China University Dorms - Foreigners Get Better Dorms Than Locals

  • A short movie made by foreign student Futura Costaglione went viral on Sina Weibo this week. The film, titled “One Country, Two Dorms”, features the ‘two different worlds’ within Chinese university dormitories. In the short movie project made for a class assignment, Costaglione interviewed 12 students (six Chinese and six foreign) from two colleges in Lanzhou and Beijing, and compared their dorm conditions. The movie shows that Chinese students have very different living conditions from their foreign counterparts; while the foreign students enjoy spacious 2-person dorm rooms, the local Chinese students have crowded 6 to 8-people rooms to live in.

@@BlondyBeautyful Says who? Only one of the foreign guys in the video said he didn't have to pay. Most people I know have to pay for their own accommodation, and it's way more than what the Chinese students pay. That doesn't mean the Chinese student dorms shouldn't be higher quality - they absolutely should. But if I was expected to pay up to 10 times what a native student paid and then the quality of the accommodation turned out the same, I'd be pissed off.

However the difference between our dorms and theirs is not that dramatic and our living conditions are pretty decent. I think in China the situation is so bad because of the large population.

Did you get to have cooking appliances? I saw them in the foreigner dormitories but I couldn't tell if they were present/what the rules were in the Chinese one. And if not, what were the meal plan rules? I know a lot of US Universities are really strict and only let you use the meal plan you are required to buy in the dining halls. It's a big deal on tours that my University allows it to be used on retail food and coffee sold by the University. I know there wouldn't be space for large appliances, but could you at least have a rice cooker and a kettle without getting yelled at for "creating a fire hazard". The dorms my school offers are for the most part very nice, but only being able to have appliances without an exposed heating element sucked. There's only so much you can make with a microwave and an approved pod coffee maker, at least you can have a decent sized mini fridge to store your food in.

The problem should be about scholarship, i'm assuming that foreigners with scholarship will have better room than locals with scholarship. As a foreigner i would be happy in that treatment but i'd also symphatize with my local friends as the government mistreats their citizens. I also see in this video that locals are rather accepting(not complaining much) about this, i think because people can't badmouth the government in China in the open, being the communist country that it is.

This video is okay for most of the part, but I don’t think it appropriate to make the conclusion like this. I have an experience in Both Chinese dorms and international dorms. The former is much bitter and inhuman than the conclusion.

It is incorrect to ascribe the difference of living conditions of the internationals and the locals to their different costs. I mean it is totally wrong. Why? To see the reason, think about this: So far 6 Chinese students share a room, but you know what? Most Chinese students would be very willing to pay 6 times as much to live alone in that room, only if they were allowed to (living on-campus is much more convenient in China than in the US). Then why are they living so tight after all? The real reason is that the space of the campus is very limited, while the government always reserve much more per-person-space to foreigners than to locals. That’s the real reason why the Chinese students live in such shitty condition. Don’t you believe me? Ask the Chinese students around you for confirmation. The reason that the internationals live much better than the locals is because the commie government always put politics prior to the interests of the Chinese people, and this is nothing strange in the long, dark history of CCP.
