Vložit
- čas přidán 9. 09. 2020
- After 62 years as the most iconic independent recording studio, owner Paul Camarata sits down with Drew Dempsey of DFD productions to discuss all the history inside these walls! Beginning with its inception by father Salvador "Tutti" Camarata tracking & composing exclusively for Walt Disney, to beginning in the early 1960's as a rock n' roll house with The Beach Boys Pet Sounds, rock legends The Doors recording 4 groundbreaking albums as well as the story of the night Jim Morrison broke into the studio and vandalized it. The bands that would follow would be Led Zeppelin working on 2 and 4 here, Janis Joplin, Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen recording 5 albums, Toto, Smashing Pumpkins, The Black Keys, Elliot Smith, Mark Ronson, Red Hot Chili Peppers and who could forget Prince's 10 yr non stop run of recording & so much much more!!! It all happened here! Thanks for watching.

As a music geek of 48 years old this is the stuff I live for!!!
I’m a 45 year old Music Geek too!!! This is Amazing! 🎶
2:06 Yep, "When you hear the chimes, turn the page." I remember those records from when I was a kid.
OMG...I forgot all about the chimes!! My childhood just came flashing back.
I had the Jungle Book read-a-long record. I had never seen the movie (this was before video rentals but years after the initial movie release ). But I LOVED that record and book. So I was totally stoked when they brought it back to the theater in the late 70’s.
😳 y’all I forgot all about these! I had Jungle Book too! How different things are in 2021! But I know the excitement I got from that book my daughters miss on their IPads.Kinda opened my eyes
I'm 71 and at 17 I played all over in hollywood and our managers got us recording time there around 1968 , we recorded 2 songs and a old friend still has the 45 ,I have a digital copy
Email it to us
I emailed the mp3 , man it was raw, back on 1 inch tape plus not much playing experience , back when nobody was that good
Love the Sunset Sound Plug-In! Thanks for making this video. The stories are priceless
Steve Lukather talks about his days here. Many sessions, some with Jeff Porcaro and other Toto members. So glad Paul mentioned them as the ones who stood out. Studio guys who became great in the industry
Great Interview!! New the studio was famous but it’s simply incredible the amount of amazing music that came out of this studio!! Just bought a shirt!
This is so interesting. You are part of our history and our musical treasures.
I really love your video a lot. Great interview with an interesting look upon Sunset Sound's history
Amazing doc. Mil Gracias!!!
I've recorded at both Sunset Sound and Sound Factory, Blessed!!!
Excellent interview! I had the great fortune of being given an impromptu tour of Sunset Sound by Carl, when I was on my way to LAX to go to New York. It seems that there is a vibe of everyone bring really nice at this shrine of the music industry.
Hey Paul! You Look Great! Amazing Interview Guys!
These a really fun, guys. Keep 'em coming! So appreciate having Paul share all this. Thanks, Paul.
I've watched this video a couple of times, I'd love a book about Sunset Sound. The first 5 Van Halen records were a huge part of my musical journey. The sound of studio 1 and 2 are kind of imprinted on my brain.
Incredible interview...legendary studio and I believe it was around the corner from what use to be the " Cat and Fiddle " pub in the 80's & 90's on Sunset blvd . I grew up on so many of the records made there , even some of the Disney records and then the Doors and the rest of Rock history. Thanks!
Oh my God, how come I missed this video until now? I loved it, I could have listen to this chat for the next 3 hours no problem! 🤩💯👍🏻 This studio means so much to so many of us! 💖 There's just a small thing I was a bit disappointed though... when Paul was asked about the '90s, I thought he was going to mention Nirvana for sure! I know that Nevermind is well documented in Dave Growl's "Sound City" movie, but I wish he had shared some of his memories about it. Nonetheless, beautiful and very entertaining interview! Thank you so much for it!
Nevermind was recorded at Sound City, not Sunset Sound. (totally different place)
@@ULTRAMUNXisms Oh my god... you're so right! What was I thinking?? I got totally mistaken, shame on me! 🙏🏻
@@lucabiolzi1767 DUH!!!
Dave Grohl.
Thank you for this! Absolutely incredible. So much history happened at Sunset Sound.
Love this!❤❤❤❤

