One day we should have a discussion on how Degrassi neglected their black characters. They could have done soo much with Tiny and Shay's storylines.

@@MrBlockparty57 I personally feel like Shay piggy backed off of the white counterparts' story lines. Just like (Marisol, Shantay, Tiny, and Hazel.) I feel like the only "black characters" that had semi good storylines were obviously Jimmy and Liberty. I would also like to point out the Asian characters were done dirty as well. Don't me wrong I love Degrassi, but I can't help but to feel that POC's were kind off tossed to the side in a way.
@Gloriellee X Yeah, I agree with you it may have been a short stick, but it was still something lol. I feel like after Connor's Asperger and him stealing girls' underwear they kind of made him a side character. Dave had some pretty decent storyline moments but just like Connor he kind of became a side character. I'm gonna be honest I don't really remember Chris all that much but yeah, he was sprinkled here and there just like that other black guy (I don't remember his name)
Maya was 100% right to tell Mr. Simpson about Tristan and Yates, but I feel like Tristan gets too much hate for his reaction. Tristan never really understood that he was being groomed, so it makes sense for him to be extremely upset and not handle the news well. Obviously, he shouldn't have lashed out at Maya like that, but once again, he was groomed, so it makes sense that his anger was misplaced.
i think the way she did it was wrong, but i am glad she did it. But agreed, of course he'll be upset, he is a child and was manipulated. And they weren't on good terms anyways, so it comes off even worse that she said it.

Idk if it was because he was a gay teen and it was hard for him to find a relationship like that but most of the time it was like I like you do you like me? Oh, you like my friend? Yeah it's too bad that Darcy never came back in the later later seasons because that is Claire's sister and Claire was pretty much the main protagonist in the later part of Degrassi after Emma left the show

@@joshshipp2979 totally agreed! I know Shenae Grimes left for the 90210 reboot and become a big actress in the US like Nina Dobrev, but....she couldn't pop back in even once? Not when Clare had cancer or was pregnant or anything? Not when her parents divorced and Clare felt like she wasn't wanted in either house? It's just crazy.
What's more, if the actress really COULDN'T or refused to come back, they couldn't sometimes write into the script that Clare just talked to her on the phone or got back from visiting her or something??
@@melaniemitchell9419 oh yeah I know I think Darcy was mentioned again in season 10 whenever Claire said that Darcy is gone after their parents are divorced and stuff like after TNG Darcy didn't come back I know she was on the show from season 4 through season 8 though and after that she left but it would be been nice to see her again in between seasons 10-14 part of the series but she wasn't mentioned again much it was only Claire and her mom in the show and of course her mom married Jake's dad so Claire and Jake were step-siblings like in season 11 part two!

It’s crazy how Craig was meant to be the first bisexual male character on the show but they trashed the idea. I think they knew it was ahead of its time. Then Peter was meant to be and they canned that. Then they finally graced us with Miles Hollingsworth. I think they did the right thing.
Making Craig bisexual would have been great. Miles' story felt too much like Paige's.
@@Aster_Risk I disagree but I feel you. I felt like Miles bisexuality is far more realistic than Paige’s storyline. Like it didn’t really follow through for me. It felt rushed since her character was in a transitional period. They were able to take their time with Miles and build it into his overall identity as a character. Paige’s bisexual storyline felt like a phase and she’s actually my favorite female character of TNG. I would have LOVED a bisexual Craig because he is a lover boy in general. Mixing that with bipolar disorder would’ve turned him up even more.

