More thoughts on the project: Wow, this was a fun one y’all. We knew we wanted to power carve a bench and originally thought we would sculpt it into an interesting shape. However, after testing the TURBO Plane on some scrap wood and seeing the texture it left, we knew we wanted a textured wood look. With the different colored grain of the pecan wood under the power carved texture, it kinda looked like rain causing ripples in water, hence the name Ripple Bench. We feel weird about naming our bench…haha.
We were pretty new to power carving before this project and it was surprisingly easy to learn. The biggest takeaways: cut so that the blade carves with the grain, not against it, and have a light hand rather than a heavy hand. Also, practice! It’s very easy to maneuver once you practice a little bit and figure out what result you want.
This bench is the biggest project we’ve built so far, and that’s really exciting! Now we want to do more larger furniture pieces. We just love how it turned out - it’s modern and organic at the same time. And we can’t help but touch it every time we walk by haha. - Jak na to + styl

EvanAndKatelyn, y’all should do a bookshelf! Also my little sister Kenzie loves watching your videos with me. She calls y’all ven and laylyn.
Would love to see you revisit this texture - Maybe with resin on top!

This would look awesome on a headboard! Or a bookcase! Or a nightstand! Or your cousin Greg! I love this texture!
Hahaha! Texture ALL the things! Thank you :D

"Hey guys, what are you doing there?"
"Oh, just taking our bench for a walk."
"Sure, sure..." *scratches head*
What, other people don't do that?? 😋😉
EvanAndKatelyn I would, if I had that kind of bench ;) Someday I'll replicate that!
Alright, I'm just going to come right out and say it...
I want to feel the texture of your wood
Any time Paul, consider this an open invitation.
EvanAndKatelyn boy oh boy! Looks like a round trip from DC to Houston is only $300... Worth it!
we normal charge a $300 fee but considering the cost of the ticket, we'll waive it

Not sure what impresses me more - your projects or your video editing. Top notch work all around!
Thanks so much! This was one of our favorite projects to make AND to edit :D
maybe try a coffee table with a light clear epoxy cover so things could be level when they rest on it. so the texture shows through but it is functional for cups etc
love this idea!
It's so interesting how your videos have changed over the past few years! From super helpful tip-oriented DIY tutorials to silly cursed artist explorer friends! Both helpful and fun.

Aw thank you!
I love how you put googly eyes on everything! Its so cute!! XD

You two always bring a smile to my face. I'm very glad to see Katelyn remembered to put on the safety glasses. I also want to complement you two on your amazing camera work, editing, cinematography. I love the artistry of all your work, both the work you video tape and the work of making the video, but this one stood out to me as excellent. I love the shot above the table saw, and the shots of the chop saw, very nice, love the unique camera angles and focal points, dof, boca, I just love all of it. Excellent work and thank you two so much for bringing what you do to the world. The bench itself is absolutely gorgeous, but the way you two filmed this is what takes the cake for me.
Thank you so much for the compliments and kind words! We really love the camera work and editing side of videos so that means a lot to us that it stood out to you! (I'm glad I remembered safety glasses too, close one!)
That moment when you're so proud of your bench you take it to the park.
😂❤️
It's adorable to see baby @evanandkatelyn
Textured drawer fronts would be great. You could even apply this texture to an internal door/sliding door. I'm really tempted to buy a large wooden plant pot or set of bowls and add this texture to the outside! Your bench turned out beautifully, but I think the most enjoyable and inspiring aspect of this video was seeing how much fun you two had working on it together :)
Ooooooh! We may have to do that. Right now we have an IKEA dresser lol. We've basically been going around slowly upgrading our furniture to real wood pieces. Aww and thanks!! We do have a blast together, it's the reason we wanted to start the channel :)
People in the park: why are people recording a bench?
Me: *don't question it*
😂😂😂
That texture is awesome! I think it could look cool on the face of a dresser or console.
+Modern Builds Thanks Mike!!! Ooh yeah that would be awesome, good idea! Having the texture on a side face would open up a lot more furniture types (that would typically require a flat top for sitting stuff on)
+Modern Builds It would look amazing if you did a solid piece of carved material, and then cut the solid piece down to make all the drawer fronts from it, so the pattern is continuous between them. If you don't make this for your channel, I might have to add it to my to-do list!
+Modustrial Maker that would be super awesome! Especially if there was some striation in the grain like we had here to show that it was continual. Haha I think we are gonna claim it for our next Arbortech video!
Paper, rock, scissors at Workbenchcon to figure out who gets this one? :) Or maybe its a good collab with a white concrete top on the dresser, hmmm.....
@@EvanAndKatelyn what if you did the texture then covered it with clear resin to kind of reflect on a dresser

Thata what i was thinking!!!😱😱😂😂🤣🤣
These two beautiful people love each other so much it physically hurts me.