LOVE< to hear the stories, Tutti is amazing
Love Love what you doing. THank you
Great video! Love the history!
One last thought. Artists like Carli B get over a million hits and will not be remembered in 5 years but yet this place is the history of music of the past 50 years and has 13 comments. I'm 2 of them. That's what's wrong with music today, people have no understanding of the history and nor do they care.
Exactly .
I agree abt (some) people having no understanding nor care about history, or its deets but i respectfully disagree abt Cardi B. As repulsive as i find her genre to be she'll still be some (simple) adults childhood memory. Never forget that today is those simpletons "good ole days". But also the key to staying young is evolving with music. Try not to think "instead of", think "in addition to". The evolution of music, sound, is like a train always moving forward. Never get off the train. To remain onboard, is to remain forever young.
Carli b OK boomer
@@Temu69recordsdotcomis that all you have little guy?? 😂

Excellent interview, music made in studios have a feel , that is timeless, when you go to a studio and work in atmosphere of history its an adventure. Nothing like having a group of musicians or a band locking into a groove , its something that is magical. Just the full current
of electricity going to a console and if you can use tape is real art ,along with the acoustics in these legendary rooms .. love the passion you have in keeping Sunset Sound open . More young bands should go to studios instead of being one of the millions with a DAW and wanting a short cut to making music . Bring your hard drive from your home session and mix on a console and try out the echo chambers, you'll be glad you did one day ...

Did anybody cry when Jackson Browne came in and started banging out Late For The Sky? Name names please. 😄
Listening to Bob Welch's Sentimental Lady when it was finished had to be a magical moment too.
These a really fun, guys. Keep 'em coming! So appreciate having Paul share all this. Thanks, Paul.
Disney History!!!
Wasn't expecting THAT!
Very cool.
I would love to see Paul give a tour of the studio and show where things used to be and how things were set up.
Extremely interesting. Thanks for putting this out.

This channel is phenomenal. As a serious musician, I’d love to visit this studio sometime. These guys are just great.

Serious as in heavy achievement, or you write somber un funny music?
If Sunset Sound goes out of biz in the future the building would make an amazing museum. Huge tourist attraction! You guys have prob already thought of this tho...
I live in Connecticut but I’m fascinated with this place. My dream job would be to work there!
I had forgotten all about Sterling Holloway. That voice he had...

When I was a kid we had some of those Disney records. I haven't heard them for ages, but I can still "hear" parts of them in my head.

Amazing to hear this history on the platform responsible for adding kindling to the burning of the library of Alexandria of our time, please get these on lbry b4 gootube decides we can't hear where music was made! Just listening to everything that's been recorded here I realized basically your family has brought entertainment to my family in some form another throughout generations !!

I always think the best interviewers let their subjects speak without too much interruption or imposing their opinions or expectations. Not sure this one does tbh.
these videos are so great. wish someone would do a documentary on the history of Sunset Sound.
EDIT: just got to the end where Paul talks about the problem with doing a documentary. lack of photos or film. dang! that’s a shame. oh well. fingers crossed it still might be possible one of these days 🙏🏻
Sterling Holloway was the original voice of Winnie the Poo

Jim Morrison was a NUT!!
I see the scarf and the backwards ball cap, and I’m thinking total bullcrap. And I absolutely love this channel. Are you trying your come off as socially aware? Well, for most of us, it comes off as socially dumbed down.
And all the free music intruded the sales of CDs, thank god, they didn't quit to sale them, I'm a purify nerd about music, I'm a lucky guy, as a mixer that multitracks comes in via internet, and when I did the mix, straight to the mastering engineer. But there is one thing you have to keep in mind, quality, you won't find quality on itunes or any other streaming service. I have trained ears and I can get so the compressed and RAW recordings apart. My mentor always pointed to Sunset Studios, and if I had the money, I sure would bring a visit. But from Belgium it's an expensive trip. Good, there is youtube. Take care all.

Would loved to have been a fly on the wall when The Doors recorded the doors and strange days at sunset sound, was it true that jim morrison hosed down the studio after recording light my fire tripping out on acid and one of his boots was stuck in the fence at the recording studio when he left and jac holzman paid for the damage?
Those are some nice hoodies at the online store on the website.

I have a question, did the band Spirit record at Sunset?
You bet your ace they did!!! 🔥🤘
