No we don’t have to tell Eric about the two transmissions we installed, I’m sure it’s not related....
Cop: “Do you have any idea how fast you were going?”
Driver: “120?”
Cop: “3.”
Yeah, I wonder how that kind of conversation would go...
Cop: "Sir, I clocked you at 42mph in a 35mph zone."
Driver: "Oh, I thought I was doing 120mph"

There's an easy fix for this Eric pull out the dash cluster take it apart and cross out mph and just put km/h instead, problem fixed.
is this the same speedometer they used in the fast and the furious? 40mph = 120mph??
No no no....they use a speedometer that 40=120, with a 22 speed transmission, and a 67 mile long airstrip...
Hein-Motorsports Designs if that airport was real it would be well fucking over 100 miles

Fun fact: Delorean speedometers only go up to 85mph. Back To The Future had to make a custom 95mph speedometer for the movie.
Of course he would complain. I saw his odometer rolling over at 3x the speed. Rapid depreciation.

Typical customer thinks that the less information they give you the cheaper the repair will be!
grant wright you are definitely in the car repair business sir. That’s so true and yet it has the opposite effect. Spend all this time trying to diagnose a problem to later find out some previously withheld information. I don’t understand it.
Maybe they only wanted that one thing fixed
Love your videos Eric. Just had surgery on my arm yesterday gonna binge watch all of them for two weeks! I've been a mechanic for 14 years and I always learn something new watching you work. You're an inspiration for me. Thanks for the vids keep up the good work.
I thought the vehicle speed sensor is usually mounted on the output shaft of the t-case. But no...Ford had to go and reinvent the wheel AS USUAL hahaha! Great vid Eric :)
On the manual trans manual t case it is. In this case being all electronic it runs off bus inputs and the trans oss sensor :)
That's par for the course, Ivan! :D
I love when the reinvented wheel doesn't work as well as the original!! Ha Ha
I've got a 94 Ranger and MY only complaint is the speedometer is all over the place. About 10-15 mph slow on the low side and then slaps the peg past 85 before I get to 70. Sometimes it stays buried, sometimes it jumps back and forth.
Seems to be a common problem from what I see online. I just ignore it. Hard to find in a junkyard, only 93-94 will interchange.
Being a jeeper that uses 4LO occasionally I recognized that quick shift pattern and screaming gears immediately! Ouch. Telling the truth good, but Embarrassment is a cruel lady.
probably the reason to transfer case ran empty of oil is they thought the oil came from the transmission into the tranfer case. Many people think that.. Eveyone needs to check the oil level in the transfer case which is separate from the transmission. And its not just fords either..
I find it hard to believe that anyone with the skillset to change a transmission wouldn't know that the TC needs to be filled with oil, but...
Years ago I drove a customers Volvo 940 and the tach operated perfectly backwards... 7k was max number, it idled around 6 and went down perfectly as the engine revved up. It was funny as he'll to me, I bet the customer probably didn't even know it was wrong.
Hah, those 940 tachs... I used to have one that did 80km/h on the speedo while standing still, went to 0 and then started shaking up once moving, the actual speed was the average of the 30-40km/h range the needle was shaking between. It also had start-stop: below 2000rpm the needle just went to zero, above 2k it was accurate.
Gitter is something that looks great on a kids art project but terrifying in a transfer case.

Thanks Eric and keep up the excelent work!
Never having dealt with 4wd I find these videos very informative. Thanks Dr. O!
Never a dull video from SMA!
Do you get the feeling that the symptoms that caused them to change the transmission were from the transfer case all along?
Hard to say...
My guess is the t case might've been drained while swapping transmissions ..........wouldnt be the first time I saw it or the last.
It's gotta bug you after awhile, fixing other shops mistakes, finishing other people's repairs, the costumer could have saved everyone some time and just spilled the beans in the first place, great video
No, it pays my bills and gives me movies :)
Second. Those transfer case changer motors always look like a re-purposed wiper motor to me.
Honestly when I saw mg first one I thought the client did repurpose one til I busted with the epic book of parts.
It’s a motor, how different are they supposed to look? They’re basically made the same way regardless of application.
I have not thought about that. This was actually very informative! Great Video!
Better video than you think. It was interesting to see how you diagnosed that without the customer confession.
When you said it wasn't one of your best videos, for me it was. I learned a lot.
I really like anything to do with 4-wd videos, very interesting watching you work on them.

