    Just purchased the Velocity One Flightstick the other day after watching your videos on it. It works beautifully with MSFS2020 on the Xbox and screams quality which is remarkable for the price point. It such a sturdy product - no regrets! I’ve not been brave enough to do the firmware upgrade yet lol. Thanks for a great video on this.

    Turtle beach though out nearly everything besides the stability which I had to makeshift a lap base for. Only other thing is the stick twist is less confident than the HOTAS, Would be great to have rudder pedals with it, but those are much more expensive than the stick itself and I just cant justify it. The build quality and features make the HOTAS feel like a Fisher Price toy.

    The problem I always had with the TM hotas one was the throttle was not ambidextrious, meaning if you did want to separate them and place the throttle on the right side of the joystick, you couldn’t use it effectively because the shape of it only fits your left hand. There are some aircraft that have the throttle to the right side of the stick, such as the Diamond DA62 and soon to be released Cirrus SF-50 Vision Jet. I am hoping TB will release a separate velocityone throttle that you can place on either side of the flightstick and use with either hand.

    The Trustmaster works with conventional potentiometers (which wear and clog). The Turtle works with modern magnetic sensors, which is a big step forward. Its trim wheel is also a big asset, I totally agree with you ...

    CONCERNING THRUSTMASTER LOOSE THROTTLE: When I first got a Thrustmaster I read about the Velcro but after trying two brands couldn't find any Velcro tabs that were the right thickness, and it wasn't working. So you can try the Velcro thing, which obviously works if you have the right size, or....
    What I did was use heavy duty duct tape (I used Gorilla). 'Not' the regular thin duct tape that can turn to goop over time. Then I just made some little squares and that worked beautifully for me.. I actually have two little pieces on either side of the throttle shaft, and they're stacked, but they slightly taper... For instance, pull the throttle stick all the way back, make a little square that fits comfortably within that gap on the base of the shaft, but then make one about 1/3-1/2 the length... Put the smaller piece down first, then the longer piece on top.. Now this provides good tension for the throttle (ans remains where you park it) in addition to providing a gradient in tension.
    __--T--__
    Imagine it like that, where the hyphen represent where the tape is double stacked. Now when you're pulling it to full throttle or fully cut, the tension increases slightly as you reach the extremes, which lets you feel where you are on the throttle without having to look down at it.
    PS - Don't worry about the tape leaving residue. As long as you're using something like Gorilla or T-Rex brand heavy duty duct tape, it'll be fine. It's the regular duct tape that can leave a mess.. I've left little patches of heavy duty tape on my throttle for months, and then swapped it out for fresh tape and adhesive residue was not an issue (still looked brand new when old tape was peeled away).
    * Remember, if you want the taper, put that smaller strip down first, then the longer one. That way it glides as it's passing into and out of the base and not catching.

    Useful comparison, glad I waited for the Velocity One stick. Agree with you, the stick oozes quality, the trim wheel is excellent and make it more like a real aircraft where you have to trim as you change your aircraft’s attitude. @danlance Před rokem +2

