Who else is here 2024 listening to this sad song bc of MrBallen's story 😢 💔
Just watched the episode. Never knew the backstory. I remember when the song came out all those years ago!
Me😂
I had to come take a listen after that, this is one of my favorite 90's songs.
I always loved this song but that's why I'm listening now
That’s me. I am here because of Mr. Ballen‘s video. That’s pretty funny that other people came to check it out too. I did recognize the song though. By the way, he sang it he didn’t do too bad. interesting little bit of trivia though. And I love Mr. Ballen.
Anyone Listening in 2024 ? 👍🎶
Yo. De lo mejor.
SONIDO VAGO EL GIGANTE DE PENNSYLVANIA me. I’m from Texas. I remember hearing about the real story of this song. Trippy af.
Me 1/25/2020 grudge :)
Re-learning that great bass part...we gotta play this one.
Right here bro
Thank you Mr. Ballen for the story behind this song! RIP Raymond and Lela
That's what brought me here too!
Another song from the 90's about an actual event. Budd Dwyer. Man wrongly accused who committed suicide.

Yes girl. That’s what why I came here too. Always loved this song growing up as well. Love mr. B
I came from Mr Ballens video too
Came here for that reason too, thanks Mr B
Never knew this song was based on a true story. Got to love Mr. Ballen
Thats why I came haha
haha You too? I just came from Mr. Ballen (hands down the best storyteller on YT) and was hoping to hear from a fellow Ballen fan. I always liked this song and I find it even more beautifully haunting now, knowing the backstory. 🧢

I can't believe it, this is the song I've been trying to find since I was 10 years old. There was this one summer in the 90's they played it on the radio a couple times and I loved it, but the DJ never said the name, and then they never played it again. I remember going to the music shop and flipping through as many CDs as I could trying to see if any of the titles sounded remotely familiar. And back then you could scan the bar codes on the CDs and play previews of the songs on headphones in the shop, and I'd do that over and over. I never found it. By the time the internet became searchable enough that I could probably find it, I couldn't remember enough of it to properly search it. Somebody mentioned it by title just now and I thought, "Wait is, that...?" and looked it up immediately. I'm just really excited right now, this is such a strange feeling.
I kbow how you feel, I was the same
Me too
I found this among the sea of comments on reddit by mistake .. They were doing " write-singing " and someone posted the link at the end .. What they commented on was a gif of ants buidling tunnels in a transparent glass case . Pretty cool :)
I also went about 3 years trying to find out what this song was. No clue until I bought a cassette one day with various songs. I was playing it and this came on. I think I broke a glass. Just flat dropped it. But now I listen to it a lot. Just glad I found it. Well worth the wait!!
Same here, 10 years ago I was in a band with my uncle and he told me he would love to play this song, I agreed to play this song and after 10 years I started to look for this song but couldn’t remember the lyrics
This song will never get old and grey.
And for it, we're happier there
yes
I will.

For so many years just now i heard it again! we back to my high school day! This song will never get old and grey!
How many people are hearing this song with new understanding thanks to Mr. b
Ballan!
When he sang it, it sounded familiar but I don’t even remember listening to this song but clearly I have. Thanks Mr ballen