I saw the transfer case video it was good .I agree with you when people come in to a shop they need to tell you the truth about what happen to there automobiles it could save them some time and money thanks eric o.
Never stops to amaze me that people do stuff like this as you say if they could put a trans in and know they killed the transfer case why the hell are they dragging somebody else in to their deal.
They like blowing money, I guess.
That was my thinking too, makes no sense.
With all the work they put into it, could be they were just tired of messing with it. /just my take

Awesome video Eric O. Not sure the similarities of a Ford transfer case to a GM np261 but I rebuilt my np261 by watching your video. Thank you for that I don't think I ever said Thank you and in that video comments.
Good job! Thank you for making this video. However, I'm still intrigued by HOW the PCM process the signal for MPH. I had the exact same problem with a 2007 Ford Expedition. I though it was the VSS inside the transmission. But your video make me change direction after three hours of diagnoses.
I wish customers would just be honest.
I had a guy tow his car in and hand me the float from the carburetor. He said "it just fell out."
Obviously he tried to pull it apart and wrecked everything. ☺
Dude, can you please make a video where you make something look at least a little difficult to fix/figure out? You know, for us regular people...lol.
Another great one and really appreciate the time you take to put these out.

My Dad had an old Ranger 2.3 4 banger. He never drove it over 45. One day I borrowed it and found the carpet was stuffed up under the gas pedal. Now I got it to do 60 ha ha.
Funny you say that I once used to manage a fleet of recovery trucks and had a driver complain his truck had no power and it was struggling to do 50 flat out, So I take it out for a quick test drive and got a suspision the turbo isn't working but before I booked it in at the garage I noticed this driver had 3 floor mats piled on top of each other and they were blocking the pedal....... Threw out the pile of mats and it drove great.
I bought a 68 Cougar that would max out out at 50. Someone adjusted the throttle linkage so the butterfly would only open about halfway. Readjusted the linkage and could get 50 in first. First time I drive it fast I knocked all the carbon loose, and the car ran like crap. Took it out on the interstate and ran it flat out for twenty miles. It purred like a kitten after that.
Not a truck, but I had a car years ago that had a floor mat that liked to travel forward. I got into the habit of "scuffing" it back into place whenever I drove it. I notice now with the cars I've had that they usually have "hooks" in the floors where the mat is locked into. Very handy.
You'll NEVER get the whole story. I actually had someone complain once that the radio wouldn't turn up high enough anymore. Rear wheel bearing making as much noise as I have ever heard one make that did still roll....
That's called the "turn the radio up and you won't hear the engine screaming in pain" maneuver. Heard of people doing that . . . never understood it.
You should do a toolbox tour, unless you already have. I couldn't find one though. Keep up the awesome videos!
Ouch! In the words of Bill Engvall " here's your sign" lol
You should totally do a transfer case rebuild video on a Land Rover Freelander. I bought some time on the job so I will wait till you give it the beans. 3 months max though. I got bills to pay.
Love it when you said @7:20 " we got the real story from the cousin as far as what really happened" lol
Thanks for the video. I don't see to many f150 but the speed range is interesting to know if it comes up.
Yeah it's always nice to get all the info from customer right of way it makes much easier to diagnois
I'm just an old mechanic from years ago now retired but do they refer to that motor as a servo? Just wondering if the servo motor itself wasn't engaging four-wheel drive all the way and was in between that's how it got locked up and shredded everything the pieces?
Good to see Mrs O!!!!
September here in ND as I watch this. Uggggh. That snow reminds me that it is just around the corner here. :(