    Hi Huddison,
    Thanks for the video - even if watching your videos can turn out to be an expensive experience for me!
    First of all - and I may being pedantic here... but only one of these is a HOTAS - Hands On Throttle And Stick... the other is a flight stick with integrated throttle.
    As you say, for civilian aircraft control, the throttle is not altered substantially during the flight apart from when changing between phases of the flight - so the benefits of a true HOTAS setup are somewhat limited.
    If you also play other games controlling a flying vessel, particularly space based games such as Elite Dangerous where simultaneous control over all 6 axes / 12 directions of movement (XYZ thrust and rotation) - which is really only the case within space - then a HOTAS system is much more beneficial.
    I have used the T Flight HOTAS for many years - and have flown with many other pilots who also use this device on the XBox in Elite Dangerous - and can give the following feedback:
    - The build quality is atrocious - most people using this device have had to either replace it (multiple times in some cases) or take it apart and clean contacts / re-solder connections which have come loose. Admittedly space combat in ED provides much more stress on the device compared to the minimal and controlled input required for atmospheric flight in FS2020 - but even so, this device is built to a price - and then sold at double that due to the Xbox license (see comparative costs of otherwise identical HOTAS 4 for PC.) - and many users have experienced significant drift, especially in the rudder axis.
    Personally I have had to resolder the throttle once, repair the USB cable twice, and have to have a substantial dead zone on the rudder axis - and even then the movement of the rudder axis is 'spiky' - I really need to take that apart and resolder, but that is much harder to access than the throttle due to the potentiometer being within the handle...
    - The ability to be able to separate throttle and stick... does not provide enough separation for a natural cockpit positioning with the seat between the 2 devices. It's frustratingly close to being enough... but not quite.
    - All cables - connection to xbox via DIN like adapter to USB A, and connection between throttle and stick, are captive. Damage any cables, and you'll need to be handy with the soldering iron (or self soldering heat activated connectors). If you want to separate the throttle and stick more for a cockpit like seating position, then that will require cutting the connecting cable and then splicing in a connecting cable (there are 16 wires running between the 2 devices, which allows for the use of self splicing ethernet sockets and 2 ethernet cables if anyone is interested... something which I did to mine to allow it to be used in a more ergonomic position...)
    - Ergonomics... be really careful with these if you suffer from RSI. All the surfaces are hard plastic, and I know many people who have experienced significant pain from repetitive use for longer periods gripping the handles. Again - probably not as severe an issue for FS as it is for ED, due to the more set and forget nature of most stages of a flight. This is probably something to be more careful with for Helicopter control, which is much more "hands on"
    All in all, even at the relatively low price point which the HOTAS1 is available at... it does not feel great value. The Velocity One Yoke (which @Huddison told me I had to buy ;-) despite costing me over 4 times what I paid for the HOTAS1, feels much better value, if you can afford it. I cannot speak for the Velocity One Flight Stick - as I currently cannot justify buying in addition to the V1 Yoke when I already own the H1 - but I suspect it will be similar story there (I'll leave it to @Huddison's ongoing reports on that...)
    I would not recommend anyone purchase the H1 for use in FS2020 unless that is literally all you can afford (and even then I would suggest you may be better waiting) due to the poor build quality, poor ergonomics, and frequent reliability issues which are encountered by the majority of serious users.

    • @Huddison
      @Huddison  Před rokem +1

      You do may some good points there, particularly about cables being captive.
      Although I must add that I have owned my Hotas 4 for over five years and it still operates as though new. Granted, I don't use it daily (rarely at all nowadays), but for a low cost Hotas, it has served me well.

    • @danlance
      @danlance Před rokem +1

      @@Huddison
      I suppose that really is the long and short of it...
      How much are you going to use it...
      At its current discounted price of £59... that's the same price as standard X-Box game, and not much more than a standard Xbox controller... if you get at least a year of use out of it before it is unusable (worst case scenario, with standard UK warranty)... then it is a low cost of entry.
      If you are going to use it extensively and hard (as admittedly I and many of my gaming contacts did) - then I think you will be frustrated with it - as indeed I was.
      If you are going to use it a few times per month... then unless you are one of the unlucky ones (One of my squad mates had to replace his 3 times within 1 year - with at least one of the devices going straight back in the box due to uncontrollable drift in multiple axises) - then it's hard to argue against the low cost of entry.
      I think TM went through a really bad patch as far as build quality was concerned - with a significant proportion of their devices being shipped broken, or failing within the first few weeks. Hopefully that has improved now - I certainly haven't heard as many complaints recently as I used to a year or 2 back...
      But if you are going to be using on a more regular basis... then I really feel it's worth spending the extra cash.

    • @nopenotme6369
      @nopenotme6369 Před rokem

      Agreed, the TM built quality is weak, and I have cleaned out the potentiometers twice now, about every 100 hours of flight.
      I was prepared to cut the cable and fabricate an extra length between the throttle and stick for my dedicated cockpit, but I tried a trial fit with the TM in its original configuration and it worked with no extra cord to spare.
      Yeah TM was cheap with the short cable between the modules.

    Hi Huddison. One feature of the Turtle Beach Flightstick I haven't seen you mention yet in any of your videos is the detent switches on the two levers. Great for airliner sim pilots as you've basically got built in TOGA or reverse thrust. Also it looks like they're mappable buttons within the sim, so presumably you could map them to whatever you want, although not sure what else would be appropriate for these! Maybe speedbrakes?

BTW I am not sure why there is a question here. One is about a decade old design and the other is barely out in the market.By far I really enjoy using the elavator trim wheel in the V1FS but not the V1 Yoke which I think I will sell it on eBay later on since I never was able to get the trim wheel on that working properly.