This bench came out amazing! The texture looks so cool. There is going to be an uptick on Turboplane sales for sure!
Thanks so much!! Haha we hope so, happy sponsor means happy youtubers!
Just a normal day in the park taking a photo shoot of a bench from EVERY ANGLE 😂😂
The bench looks amazing well done 🙂
I love that you took your bench for a walk when you were done.
i just found this channel two days ago, ive seen sOOO many videos since then! in love with these two
❤️❤️ thank you!
My first thought for a project was 'super fancy toilet seat'... maybe I should have used a different account to post that suggestion.
bahahahahahaha. now that is a good idea.
I weirdly had the same idea before I even read this comment 😂
That would certainly leave dimples on your butt. Might not want to do that if you're wearing leggings. Just an observation. 🤣
@@roger80465 immagine having to brush a code red oopsie out of those dimples
it'd be really cool to do a table that has this texture but also a resin river running through it, since the texture is so evocative of flowing water!
ahh old evan and katelyn with epic montage footage video.... just how I remembered it
Just imagine them having a kid and how many more projects there would be to do😢
That texture is dope. Facing anything with it would look cool, although facing EVERYTHING with it might be visually overwhelming.
Also, ain't nothin' in this world can't be remedied with big ol' clamps.
Thanks Brandon! Haha yeah, we had to resist adding the texture to the sides too because we worried it might be too much (or maybe it would have looked cool - hard to know without doing it! Agreed about the big ol' clamps!
I like how they did a legit photoshoot with a bench.
From someone who did 4 years off wood work at school and college and does it as a full time job I love watching your videos to see what new could and funky things you come up with but there is a much easier and stronger way off creating the box form for the bench
Turned out so good y’all! It’s amazing how much of a difference the grain direction makes when power carving. Noticed the same thing when I was carving. Also, that natural light during the miter saw bits.... so nice!
Thanks Johnny!! Ah man I know, HUGE difference with the grain direction. Haha and glad we can count on the other CZcamsrs to notice things like lighting... we were definitely obsessed with how the lighting looked in some of these shots!
You should try kutzall. It's been a lot easier on larger carvings.
Cinematography is on point in this video👌👌👌
Thanks so much! Glad you like it!
Combining this texture with a beach themed resin pour... 😱😍
You’re channel is so binge worthy!
Thank you! ❤️❤️
Why are y’all so adorable!!! Also I jus love this channel