I feel like they were trying to please the stations that TNG aired on by keeping the innocence. That’s why I said “Ahead of its time” bc now the bolder, the better.
Maya has one of the most interesting character arcs of the whole series. I love the choices made for her reactions after Cam's death, as non-typical grief responses are so common yet so... stigmatized? Looked down on? Definitely not shown on TV very often?
I do too! Its not seen often in other shows and it is a realistic reaction for her character. Also other than that, she hated being fake cared too by the people around her like tori. In general i thnk maya is one of the best written characters in the whole show
I agree so much. I know people generally dislike Next Class, but Maya's arc in S3 was so well done - coming from someone who has attempted several times in my life. I think Maya has a lot of nuance to her.
Maya was not only one of the best written characters on new class but overall of the show. The way they allowed her character to slowly change and grow and truly show how trauma can change a person even if you don’t see it. Also esme ate up the last few seasons showing how people trauma can be triggered!
I think Maya is definitely one of my favorite people in the entire Degrassi universe because her character arc is nuanced and believable-especially compared to the other Next Class characters. The way her struggles with mental health evolved through different experiences during her adolescence was depicted with so much care.
Her blow up after Cam died was so sad and heartbreaking. She loved Cam but couldn’t seem to understand Cam. Cam was closed off due to bullying, pressure and trying to balance Maya and Hockey. So of course he couldn’t open up without feeling guilty for telling her he’s struggling. So I think both had pretty tragic backstories surrounding Cam’s Suicide.

I know they knew Cam's storyline from the very beginning and it was always going to end that way but it hurts me to this day. I adored him so so much. Eli being the one to find him has always been so perfect to me though because it so easily could've been him in that spot earlier on in the show.
Maya was absolutely 100% right to tell Principal Simpson that one of his teachers was grooming and statutory r*p*ng a student. It is later revealed in the episode where Miles and Tristan first kiss that Mr. Yates had also attempted to assault other students (Winston says so). She saved other kids from being victimised by Yates, and Tristan from being further victimised as well. Maya is often perceived as "nosy" and "too much" by all the characters in-universe but this behaviour of helping people even when they don't want it is a clear symptom of dating someone who unalived himself - as you said, she tries desperately to save everyone from themselves from this point on (Miles, Zig, Tristan, etc) because she felt that she could have done more to save Cam. She and Miles are my two favourite characters of this generation of Degrassi, full stop; They are both complex and well-written, morally grey, and purely human characters - a writing strength on Degrassi that flourished in early TNG which, to be honest, was a bit lost in later seasons (in my opinion at least - unpopular opinion: it got better in Next Class than seasons 13 and 14, but never reached the same level).
I think people sleep on Next Class it’s far better than 13 and 14 and since the seasons aren’t bloated anymore the characters actually develop in a way that’s reminiscent of the first 4 seasons of TNG.

I actually enjoyed Maya in the last two seasons of Next Class. It really showed how much the bus crash affected her, the good and bad. And I don't know, it kinda felt like she grew up a bit, too?

@Gloriellee X the bus crash actually happens at the end of season 2 and effects her for all of season 3 and she still has after effects from the trauma in season 4 that is all traced back to the bus crash. So you’re both right.

Also, a lot of people hate Maya but I never understood why. I have the biggest soft spot for her. Nobody ever talks about how nasty Zoe was to her, how horrible of a friend Tristan was, how Cam's death affected her, and how Zig & Miles both were trash. 😭 I was just happy to see her finally gain some peace on the last season so everyone could stop messing with her.

As someone who has been in a situation like that (not a teacher but an adult coworker while I was 15) I wish I had Maya as a friend back then. When you’re young and an adult is grooming you, a lot of times you don’t realize how bad it is until much later. Will forever love Maya for telling!!!!!
you are so real for this. The things you say, especially about Maya are things I’ve been waiting for other people to bring up instead of just saying “ugh I hate Maya”. Her reaction to Cam’s suicide was so honest to me, like TV shows and movies have this like immediate drama following a character death or just some sweet closure scene, like the emotions express themselves that easily. With Maya, the non-responsiveness is exactly how I was when someone close to me died. It makes her so relatable and the entire grieving process more authentic to my own experience with grief than most of what i see. She was so young too, and the writers do a good job of writing in the long term effects of cam’s death into her relationships and her own mental health.
Maya was one of the best characters in season 11-12 her early teen awkward phase was so week done. But she gets annoying after that
I think her reaction is valid and honestly idk how i would react in the situation. Probably not like that, but she’s a teenager and never envisioned herself as the girl with a dead boyfriend. I think people who hate on her usually predict how they’d act in the situation but truth is no one would truly know, until faced with the situation.