This is fantastic...I ❤this song! RIP Lela & Raymond... may the streets you walk on now truly be paved in gold.
So sad hearing there story from MrBallen earlier today. Especially as the cops pulled them over in the next state and didn't notice who they were. Such a sad story
I’m 47 . I am in the sandwich generation, with my 2 boys 17 and almost 20. My parents are in their 70’s. My mom’s mom passed from dementia at 84 but it definitely starts off 10 years earlier. My dad’s mom is 95, still alive and in better physical condition than him.
I feel like a double decker cream cookie, bottom layer of cream!
This song immortalized the couple that went missing n that’s the sweetest thing someone could do for them
A cliff a couple and a marone 4 door sefan
I thought this tune was an old Tom Jones song.
If you look up their story on KVUE, you will see that the family feels the same way. They're incredibly touched by the song and by the fact that it's remembered and loved all these years later, matches they would have hoped for their loved ones to be.
RIP Raymond and Lela. True Love.
Dang 1 year ago. We all found out 4 days ago from Mr ballen
This was one of my moms favorite songs. She passed suddenly in November 2022 4 days before Thanksgiving. I miss her something awful.
I'm sorry ❤
The road that she walks on is paved in gold
I know the feeling. My mom passed 12 years ago, and I still miss her every day. It will never be OK that your mom's not here, but you WILL get used to a new "normal" eventually. Hang in there, friend. 🙂
your mom loved a song about a couple who killed themselves? wtf XD
I'm so sorry for your loss! Much love and sincere condolences to you and your family. It's especially hard when we lose our parents. 💙
Thx to Mr Ballen I now know the story behind this great song. This song came out the yr I graduated high school. RIP Raymond and Lela, and may ur streets in heaven be paved w gold.
RIP Uncle Raymond and Aunt Lela, my great aunt and uncle. I'll never forget when they were missing, and we had such high hopes they'd be found. I think the song is a neat tribute, but the words do not describe how it happened. Still great to have a song written with them in mind.
I hear ya. But I'd like to think your aunt and uncle said after they realized they went to far and were lost, they said "screw it ... lets just keep going and have some fun". Like, live life to the last bit of fullness while they can still walk and breathe to do it. Which is what I take from the song now/today.
Oh, they're fine, we've just been chilling with them for the past year.
They were togethor...
Tony Scalzo more or less said he filled in the blanks and used his imagination after reading the initial story. There was still speculation at that point.
The factual incident is both tragic and inspiring. I first and last heard The Way in ‘98 while living in Willamette valley; now I’m in central Texas, woke up this morning obsessed with hearing this song again & able to find it - only remembering “Fastball”. What happened to Raymond & Lela and “The Way” has triggered many of us to reflect on our aging bodies & youthful wistfulness. Great guitar and bass riffs BTW.
Almost 30 years later this song is still on my playlists and everytime it comes on I'm singing along. God, the 90s was a font of some of the absolute best music.
Absolutely, I was a 70’s kid and a 80’s teen, but to me the 90’s really stand out for songwriting and talent.
The 90s were a great time! For music and gaming, technology and all that too.
When this chorus kicks in, you KNOW you know this song!
Still odd to say that it was 30 years ago 😳
I thought this song was about twenty-six years ago like 97 or 98 because I was 25 at the time and I hate to admit it I'm 50 now

This song has always hit me in the gut. Then I learned it was a true story, and it just hits that much harder knowing that.
Inspired by a true story that’s about it .
Yeah, it's inspired by a true story.
@naturalsearch4261@@musicmannsd actually it is more a romanticized imagination of a true event. The true story has a far less happy ending
Exactly that right there and he wrote the song before anyone discovered they had passed.
@@SherryShonedang he did?? It's crazy how close to the real story he got then.
Probably one of the most underrated songs in my opinion.
yep
I would agree!
I don't know about underrated. It is a really fun song, and it was top of the charts in early '98 or so, and had real staying power on the radio.
To me it's more about the nostalgia than anything else. But this song definitely had its long day in the limelight.
How is it underrated? Was on radio forever And look at all the plays?
Your opinion is spot on...a fabulous song.
I’m listening because of John Ballen’s story and the fact he actually sang the song. I remember it now! He is so awesome!
Discovering this in 2024 thanks to the missing person stories of MrBallen. This was made around 1998. At that time I was 8, living in Istanbul, was listening more to Turkish pop, Spice Girls, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Eminem. Number 1 TV had many tracks around the world, but never heard this one there. Glad to know this beautiful song exists and rest in peace Raymond en Lela. Heartbreaking story and song. Greetings from Brussels.
I was 8 when this came out. I don’t remember the story but I remember looking this song up years later and read about the sad story behind it. That’s so sad. When Mr Ballen covered it i immediately came back to this song!

I remember listening to this song on the World Chart Show and the two hosts would always give the backstory to the song telling how the old couple just took off to their deaths. I came back here after more than a decade since I heard the song as I was reminded of it on Mrballen. So sad😢😢. Love from Nigeria.
A cliff a couple and a 4 door sedan
Man this song is spring/summer '98 to an absolute T.
The 'retro' 60's nostalgia, the loose suits, the rockabilly influence, the sideburns. Such a narrow window of time captured so completely in a song and video.
I'm here because this song reminds me of my father. He would pick me up after high school late in the afternoon, and they would always play this song on a radio show I used to listened to. He would make a stop at the bakery, I he would buy several just baked baguettes to take home, he would let me eat the still hot inside soft part of it, just because he loved to spoil me. Now, he's not in a very good shape, we're living in different countries, and I miss him so much. I pray God he can recover soon. 🙏❣️
Wishing all the best to you both.
Thanks 😊
Thanks mrballen! Not only had i forgotten this song and needed to revisit it, but also did not know there was a story behind it

