  • An experiment with a silicone mat as a monoprinting surface vs the usual gel plate surface that I always use. It yields interesting but disappointing results as you will see!

    When gel or other may is sticking to the paper, it's often easier to turn it upside down and gently curl the mat away from the paper. Amazing huge print!!

    Hello Fulton, I had wondered how a silicone mat would work. Thanks for showing us. Also, beautiful ghost print. Another idea I found when I searched, “alternatives to Gelli plates”, was to use a smooth, garden kneeling pad from a discount store. I haven’t gotten one yet, but thought I’d mention it. Thank you for calming, meditative, informative and very creative videos. ❤

    Thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. I think if you want to do another comparison video between the gel plate and the sicilon, next time use a sicilon banking sheet, the kind you'd use to line a cookie sheet.
    It's more rubbery and pliable and has more "give".

I ask because I don’t always have time to watch a 30:00 video, so I changed the speed of this one to 1.5 faster than normal and it’s perfect for impatient viewers like me! I Enjoyed the video it is very informative 👍🏼🤩, thank you ! If you turn your silicone matt over & use the shiny side I have heard that it works a little better than the Matt side for this technique, although I really liked the images that you pulled from it. As the Matt side definitely achieved a cool look what with the grainy textures ect. I don’t think you can beat a gelli plate but it is always good to have other ways to add interest to pieces & a silicone Matt is a very handy & versatile item to have, they really come in so handy. 😊

    The famous "what if.."of an artist. I think the greatest difference between the two plates is that the silliconemat does not have the mineral oil in it that takes care of the fact that the paint is sort of rejected off the surface somewhat and can be picked up . Nice experiment.

    Silicone is a persnickety animal sometimes. especially Platinum when curing. Mention even the word Latex under your breath in the same room and it might decide not to cure lol. *I've heard a patcher for Immortal Masks couldn't get her patches to stick, they traced it down to her makeup inhibiting the stuff. As a general rule, nothing sticks to silicone, except more/other silicone. I'm really surprised you were able to spread the paint as great as you did, as most acrylics will just more or less bead up on silicone. The more runny craft paints sure do. But, a silicone mat, if it's what you have, can still get some background printed paper for collage so there is that. You could also try off loading your brayers onto that mat, if you have a place it can sit while the paints and stuff you put onto it can dry. Even last paint dregs slightly watered and mixed/swirled in patterns (scribbles lol) to make acrylic skins. They should peal right off. Might wanna test that tho on a small corner of that mat before committing to a large area lol. Then you can cut or tear those for collage elements. They should glue down with MP with no problem. In a pinch I've even used freezer paper over cardboard and a piece of flat packaging styrofoam for some printed papers. It's all good lol :)

    I was disappointed that you didn't try the glossy side of the silicone mat to see if it would give you a more satisfying result. You didn't show the original print that you pulled from the silicone long enough for us to evaluate it, but it seemed to have some nice dendritic patterning all over it. I would have liked a longer look.
    Also, one feature of commercial gel plates is that they never dry out. which is why paint will not stick to them. They are also completely synthetic and not made with organic materials like homemade gel plates which is why they last so long and homemade plates eventually get moldy.

    • @artwhisperer88
      @artwhisperer88  Před rokem +3

      Thanks for you insight Paul! I was quite pessimistic about this experiment as I know its hard to beat the qualities of a well manufactured gel plate. The dendritic textures of the silicone sheet print can serve as collage elements in another artwork, so it won't go to waste.

    • @paulfoote7869
      @paulfoote7869 Před rokem +3

      @@artwhisperer88 In my own work using collage, I've found that trying to collage thick papers is difficult. Personally, I think it will make a great background for one of your layered prints. And if you think getting colors down on top of it might be difficult you can print the areas in a lighter opaque color first and then without changing the plate or placement of your stencils reprint your desired color on top of the lighter opaque areas you just put down. Your registration system is good enough to do that with pretty good accuracy which is another technique I have enjoyed in your videos.

    Would you not get a better print by using a simple printing baran? You can pick a simple plastic one of traditional bamboo padded one I favour for a few ££..If your using acrylic paint why not lightly mist water over your second layer of ink when reusing the first print & it should stop the paper sticking like this.If using acrylics it's best working quicker or with a bit of regarding medium to slow the drying down & keeping the paint ' open' to be able to inscribe into to take a print..Only time I.let my ink really dry off is when using oil based block printing ink & I definitely use a baran or burnish with the back of a big spoon to get more definition to my print ! There's no right or wrong way to work of course ...I' m 55 & have been printing since the late 70 ' s & experiment with low tech art techniques recycling household objects to create print s or backgrounds to paint over xx

    Gelli is Rolls Royce surface for a reason.
    The alternative surface experiment is interesting.
    I have seen an interesting CZcams project using agar agar, a type of seaweed alternative to gelatine that made a sensitive home made gelli plate and less in need of refrigeration than gelatine base.
    It takes quite a bit of effort, especially to get a smooth top surface.
    Many would prefer a set and forget commercial gelli, I suspect.

      With all due respect, I don't see the point in doing that. A gelli plate is specifically designed and manufactured as a printing tool. It is far superior to a silicone sheet, which is really meant to be a liner for your work table. If you can afford a gelli plate you should buy it instead of making do with a silicone sheet. The purpose of my video is to provide low cost alternatives, not substitutions.
