Hey all, I decided to also make some tutorials for OpenTTD! In this first episode I'll show you how to make a good start in the game, which should give you enough money to get you going and expand!

The way to combat breakdowns is to schedule your vehicles to enter a depot as a part of their route. Doing it this way maintains the vehicle reliability at the cost of traveling to the depot. Trains will also have the added cost of depot related related traffic.
The older they get, they become more prone to breakdowns. Their old age is the sign that you're supposed to update the vehicle so you can update them before their full lifespan.
everyone forgets or either does not know, this was the first tycoon game out, all the rest are like this one. not the other way around.
I think it's pretty well-known :) Chris Sawyer's games are great!
This game looks so much like RCT2 that I didn't even notice it wasn't RCT from looking at the thumbnail.
Train Line 1 looks too intense for me!
I clicked on it, cause I thought it was RCT2. If you are a fan of RCT2, there is some Dutch CZcamsr, who does cool indepth videos about the game. He's called "Spirit Of The Law" or something.
@@SquareWaveHeaven I want to go on something more thrilling than City 1.
Try Chris Sawyer's Locomotion
*Miniature Train 1 looks too intense for me.*
Dont know if you guys gives a shit but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all of the new series on instaflixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend for the last couple of days :)
@Finnley Uriah yea, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for years myself =)
Build airports in the two largest cities and buy three of the biggest passenger planes, run two of them back and forth normally and convert the last one to handle only mail. It literally takes a few minutes to set up and nets you a nice profit, so you can start building more elaborate train networks with the profits.
It nets you a stupid amount of profit. So much I dont use it and instead do busses for the first 10 years (1930 start) then start trains. On the 1950 start a single plane between two major cities can net 70k a year. Might as well play with money cheats if you're going to have multiple planes because you just have to wait a few years and you wont run out if your building on fast forward.
@@whatwhat7119 Yeah, it does net you a lot of profit but I don't agree that you might as well play with money cheats. Doing profitable stuff within the rules of the game is not the same as cheating... ever.
@@ZeroTheHeroGOAT it's like making a circle to 10 towns with a railroad at game start. That nets you around 80k a year with three trains. Then just go to another corner and build with the money coming it. Or connecting 2-3 coal to a powerplant or iron to steel, 40-50k a year for half that investment. Then build from the other side of the map and fix it when you get there.
@@whatwhat7119 Or you could just build the damn airports and reap the cash with little effort and start from there.
@@ZeroTheHeroGOAT two aircraft make the same amount as a 8 city bus and mail service in 1935. And I didnt even optimize the aircraft for multiple routes. Yes some should make more then others because efficiency but when one just requires ploping down two airports and the other quite a bit of planning to make profitable it's basically a free money cheat. I normally pick what transportation system I'm going to use and stick to it, unless its ships then I use a second one for transport. Planes is just a free money system otherwise.
Chris Sawyer is a legend and a personal hero of mine.
Transparent scenery and buildings can be adjusted in the transparency menu and you can show stations and industry building whilst in transparent mode which is how I have it. Also loading percentages. You ctrl-click the icons to keep them in that state on both transparent and opaque modes.
This game is so fun and I'm so happy i found it. Great video 👍
Thanks! Haven't played it in a while, but I'm happy this video still gets players started in the game!
05:05 It's not as bad with passengers as it seems from that graph, because with passengers you generally can transport a reasonable number of them on the return journey (if you transport between cities of approximately the same size). Whereas with coal etc. you have trains that are completely empty on the return journey.
I'd estimate that taking the return journey into account, passengers pay approximately around the same as wood (if you transport between cities that no not differ too much in size). So still not as good as coal, but not as bad as the graph makes it seem.
Good point!
@@Deurklink Thanks! Groeten uit Leipzig.
you should do more OpenTTD videos - love the channel - your voice sounds darker here than in the newer videos 😮
I used my built-in laptop microphone in these old videos, which quite a few people complained about :)
More please, love this game
Just a heads up, the way you added the videos to the playlist has them in reverse order, so you have to manually click each video instead of letting the playlist run. Just wanted to say something as it’s an easy oversight. And these are really great videos, so don’t want anyone to miss out on them!
Thanks for the heads up, I think they're sorted correctly now!
Hooray!! Thanks so much ❤
You just might get me into this game
depending on start and if you can (you have some modern airplanes not those shoddy farty old ones) - go airplanes. Easy money, easy start, huge profits you'll pay off your debt in no time.
Chris Sawyer needs to create some new games man!
he already *died....* *crying*
@@brogaming7393 ???
@@EnricoUniverse he only lasted to 2019 so, **C R Y I N G**
@@brogaming7393 i can see nowhere that he died
Ooh, love OpenTTD
Then I have good news for you, there will be more videos!
@@Deurklink can you make git gud at theotown too? Its a game where you have to build a city for android idk if its available for windows
thx you so much
The benefit of passenger transport is that you can transport them both ways. Cargo you can only transport one way and your vehicle returns empty
You can also transport mail and valuables back and forth
@@Deurklink Fair point but you can only transport valuables in one climate and cities generate much less mail compared to passengers
Personally I avoid businesses (I don't even have FIRS) because they keep closing down on me (although FIRS might be a bit more forgiving). Passengers are a reliable income and it's a growth industry! The key to making money in this game is buses and the dreaded timetable!
The most pro way to play ottd is bus circuits connecting train lines and you must have symetric cargo model for passengers and asymetric for cargo.
I never knew you could turn off vehicle breakdowns. Would have helped my ferry services :P
Yea I always play without breakdowns.. It does take away some of the challenge, but I just don't like the way breakdowns work..
@@Deurklink Breakdowns are important in making some vehicles more desirable which have a higher reliability. Also it should be mitigated by including depots in the schedule or lowering the days before a service. I don't mind the mechanic. If your network slows down too much it's because your stock is old probably. It does make the game significantly more difficult.
Is coal a better early-game source of income than oil? I've always started out with both coal and oil. Then again I've never been very good at this game. Looking forward to more videos.
The problem with oil wells is that under normal circumstances they will never increase production. They'll dry up at some point, which makes them less reliable for making money in the long run. Later on in the game, oil rigs should be spawned which are a more reliable source of oil.
@@Deurklink i love your rollercoaster vids!!!! your explanation of this game is good but this is just a average start. optimal would be 2 way for double profits. coalmine a to powerplant b to coalmine b to powerplant a. this gives you double the money for only abit more time. also try to go as much diagonal as possisble this gives more profit. there where a couple of god players for openttd but to bad there server stopped:(. got a link of some of that magic. czcams.com/video/kHgsCHDChHw/video.html
Hey thanks. I think you misunderstand the goal of my tutorial though.. I am just trying to create some beginner-friendly OpenTTD tutorials here, and slowly advance to more advanced concepts. I know how the game works ;)
Hey everyone
What kind of Chris Sawyer's Locomotion is this?
This is the open source version of Transport Tycoon, it was the first big tycoon game Chris Sawyer released.
OpenTTD vs Locomotion? Which is better in your opinion?
I haven't played locomotion much yet, but so far I liked openttd a lot more. Especially the interface feels a lot better
Everything looks great, except that your playlist is in reverse so Episode 1 is on the bottom and the newest is on top of the playlist.
So many YTers do that, I wish YT had an option to reverese a playlist
What you can do is to click the little "Watch later" icons on every video, so you can make your own chronological playlist pretty damn fast