RIP Lela and Raymond Howard: the inspiration behind this song
Please...explain a bit further. I have loved this song for many a year. It's sentiments resonate with me. Too bad the video doesn't compute.
The song is about a newspaper article about an old couple that went on a trip and some how ended up on the side of the road dead. I think one had dementia and the other one was blind so the one with dementia drove. I think they were on there way to a fair in Texas.
@@michelleehle5433 It's sad but in a way really beatiful. They loved each other and their last moments were going on an exciting trip together.
@@iwasbornin62 truemusicfactswednesday.blogspot.com/2014/11/tmfw-62-they-wanted-highway.html Scalzo wrote the song before the story had concluded and the couple were found dead. He said it was "a romanticized take on what happened" and is not based on anything actually known. Still...it is nice to imagine these two elderly sweethearts setting aside all the unhappiness; the doctor's orders, and diagnoses, and pills to embark on one last road trip together. "You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere. They won't make it home but they really don't care. They wanted the highway; they're happier there today...today."

How the hell does this song only have 2 million views. Boy if we had CZcams in 90s this song would have over a billion
It's being sung in the EN-language. If it was sung or was subtitled in various languages, more people would watch it.
Not everyone follows CZcams
Because it’s not trending, that’s kinda how songs get a billion views xD by being new
Agree mate, this song was a hit back in the days

This song is like a masterclass on how to write a pop song. The verse in a minor key with the chorus in a major key. Just sounds so good.
Plus the chorus’s chord progression is a variation of the Pachabel’s Canon chord progression which is like the back bone of modern music
Sometimes remind me of Besame Mucho covered by The Beatles or Delilah by Tom Jones
@@raimundussili1901 Yes! I do Hear a Beatle influence!!!!
@@raimundussili1901 Yes! Delilah has very similar chord changes and melody 👍🏼
It's a basic Relative Minor progression. Anyone with a basic knowledge of music theory or the Circle of Fifths would understand. Used a lot in music and rock music especially.
The bass entrance at 0:52 when the low-pass filter drops off just hits so hard

Nailed it bro..... nostalgia
this is a true story abt 2 old people who got in there car and went off a cliff. they were very old
🎤💕
"[Verse 1]
They made up their minds and they started packing
And left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?
[Verse 2]
They drank up the wine and they got to talking
But now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down, they started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?
[Chorus]
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and grey
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home, but they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today
[Verse 3]
The children woke up, and they couldn't find them
They left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off and left it all behind 'em (Leavin' it all behind)
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?
[Chorus]
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and grey
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home, but they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today
[Instrumental Break]
[Chorus]
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and grey
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home, but they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today

Haven't heard this song since the 90's. Absolutely LOVED the key (and energy) change. This entire song is truly layered perfectly. Lyrics are purposely eerie.
This is brilliant because the major notes and upbeat tone convey a happy vibe, while the minor notes and lyrics tell a tragic tale
I can just cry, I can remember watching MTV (back when they played music videos) and when this kind of music was mainstream.
Nickleback killed music
@@bigboyroyp7356 I'm not saying they didn't but how did they kill it?
@@cespil-io7mj I’m not saying this either, but people say they found a “recipe” that made a song popular. Following that recipe put any song they wanted into top tens and radio playlists but it also made their songs sound similar. Other bands started trying to follow this trend and it shifted the direction of music industry out of “90s” and into the 2000’s.
That’s my understanding of it anyway.
This even made it to MTV latin America, otherwise I would have never listened to it.
thanks mrballen for bringing me back to this song!
This became the theme song for a group family vacation to Florida back in the 90’s. It always brings back those great summer beach memories when I hear it. “We just drove off and left it all behind us”
My brother is very much alive but this is the song that reminds me of him the most. I remember being about 12 years old and this was one of the songs he'd play when he had a girl over at our parents house. One time I asked him to play it for me on his absolutely incredible 52 disc changer radio/boombox/stereo with the most mind numbing bass that anyone could imagine. In a rare bonding moment between a 12 year old and a 17 year old older brother, we bonded over the coolest song I've ever heard in my life. I still get goose bumps and nearly cry thinking about that moment and this song. I will remember this song and the bond it made for the rest of my life. Well, I'm crying now thinking about that moment, thank you.
Badass, thank you for sharing this!

The closest, relevant point for me in the '90s is now twenty-two years ago. I was just thinking of what I was doing post-Labor Day back in '99. My girlfriend and I were going away for a week at the New Jersey shore and we lucked-into excellent summer-like weather. The calendar for that year and this year are exactly the same. Twenty-two years ago this week; the week of September 12th. '99 and '21.