Maya was completely in the right for reporting the relationship between Tristan and Mr Yates. It crosses every single line, and this relationship was a culmination of every insecurity Tristan had about himself and his ability to find love. This teacher has clearly done this before and knows how to manipulate younger students. In several '90s movies featuring a gay male teenage protagonist, he would have his first sexual encounter somewhere taboo like a street corner or with an adult with authority; however, this show was written in another time and could have had a lot more to say, like the trauma Tristan must have experienced after the fact. Nuance wasn't needed for the story, because Tristan wasn't operating pragmatically.
On the other hand, Tristan's first sexual experiences do mirror a lot of gay teens', mine included
Ok while I do agree with where I stand that season 1-7 is the best, I honestly did forget how really intense these later seasons of degrassi were, great video as always!

i really wish cam got more story :( I wish he at least lasted a season. He was such a great character. I understand why they ended him that way and i am glad that the storyline happened, but i wish he was more than maya's boyfriend and maybe they did a bit more with him before they killed him. He remains one of my favorite characters in the show. Can't wait for the next video, I actually liked a lot of the final cast, even if they annoy me a bit.

Miles is the best character in this class his family sucked and always just brushed him off whenever he tried to explain his dad’s abusive behavior and other things he was going through.
I always knew Winston and Miles are really good friends even if it's offscreen but I never once realized that Lola in a Play is something both he and Miles have in common.
Maya at the end of next class is my favorite because I’ve been going through a very similar mental spot lately and her ptsd and depression is so relatable. Her od had my crying so fuckinh hard I felt her so much. She means so much to me

It wasn't Zig's fault, he was just the last person to set him off, Dallas was the main contributor he was constantly on Cam forcing him to interact and play sports and was on him when ever he slipped up. Dallas was their coach but he was so uncomfortably controlling with Cam. Most times cam had to listen to Dallas and Shut up. Cam tried to voice his concerns but Dallas constantly bullied him and shut him down. Tristan was also a contributor he instigated the situation with Zig and Maya and got Cam all riled up against Zig. Zig was angry and pissed how the school easily let him back and maya forgave him. Zig just spoke out of pure anger. But if one person has to take the blame for this it's 100% dallas.
31:34 Off the bat, absolutely Maya should have told Mr. Simpson about Tristan. Recently a docuseries about teacher student intimate relationships premiered on Hulu called “Keep It Between Us” and it shows how these teachers who may be “younger” have predatory and disgustingly s*xual behavior towards children and that’s what Mr. Yates did. While it was gradual, he still pretty early on invited Tristan to his personal home with intentions of s*xual acts to happen. Children/ minors cannot consent to adults because they aren’t yet aware of how predatory and inappropriate this behavior is but the adults always know how inappropriate it is to hold power over these children. I honestly would have been upset if Maya never said anything or if anyone didn’t say anything. I get Tristan is mad because he felt like he didn’t have anyone who liked him genuinely (unfortunately this happens often in the gay community) but this situation could have gotten so much worse if Maya didn’t intervene and he would have had trauma he would have had to deal with in his adult life. Like I know it’s just a show but this happens too often in real life and it is so unsettling. To be honest, grooming in media is often shown as aggressive or scary when in reality it’s people getting others to trust them over time, validating them, isolating them slowly by saying they’re the only ones who care or who sees the real them before they start their predatory behavior and start slowly guilt tripping their “prey” into inappropriate, non consensual acts with them.
In short, Maya was absolutely correct for saying something.
Love these videos, you put so much work into them! Cam and Maya were so cute together and they were probably my favourites from this class. I think Maya absolutely did the right thing by telling Simpson about Yates. He was a predator and she was protecting her friend. Tristan was an awful friend to her.

