What is the difference between an EP and an LP?
LP stands for Long Play, and means, in essence, a full album. The term began being used to refer to 12-inch 33 1/3 RPM records that have a runtime of about 30-44 minutes, and, over time, the term also started to be used with cassettes and CDs.
EP stands for extended play, which is longer than a single and not long enough to be an album.
The exact requirements are not necessarily set in stone. Different sources will give different definitions.
For sales purposes, the Recording Industry Association of America says between 3 and 5 songs, and a runtime under 30 minutes is an EP. But for Grammy Awards, an album must have five or more songs, and a runtime over 15 minutes, and they do not differentiate between LPs and EPs.
On the other hand, both Apple Music and Spotify use the criteria of 4 to 6 songs with a total runtime of under 30 minutes. Apple Music also considers a record an EP if there are 1 to 3 songs, with one song longer than 10 minutes, and a total runtime of less than 30 minutes.
But do the exact terms matter? Not really. Other than streaming services putting the album in the EP section of an artist's profile, there's no real practical difference between an album being called an EP or a LP.
    Thanks for watching.

How does it work out that I have a 12" EP running at 33 1/3 with one song per side? Are the grooves bigger or what? The runtime is super short compared to an LP, but it runs at the same speed and the same size on each side...

Great question! It's the design of the grooves, fewer grooves are needed which causes the stylus to track towards the center of the record more quickly but the song is cut into the vinyl in a way that it's the correct playback speed.

I kid you not, I have a friend I'm about to send this video to because they don't understand the difference! Having said that, I'm a proud RT85 owner.

Maxi single: 7 inches in diameter, 45 RPM, one song on one side and two on the other.
EP (Extended Play): 7 inches in diameter, 45 RPM, two songs each side.
12 inch 45: 12 inches in diameter, 45 RPM, one song each side.
12 inch maxi single: 12 inches in diameter, 45 RPM, one song one side and two on the other.
12 inch EP: 12 inches in diameter, 45 RPM, two songs each side.
LP (Long Player): 12 inches in diameter, 33 and a third RPM, say 6 songs each side

Is a 45 RPM 12" meant to disguise an EP as an LP, in a sense?

To me, an EP should have about 5-7 songs. Only a CD maxi/Cassette maxi or a 12 inch vinyl should have 3 songs on it.

album is six or more songs with a total running time of 30 minutes
or more and in digging into spotify's information spotify seems to simply say
that an ep is up to six songs in less than 30 minutes 44

And Can you please 🙏 make a CZcams tutorial on does album 💿 sequencing change and also make a CZcams tutorial on more than 6 or 7 tracks and more than 30 minutes to consider a record aka studio album 💿? My album 💿 monster by r.e.m is actually about 49:05 and it has about 12 tracks and it has above 6 tracks aka above 7 tracks does it count as a studio album 💿? And why are album 💿 are viewed as one big story?

It is a cohesive collection of songs used to tell a bigger theme or project an overall vibe. Think of an album as a book. And your songs as chapters. Every book has chapters. Every album has songs. Each chapter is different. Each song is different. But the collection of chapters (the collection of songs) is what tells the full story of the book (of the album). Usually the songs on an album are the result of an artist's creations during a season of life. This means the songs can all speak to a similar set of themes, ideas and topics. So the aim of an album name is to try and sum up the big story/concept that all the songs pull from when they were written. It's not always like these, especially today. But traditionally, an album is like a "book" with the songs inside being like "chapters." Fun stuff! (I think 🤓) is that true jonathan why are studio album 💿 are viewed as one big story and does studio records count to have 6 or more songs aka 7 or more songs and more than 30 minutes to count as a record example monster by r.e.m. has about 12 tracks and it has about 49:05 aka 48:38? Do they count as a studio record even though it is pass 30 minutes and more than 6 or 7 tracks what’s your opinion about it?