  • @nopenotme6369
    @nopenotme6369 Před rokem +2

    I was curious about the Velocity One, but I think I’ll pass.
    I have a Playseat Challenger with a pair of shifter platforms on the left and right chair legs, with the HOTAS One separated I have the throttle on left and stick on the right. This cockpit was designed for race simulation that I adapted for flight, instead of a brake/clutch/throttle assembly I installed rudder pedals and where the steering wheel assembly would mount I made a small desk with a keyboard and trackerball Velcro’d to the top.
    If you play with the controller on your lap I think the Turtle Beach product makes sense, but with my cockpit configuration there is no place for it.
    By the way I saw Thrustmaster has made an Airbus inspired HOTAS system that is Xbox compatible, that has peaked my interest and would open the door for some nice multi-engine flight simulation. If you can get your hands on that Airbus HOTAS and do a review that would be great.

    A recent follow up from "Robinovich" at the Flight Simulator Forum regarding losing Profiles on Xbox with 40th Ed. & VF1 Controller after V 1.4.0 firmware update:
    Robinovich:
    I have had the following response from Microsoft support:
    Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We just want to confirm that this issue has been tracked in our internal bug tracker. Since this issue will need to be addressed in a patch, we are going to close this report.
    I did delete and reinstall the sim, and that has worked for me. I was very reluctant to do it because of the 200gb of data I had to download and the time it took. But I now have full control of profile creation and saving.
    I suggested to the developers that they try and overcome this issue because it’s not the first time it’s happened with an update.
    So you have a choice, do a complete install - this worked for me but no guarantee for anyone else or wait for the patch, developers haven’t given a timeframe for this.

    I feel its s bit of a stretch calling the TB V1 Flight stick a HOTAS. Its not HOTAS in the true sense where you have you hand on the throttle and stick at the same time. For immersion factor, you need two separate units. The TM T.Flight HOTAS was and still is the entry point for flight sim peripherals. I got it when FS came to XB as it was all that was available at the time, and it was only ever going to be a place holder until one of the big boy HOTAS sets came to XB. Waiting for the Honeycomb Tango Foxtrot and Sigma Tau sets to get launch dates, as they will suit it much better. Can mount throttle on the left of my sim rig, and the stick on my right as I have with the T.Flight. Cannot do that with the Velocity Flight Stick, as I like I said, its not a HOTAS. Good looking bit of kit, and it will definitely sell well, just won't end up in my hands.

      @@Huddison I just saw some review on the T.16000 and heard the yaw axis also fails on that easily. So probably not going with that. I think I'm mostly just wondering about the precision of this stick. Is the resistance higher when you start moving the stick or is it constant, as in you don't have to apply slightly more force to get the stick moving as opposed to reaching the maximum position of the axis? What I got from your video it feels premium and the resistance is good so I'm guessing that even though it has high resistance it still feels smooth to operate.

    • @Huddison
      @Huddison  Před rokem +1

      That's a difficult question to answer, as personal perception might come into play.
      To me, the resistance seems to ease as you push, pull and bank the stick through its axes (though only slightly). It most definitely feels smooth to operate no doubt.

    I've had the Thrustmasters Hotas one for 3 years and can say it's terrible for quality control! Actually i can say i've had 8 yes 8 of them due to returns and failures in each and every one. They last three months max under reasonable use, but it was the only option for Xbox players at the time. It got to be a joke with my wife as to how long it would be before i would need to return it. When it works ie brand new out of the box it's really great for Elite you can program all the commands in Elite Dangerous if you use modifiers. But i'm not joking when i say it only works for three months max then it wil develop ghost signals being sent from the flight controls not the buttons and no you can't use deadzones to eliminate it as the signals are fulldetent siganls that are being sent for fractions of a second so you can't deadzone the full input lol. Having spoken to a few PS players the Playstation version does the same and do a quick search you will find out that it is a very common problem that the T-Flight has.
    I have found out how to fix it but does involve taking it apart and putting the sensor through it's full range of movement a few times it makes it act like new, but the issue will return and in my experience it will return quicker and quicker each time until it just gets unuseable and definitely needs replaced. Pity at the time the T-Flight was the only option we had for XBox as a Hotas and we are finally getting a few options about to arrive.
    IMHO it's an easy choice Velocity one all the way simply cause it will probably last longer than 3 months!!!! Thrust master T-flight for XBox and PS is plagued with seriously bad quality control. Plenty info on the internet to back up my claim.