I use 2 low in my Ford truck all the time! Easier to maneuver trailers with the manual transmission . Granted I do it on purpose.
Haven't watched the whole video yet. I have seen this before my guess is it has the wrong year / wrong year drum installed in the transmission. Love your videos Eric O keep up the great work
Ok I was wrong. Next time I will set up and watch the whole video lol. That's why I love your channel I always learn something new even though I have been a master technician for the last 10 years
I thought sensor at first before seeing/hearing it run, the fast rev, jerky shifts and looking like it had 1000+ ft.lbs. torque was enough to figure stuck in low and seeming to not be in 4wd was odd. the obliterated t-case explains it all :)
Lol I was just about to comment on the transfer case screaming
oh how i wish you could walk into a mechanic and get the same service this guy gives... here in Australia, you'll go for a wheel alignmet and somehow found out your head gaskets blown and you need a new tailshaft
Good find
Shiny! Thanks for the video.
Thank you Eric. Good job. Anybody know of videos for 2012 Chevy Malibu steering torque sensor testing. The wiring diagrams show it's a two wire sensor. But service information doesn't say what the Vref should be, nor what type of signal voltage during turning. Wiring is different than the older 2010 which had four wires. Thank you
Do as you're told Mr. O. When you do, you better give it full beans!
Always a treat to see the beautiful Mrs. O!
So did it have the same effect on the odometer or was it covered up by coincidence? Yep two transmissions installed and now the rear main seal is leaking. should I take it back to aamco again and pay to pull the transmission again.
You two are awesome. Great couple.
Hey Eric! is that the MAC tools cordless ratchet? If so could you please make a tool time video?
First time I've ever seen a Ford go over 50 without throwing a rod
I always go over 50 in my Ford it hasn't thrown a rod yet just waiting for the day it does😂

Hi, Is it hard to rebuild the transfer case? or its just easier to buy a new one?
interesting problem this go around Eric, i guess some folks feel that giving part of the story is somehow gonna mean ya will wave a magic wand at it and alaka kazam you'll fix the problem... just like ya said Eric. I did see the glitter coming out in that fluid as you were showing it. per usual you targeted in on the real problem.
hope your New Year is going good.

Great video thanks brother. I would like to thank they have there own shop why would they not check the transfer case oil when servicing the truck. Common sense goes a long way you would check the axle level front and rear. I sense that it keep getting the quickie. Great video thanks brother keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again
That'd be the first thing a Ford owner (or someone working on a Ford should do) Sense the seal between the transfer case and transmission always likes to fail, usually the trans gets low and starts to slip...because all the fluid is in the transfer case! (I drive a '94 Bronco. It has this problem. I did a dump and fill on the transfer case and she was almost full to the brim!! Pulled the upper fill plug and got about a quart out the fill plug. Now unless someone tip'ed the old girl in her nose to refill......)
I see they did the old hack and slash on the exhaust to put in the transmissions 🤣
I think thats actually factory like that at that point of exhaust
@@mph5896 no it's not. The y pipe and cats are all one piece. The sliced it in half to make it easier to take out. Trust me I know these trucks like the back of my hand. I work on them everyday.
The one I had was a 2007. That design is spliced in at that point. I looked up the earlier trucks and looks like its one piece, but when you buy a new OEM one its sold as 2.
Most cars I see up on a ramp have one piece OE exhaust systems from the factory. When you get a replacement in they tend to be multiple parts, perhaps it's on its second exhaust system.
Wow Eric, you need to slow down going through town there. Lol
Oh, used to dread interrogating Customers, then get 2nd & 3rd hand anecdotes from "friends that helped work on it". Nope- you did the right thing- cause the minute you touch it- you bought it.

I have an 03 ford 5.4/4x4 expedition, I swap the transmission out of 04 expedition 5.4/4x4 now I'm having the same issue with the speedometer but my shuts off when it gets to 100mph (30 mph). Please help me out with information, thanks
Also the speedometer problem wasn't happening with the original transmission started after I swapped
