  • I ended up paying my pinnacle bid for this......so if it's really hosed, then I'm really hosed. I've not worked on one of these before, so let's hope it's the same as most of the vintage 70's/80's Peavey gear......hard to kill.

Old made in USA Peaveys are always a good bet, they are almost indestructible.I know professional techs that hate to work on them because they are so well put together(solder joints, etc)

Indeed. I got a "Square Box" mixer from this era that I didn't fix....all the power transistors are shorted.... (likely improper speaker)... I got it ultra cheap, so I figure parts are good for other square box Peavey. They had a habit of re-using many parts from model to model. Monitor amp, bass amp, guitar amp, PA, all have the same power section.

I used one to power 2 Ampeg 8x10" bottoms (I played some big shows back in the 80's) - it was not only a powerhouse, but it was so reliable that after around 10 shows I told my bass tech to not even bother setting up the back-up amp. It was still going strong in 1996 when I sold it! I bought it from a friend in 1982 - he knew I had been looking for an awesome amp head, and said to me, "this is seriously what you want - trust me"! I gave him the $200, and walked away with an incredible amp. The other amp head that I used was a huge Sunn tube amp head - and OMG, that thing was massively heavy, but it had quite a punch!!!

Just bought a Mark 4 to mess around with. Always saw them for years in the bass game. This amp can hold with an 8x10 (4ohm) for big metal shows/venues?

These aren't anything classic to look at, but the performance/price was among the best of its time.

Old solid state Peaveys are near unkillable. I personally have a 1974 Peavey Standard (one of the early models without the master volume or the series/parallel inputs) and it's a tank. Loud as all hell too

I would tend to agree with you..... I also got a Mark IV powered PA head (Same auction) that has 6 of the 8 output transistors dead.... I suspect abuse. Most all of the 70's-80's Peavey stuff that I pick up at pawn/auction lots at least WANTS to work... and need just basic service to come back to life.

My wife has this bass. Its amazing. Unfortuentely i messed it up doing some recapping and need to bring it to someone more experienced. It has a great sounds for anything on the aggressive side. Especially punk runk or hardcore

I re-capped a whole Mark III mixer. One of my tricks is to put a dot on the positive side with a market.... and then change each cap individually.

@@DeadKoby yeah i did them one by one and checked everything. I think i have them correct but i may have plug the connectors in wrong and the light was on with no sound, like what happened to you. I got frustrated and close it up. I have to revisit it

@@DeadKoby I think i got all the caps right. I did them one buy one and checked carefully. I had the sane issue with the light being on and no sound. Maybe i have the connectors wrong. I got frustrated and put it aside. After i fixed the leaky caps and bad solder joints on the input jacks it worked great. I then went to recap the rest and every stopped.

It says 1982 but my mine was bought in mid '85..the production went on until about '87 i think..you can tell the later ones in that they have black hardware rather than the chrome of the originals

The kustom III had the 2x15. Lots of gusto. Into a 4ohm load, this is almost double the power of that one.