EvanAndKatelyn is it bad that I’m now a squealing and happy mess...I’m not used to creators actually responding.
Normal people : let's take the kids to the park.
E&K: let's take the bench to the park :v 😂😂😂
😂😂❤️
Recently joined the EvanandKatelyn club, maybe do some picture frames with the same technique to match in the bench's room. A irregular shaped wide rimmed frame would be sooo cool!
That'd be super pretty!
Not only did I like the bench but I can't help but smile all the way through your video.
thank you and thank you! That makes us happy to hear :)
i want a relationship like this so bad they’re so cute together
U guys r so weird...
I love it
😂👍😁
SUPER TIP: When trying to sand something like that you can use the very fine metalic sponges we use for the dishes. There are some scotch brite with powder soap in them, those are the best. You get a very smoth surface with little effort
I know this is from two years ago, but I have that Texas Forever shirt!!! This means I might have accidentally twinned with Evan at some point! Amazing!
you guys have fab rhythm with your editing i love it
Thanks!! All credit goes to Katelyn, she puts a ton of time into getting it JUUUUST right, I'm sure you can relate lol :D
That looks amazing! You really need some hand planes though, it cuts your sanding time down by 1 trillion times.
+Hand Tool Rescue we got to try some for the first time with Johnny Brooke and they are so satisfying!! We wanna get some!
A scraper and a cheap hand plan is under $40 so it pays off in time pretty quick. A cheap sharp hand plane can work magic still. Maybe some support blocks would have added strength and allowed fewer screws...
Put this on a serving tray and then clear-ish resin over it. Ocean or Galaxy or cotton candy colors!!!🤩
This bench would look so cool covered in resin!
Damn this looks sweet! It's a really nice idea with grinding the surface into ripples, maybe you could try doing that on the sides of pieces you make instead of the top?
Definitely worth not doing art homework to watch this ;D
Thank you! Ooooo yeah doing on the sides would open up different types of projects we could do with it (like tables or things that typically need a flat top). Glad we could be bad influences and pull you away from homework for 14 minutes. Which is ironic for me (Katelyn) to say since I literally couldn't do any relaxing til I finished my homework! Much self discipline, I had
EvanAndKatelyn hahaha thats great! Can't wait to see what you come up with then
Love it! That texture seems REALLY addictive 😀
Thank you! Ahhh it's SO addictive. We'd put it on everything if we could
While I do appreciate how well out together these older videos are I definitely miss the silly stuff we get to see in newer videos!
This bench reminds me of the pattern that waves crashing on the land leave. This bench is amazing!!
Thank you! 🌊
One word: spicy
You gotta remember Arbortech is an Australian company - Western Australian at that. The wood they use to demo at all the shows (at least in Australia) is Jarrah, which is as hard as pecan. It's only considered medium density down under!
If you're looking for practice, in December I did a "Twisted Candle Holder" using the Turbo Plane. It's a pretty quick (and low on wood cost) practice piece that I found helped develop a bit more control and familiarity with the tool, how it acts on various grain, etc. Might be worth a shot.
Haha, wow that's crazy that pecan is just medium density there! Guess we had nothing to worry about ;P Oooo that definitely looks like a cool project to practice with, especially to get practice on doing some actual shaping. Thank you!
Yes I am from Australia and have done many projects in Jarrah and that is no where as hard as Messmate or Ironbark which are really hard timbers. We have some really hard timbers down here.
Steve's Festool Shed Talk Can we assume that its sap is a lethal poison that can kill an adult human in minutes? It *is* Australian after all...
probably your best shot AND best edited video ever! and the music complements the shots so well too!
A dining table with a center panel with this texture kind like a built in table runner would look amazing ... this bench really matches the entry way hook station u made guys looks brilliant
That would be so cool! Thank you 😁😁
Such an amazing finish!!! Super epic project. lol - I have sneezed in your presence... So glad I waited for all of the out takes.
Thanks Brad! hahaha, and thanks for sticking around for the outtakes :D
Was just thinking about how cool it would be to use this technique to make the base for a concrete form...the shape would be inverted in the concrete and you'd get a cool fish scale look I think... By the way, 2 days in it looks like this one is on its way to being hit!
That's an awesome idea! would love to see it in concrete. And yeah, this one is doing well so far! Fingers crossed!
As someone who was raised by Texans, these videos are super pleasant to watch!
P.S. Thanks for pronouncing pecan correctly
Haha thank you!! Everyone was teasing us for not saying "pee-can" 😂
I have literally watched each one of your videos at least 8 times
I love the texture, looks amazing E&K! 😍 ... Great job on the video as well! 👍👍👊👊 .... Maybe try the texture on a headboard and footboard or night stands (probably going to need glass to top them with) and a blanket chest.
Thanks Fred! Ooooo so many good ideas. I bet it would look really cool under glass, and it would definitely work for a chest or headboard/footboard. Thanks!
OMG Katelyn - you really good at the artsy stuff that requires finesse and technique.
Thank you! 😁❤️
I dont comment usually on videos but I just have to give props to the editor this video has been one of the best edited videos I've seen in a while and all the camera views make the video 100 times video and the music really brings the video together great job!!👏
Thank you so much!
That’s a really cool texture. Great job.
Thanks Chad! We're kinda obsessed with it!
EvanAndKatelyn I’ve been looking at them for years. I think I have a tool collection problem. Maybe when the Woodworking Show hits the ATL.
It's not a problem!! Let's all just encourage each other's tool collecting issues... I mean habits :D
Beefy beefy. When just "beefy" ain't enough beef. And omg the "wife booster". I need one of those! And I love the flashlight tip for finishing! Great video as always and the bench looks fantastic. Maybe coordinating stools for your next power carving project? Or a coffee table would be cool. Or maybe a dining room table with a glass top on, er, top?
the wood of many beefies! Haha for real, the worktable is built for Evan height so I often need a stool to get leverage :P Ooooo man so many things to choose from - I love the idea of stools! And we do need some new bar stools actually...
I end up crouched in weird positions to get more leverage at my worktable. Or sitting on my feet on a stool which is soooo comfortable for long periods of time. ;) Yay new bar stool possibility! :)
oh man I'm so often sitting on my feet - bad habit! mah poor knees!!
Just realized I'm sitting on a foot right now. Oops. Sorry, knees!!! (keeps sitting on foot)
I'M DOING IT TOO! gahhhh (also keeps sitting on foot)
would be so cool if y'all collaborated with Bobby Duke Art! :D
9:06 Words you never expected to be uttered by Evan of all people.
You could texture a board and then CNC stuff out of it. Like the Texas thing. Love it all!
Ooooo that's a really unique idea! I wonder if we'd have to do any special instructions to account for the texture or if we just carve it according to the material's thinnest point, hmmmm. Thanks!!
EvanAndKatelyn yeah, I’d probably start with a 2D cut and set it for the original thickness. Try it out and throw it on Patreon.
could be cool! yeah if we get a chance to test it we'll definitely post it there :D
Cnc carve a lighthouse and use the tool to make water texture...
Grant Clarke cool idea!