Recently read what this song is about, the story of two elders that got lost and died together. So incredibly sad and touching. Will never be the same when hearing this song. 😢
When I first found that out like a year ago the song became so sad and disturbing but now listening and watching the video i find it so cool. Mainly because the family said how surprised and appreciative they were of it. Like I can’t watch this and not try to imagine how cool it must be and also comforting to see your loved ones spirits forever living through a chart topping rock song. And the feel of the song itself is just perfect. It talks about something tragic and disturbing but has the feel of a happy, uplifting song. Yeah it’s sad that they went out so tragically, but it’s not like their time wasn’t coming very soon considering their health issues and age, and honestly they lived a complete and fulfilling life and I like to think that it probably happened too quick for them to ever even suffer at all. Plus they were with each other. And I feel like the song iterates that perfectly. So yeah I just think it’s awesome because no doubt the family got a kick out of it and it will be told throughout their family for generations to come for sure. Sorry for the rant. Haven’t slept in over 24 hours so I’m a little out there at the moment 😅
@@NizRacingNY I completely agree Eric! It was beautiful to see their family being comforted through something so sad and terrible. Death is always tragic, but we can find comfort in that as well. RIP forever together like they left this earth 😢

Same. It is relatable for sure. Still it's fun too.
2021 Anyone? This song never gets old 🖤
Hi there 18-01-2.021 greetings from Santiago del Estero Argentina. Never gets old.
So many memories... the 90s rocked!
26.02.2021 🎼

Anyone listening in 2024?
This song will never get old. Really one of the most underrated song of 90's have no idea how many times i have listened this beauty
One of the best songs of the 1990s. It reached number one in the modern rock tracks 25 years ago this week. I was lucky to see the band in a free concert in the summer of 2017 and this song was the last one played that night.
Mr. B Thr second he started singing, I know that song. 😅 Bet it makes a big come back ❤ Cool to know it has a story. It's a sad one, but still cool.
I’ve been trying to find this song since I was young kid I’m 34. And yesterday I found it. I spent hours trying to remember it. I used to go downstairs to watch much music and this song was always on early in the morning. And I’ve spent years trying to remember it . Finally years later here I am lol
Same here it took 3 people to figure out a couple sentences to search the lyrics .
@@eric6242 lol I couldn’t even remember the lyrics all I could just barely remember the tune and a red car being in the music video! Glad you found it too lol
When you are a native Spanish speaker, when the internet wasn't a thing where you live until the '00s, you sang whatever you understood, but then you get access to the lyrics and your English improved... you are able to understand the lyrics and you felt sad as hell :(
I loved these guys, especially the drummer, I love the way he looks like Ringo Star in this video
In Matamoros a girl would hum songs to me--wanting me to recognise them and and tell her what the songs said.
"Please Don't Go,"
"Tears in Heaven," and
"I Will Survive."
That' sv right Rose ...!!...a native Spanish speaker born in Perú and currently living in Chile
One of the greatest songs in pop music history. And, with the story behind it, maybe even the greatest one. Thank you very much, Fastball guys.
Very nicely said , my friend
Before watching Mr ballen, i’d looked this song up at Spotify just a few weeks before, just for the sake of nostalgia. I’d listened to it over and over and over again. It’s so eerie that Mr ballen brought the story up only this week, and i was today years old when I learnt about the tragic story. I really really love this song, i remember it was in the late 90s when i first heard it on the radio, I instantly fell in love with it. Instantly!
Best song that year, and an all-time driving song.
True
This is a great song to listen to while driving but it literally is a song about tragic and terrible driving. The real story behind this song is about an elderly couple that are driving to their favorite yearly music festival, they lose their way. They are found hundreds of miles away crashed in a canyon and died. The lyrics "anyone can see the road that they walk on in paved in gold, its always summer they will never get cold, they'll never get hungry, they'll never get old and grey" describes them passed away and in heaven. The next part is the children looking for them.
it is !
@@drevil5546 Thankyou DrEvil...... Well said. Brings a whole new emotion to this song I had no idea existed.
DrEvil Yes and no. They were from Salado, Texas and were on their way to a Pioneer Festival in Temple, Texas. The wife had Alzheimer’s the husband was recovering from brain surgery. The wife had an episode while driving and drove off for hundreds of miles in the wrong direction. They were found two weeks later at the bottom of a ravine in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This song is a romanticized take on what happened to give the couple a happier ending. Instead of having an Alzheimer’s episode and driving to their death, they decided to get in the car and just drive. They left to go have fun like they did when they first met. Wherever they end up, they end up. RIP Lela and Raymond Howard
My mom and dad played this song when I was growing up … makes me miss them so much
I remember having this on CD when it came out. shouts to Mrballen for bringing them more listeners.
The story behind this song is bittersweet; one of my favorites.
This is the pinnacle of a pop chord progression. I'm obsessed with it, it's so good
Yup Canon in D is pretty much the back bone of modern Pop music
This is one of the phantom songs that pops in your head at 3am once every few year to drive you insane as you hum it trying to remember lyrics before it despises back into your brain and your stuck wondering if its even real or if you made it up.
3:49am
That is exactly why I am here!
It is actually based upon a true story
Heard it in Walmart while buying bread pans drove me crazy
Reading this comment at 3:13am #haunting
Ive witnessed way too many classics & Masterpieces when they first came out & most ppl didn't even know they existed wether it was movies or songs!!!! I feel old asf now & im only 36
Always liked this song, but now, thanks to MrBallen, I know who inspired its writing. RIP Lela and Raymond!
They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going
Without ever knowing the way?
They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down They started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?
Anyone could see
The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll Never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows
Wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today, today
The children woke up
And they couldn't find 'em
They left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off
And left it all behind them
But where were they going
Without ever knowing the way?
Anyone could see
The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows
Wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today, today
Anyone could see
The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows
Wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today, today

