buy organic seeds, not sure what the coating is, some sort of mineral powder

    I use Mercurio from the same company. I have to say I plant my drills 6 inches apart. I do not understand why you inter-plant when another row can be installed but each to their own. I find pelleted seed brilliant in cutting down the work. I also find germination is about 85%....easy to drop in another seed in the gaps. A shout for "Moles Seeds" perhaps.

      @AliCousins-uu8xm that’s doesn’t work for me, then get more carrots than I need and loose out on ten rows of lettuce in spring, which I do need. Carrots being a much lower value crop than lettuce too

    • @AliCousins-uu8xm
      @AliCousins-uu8xm Před měsícem

      @@SteveRichards Steve you lose nothing. If the carrots are 6 inches apart you only use half the bed. What you plant in the other half is up to you. If you plant lettuce they will be done and gone allowing a third crop in the lettuce area while the carrot is still growing to maturity.

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem

      I’m sorry but I’m totally confused, do you for some reason think I’m planting 12” between rows and planting lettuce at the same time as the carrots??
