To be fair, it was also Eric's fault. He should've warned Francis while he was in jail in the Alaskan town not to far from Mamu that the job was going to suck and Lavernia is much worse than Spangler.
I think Francis had the best character development of anyone on the show. Started out as a punk kid who never fell in line, but by the end, was a mature, responsible, hard-working adult.

The ranch was supposed to stay in season 6, but Kenneth Mars left the show because he was suffering from pancreatic cancer at that time. Had he been well, the original season 6 plans for the ranch would've gone as planned.

He hated Alaska more because not only Eric failed to warn him about the job sucking, but also Lavernia is much stronger and can break her workers emotionally with her knowledge of their secrets and her debt book. The only good thing about Alaska was that he met and married Piama out of love. She was the only one who wasn't afraid to take Lavernia on and hit her at her hardest by kidnapping her precious pet parakeet. She made it clear to Lavernia that if she doesn't treat Francis much better, the bird dies.