@lana lake this is the way
I was almost 40 year's old when this song hit but as an aging baby boomer I can recognize a very cool song when I hear one. These dudes had that 60s/70s thing going on
Same here, and I agree. I was 38 when it came out. My (then) wife, daughter, and I jammed to this on the way to the Tulsa 4th of July celebration in '98.
Finally nice to see someone else someone else agree with me on this. I missed these guys the first time around, but some of it still leaked through, and I thought this and "Out of My Head" were actual oldies.
I've always loved this song. Just didn't know the backstory until MrBallen talked about it. 😭
MTV Classics and 120 Minutes preserve songs like this.
This song evoked such creepy imagery in my mind as a kid in the ‘90s. The idea of the children waking up to their parents just leaving them as they escape to some hidden paradise is just such an epicly creepy vibe to me.
Nailed it on the head lol
unfortunately, the parents were escaping to a ditch on the highway... the story is so sad
The first time I heard this song back in the 90s, I thought it was about cultists who deliberately ran off without their kids. Then the real story came out
Mr. Ballen brought me here. Heard this song for years on the radio as a teenager. No idea about the depth behind it. Thanks again Mr. Ballen. Cheers
Same here
Thank you MrBALLEN for bringing me here knowing the real meaning behind this song... ❤
The most 60s song of the 90s.
Actually this is the most late 90's music video than anything made in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Disagree
This song is Bésame Mucho actually
@@brendahoward3540 I mean it even has a riff kinda inspired from Secret Agent Man tho doesn’t it
@@brendahoward3540 It does have a 60s flavor to it. The way they're dressed, and those nostalgic instruments looks like that era. I was born in the 60s.
This is one of my favorite choruses of any songs ever
I heard the sad meaning behind this song is the Howard’s. How they went off in their camper and never came home. They were found days later 400 miles from home at the bottom of a ravine in their camper. Mrs. Howard suffered from Alzheimer’s and Mr Howard had suffered from a brain injury, but still went off in their camper for the trip of a lifetime. They got lost and ended up where they did. So very sad.
It is very sad, Alzheimer's is torturous for the person afflicted and their family. The Howard's were actually on their way to a music festival 15 miles from their home but Lela obviously got lost. They weren't in a camper but in their Oldsmobile. She was found outside of the car holding her purse and keys. Raymond was still in the passenger seat. They think she got out of the car to get her husband out, but didn't make it and fell over and passed away because of her injuries.
This was my childhood first song and all, loved it. Mr ballen blew my little mind. My life song is an old people mystery. The music makes so much sense when he jumps into off the building
Happy 20th Anniversary to All The Pain Money Can Buy! The first album I ever bought when I was 11 years old.
That was 20 years ago?!? DAMN
I'm almost 65 and I love this song. Wishful thinking maybe.
Except this song is about killing yourself and leaving your children behind. Unless that's what you're into. I'm not here to judge.
Not really about killing yourself. It is about an elderly couple each with cognitive/memory retention issues who just up and left home. They were subsequently found dead via an acci9dent.@@VapidToast
Yeah you dont look that age
@@joecrew8020 They were legit from my hometown, Salado, Texas. This happened a few years after I graduated HS. Didn't know anything thing of them, which is surprising given how small Salado was back then
💕💕💕👋
Mr. Ballen has the voice of an angel.