I found your channel last night and now I’ve been binge watching all your videos... why am I just now finding you guys
So glad you're liking the videos! ❤️
All the small youtubers are better and more consistent with vids than the big youtubers. Agree?
We're doing our best!
Hi guys! I just wamted to say that I absolutely love every single one of your videos and they give me so much inspiration for future diy projects once I get my own place. Do you guys have any tips for essential tools you would need for people starting out on diy woodworking projects?
Aw thank you!! You can do a lot with a circular saw and a drill. A random orbit sander will help make finishing things less of a chore, but it's optional. And of course, there are basic supplies that help with any project, like clamps, glue, screws, things like that. Our best advice is pick a project and start with the tools you need for that specific project! We have a list of our favorite tools and links to everything here if you wanna browse: evanandkatelyn.com/tools/ Hope this helps get you started!
EvanAndKatelyn Thank you so much!!!

ya'll should make a hanging flower holder, i know you can buy them online and at stores but i think you should make a hanging flower holder. or maybe ya'll could make a swinging bench, it would be hard but if you put your mind to it you can!
Ohh i see you can go now on a walk with that bench 🌼. It is looking sooo good
So...what did you end up having for dinner? Mmmm...tacos. That bench is super nice, and there was something oddly satisfying about that pile of shavings from the carver.
Haha, we ended up having tacos!! Once you think about tacos, you can't NOT have tacos 🌮🌮 We totally agree about the satisfying pile of shavings!! Thank you!
Woohoo! Thumbs up for taco night!
+Dosbomber haha! Taco night is a frequent occurance in this household! And taco morning. Breakfast tacos are 👍👍👍
EvanAndKatelyn, We do Taco Tuesday in our household. It is a good thing your video came out on Tuesday cause we were already set!
Wait, you guys have $200,000 in woodworking equipment and you are NoT? professionals? Hmmm..I was in the wrong line of work.
A little late, but a small living room table with this texture on top and epoxy after to make it smooth and more usable :D could be an interesting visual maybe?
That texture would look great on seat backs, picture frames, or even a counter top with a thick layer of self leveling lacquer.
Ooooo love the idea of adding lacquer. Thanks!
oohhh textured headboard
oooo yesssss that would be beautiful!
Ohhh that would be beautiful!!! Great idea

😂
Sweet bench, guys. That texture really sells it.
Thank you! We ♥️ the texture
AWESOME work guys!! Here's a shellac tip. Usually the stuff in the can is thicker than I like. I usually thin it with about 1/3 denatured alcohol to 2/3 shellac and you get a finish that evens itself out.
Thank you! And thanks for the tip!
Why is Evan wearing safety glasses and you are not? Lol. I'm on a safety team at work so everything is popping out at me currently.
I know it's my bad! I switched to wearing them after a little bit of carving so I have em in the later shots, but I was so excited to start I forgot to wear them. Evan, on the otherhand, is pretty much in safety glasses 24/7 :)
I love the nice shots at the end, and they cracked my husband and I up at the same time!!
Katelyn is so gorgeous! Evan is so lucky!
Can't wait to spend my retirement days doing some wood work, first have to work for another 60 years but damn it's so great
+GenghisDong why not start a little earlier? We started on our apartment balcony before we had a house (it was tiny... but it worked!)
😂😂😭😭👏🏼👏🏼 you guys had me dying with the wife booster 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Haha! It's a necessity in the shop!
Make a bed frame with that texture on the sides. I think it would look awesome.
Definitely want to try putting the texture on more furniture pieces!
I really liked the cinematography in this video, I feel like you went a little different than you normally do, and I like it!
Thanks! Yes this is a slightly older video so the style is a little different 😁
AHHHH THEYRE BABIES!
Those are some gorgeous ripples, Katelyn! How about making a matching round wooden chandelier/pendant type of lamp with the same ripples. That would look awesome! But it would involve electrical 🤔. Love y'alls videos and projects of course!
+Janie Gonzalez thank you!!!! Ooo that would be really fun, lighting electrical doesn't scare us (we've replaced just about every light in our house ourselves!) Thanks!
You guys are like couple goals!
Aww thank you!!!
I think doing that texture on the front of cabinet doors would look awesome
Oooo I think that would be awesome! Thank you :)
Your video editing makes the process so fun!!

It keeps my short attention span occupied :)
Thank you! We do one every week 😁👍

Looks so good, between this and Paul Jackman's legs I'm really wanting to get a Turboplane. The other people at the park at must have been like "that couple is way to in love with that bench, they need some serious help"
Would highly recommend getting one! Seriously. So. Fun. Haha and yes we got a lot of weird looks at the park... and one very curious gentleman coming up and talking to us for a while trying to figure out what was going on!
Ok, now I'm done with the video. Turned out very cool. I love the textured look.