There is not enough videos/reaction or reviews of this franchise. I started watching it at the ending episodes of season 11. Saw degrassi Manhattan, loved spinner he became my all time male favorite character, while Manny was for females.

Great video I’ve actually watched all your Degrassi videos and I love that your talking about the show and the characters. I was wondering if you’d make or if you’re making a video talking about some of the forgotten and left behind characters from Next Class that we didn’t get to see graduate like Lola, Shay, Baaz, Yael, Esme, Hunter, Vijay, Radha, Saad, and Frankie due to shows cancellation. I think some of those characters deserve to be talked about and I’d like to know if you would’ve been interested in seeing in of those characters stories continued? Keep up the awesome work.

Telling on Mr.Yates was very reasonable. Tris could get mad and stay mad. Desperation ain’t cute
It's hard to choose a favourite there are so many good characters but I will say this I HATE Tristan(long rant ahead) he was the worst most horrible character Degraassi ever created. I blame the writers for not showing any growth with him. He is sassy and narcissistic from the get go he only really cares about him self and his needs. When he was introduced he tried with Bianca whom immediately shut him down. He was constantly jealous of Tori and Zig that he tried to break them apart. Then season 12 he pretended to be maya and catfished cam which was extremely creepy. He's constantly about finding his true love and falling in love but he shows little to no respect for his fellow human beings it's disgusting. The start of S13 he ditches maya for because he's on a fanboy high when he sees Zoey, Maya the same friend whose supported him and been there for him through thick an thin. If I were maya I would've dropped his ass so hard (to be honest I wouldn't even have been friends with him in the first place). Maya was right to talk to simpson but as much as I hate Tristan with all my power I understand his over reaction. Then there is his relationship with Miles who was clearly confused he wasn't sure if he was into guys or girls but Tristan took advantage of that because his feelings for Miles was much more important to him than helping miles figure him self out. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT when Miles lost his shit on Tristan during that intervention episode. Tristan deserved it 100%. Then when Tristan gave that sorry speech to miles about using people, OMG TRISTAN SIT YOUR ASS DOWN NOW! Tristan is the definition of a user he constantly uses his friends for his own benefit. I was so angry when they put miles with Tristan again. Miles deserved so much better than that worthless piece of trash. Miles and Maya should have been end game both of them are so good for each other especially Maya she is a great influence on miles.Tristan should have died on that bus crash it would have been the perfect ending for a worthless character. It's solely the writers fault they never cared to develop tristan outside of "Me me all a me and my love interests" . We briefly got to see his caring side but it was so brief the writers could have pulled a Holly J and have him grow into a better individual. Problem is after a certain point Degrassi only cared about introducing an endless amount of new characters versus developing the existing ones. Sorry for this long ass comment but I had to voice my extreme hate for tristan (it took everything out of me not to use swears LOL)
I found him so irritating I missed the last episode where they show the bus crash and I just jumped to season 3 and I was like I really hate his character and they just show him in the hospital..oh boy what did I miss hehe
My favorites is Zig and Mya they had the most development in my opinion. Plus I love them as a couple.

What made me mad with Maya. She couldn't handle Cam and Miles troubles. But she broke her neck for Zig and he was just as damage as the other two.

I just watched them graduate and I have to disagree with you and say that Maya was one of the best parts of Next Class 3 and 4. I didn’t really care for her until then. After seeing what they do with her arc, I say she is one of the best written characters in the whole show.
And ZOE. What a transformation
These degrassi next class classes are not as my favorite but its still cool 😎I love all of the different degrassi shows in general they came a long way

omg i LOVED dark-ish maya in her last season, i found it much more entretaining than the bubbly happily ever after from other characters even when they're in touble because "everything will be alright". well maybe it won't how about that. i feel like that's what they tried with her, and even though her more promosing final scenes felt like a pretty natural development, i wish we had seen more of the side of her that was not afraid to be bleak
