  • The last couple of years have been huge for Jason Isbell. The Alabama-born singer-songwriter’s latest album Weathervanes won the Grammy for Best Americana album this year. He also snagged a role in Martin Scorsese's film, Killers Of The Flower Moon, which is up for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars.
There was also a critically acclaimed HBO documentary released last year about the making of Isbell’s previous album with the 400 Unit, Reunions, that put his personal life on full display.
On today’s episode I talk to Jason Isbell about his exhilarating experience filming Killers of the Flower Moon and how he prepared to act in scenes opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (heads up-there are some major spoilers in this conversation). Jason also contemplates how he will write about the dissolution of his marriage, and why he struggles to write a balls-out rock song.

    ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Brilliant artist. He's so open and honest. I find him refreshing and so down to earth. Just a good 'ol boy, as my pops would say. My dad was from Tennessee.😊

So much respect for Jason Isbell. His music makes me feel again after years of numbness. Incredible level of true talent wrapped up in raw emotion.

At his best, Ryan Adams is a brilliant songwriter, but he lacks the consistency that Jason Isbell has had so far.

Jason Isbell is the greatest songwriter of his generation, and I feel like he still has some amazing music to come over the next few decades.. ❤❤

‘The People with the armor on should go to the front of the line because they have the armor’ Exactly Jason. Yes! There is a reason we didn’t learn about this story - or the Tulsa massacre in 6th grade. That was intentional. So much importance in history. Masks for pandemic 100’yrs ago masks today. Of course, the viewership misunderstanding of the women’s roles. Jason is amazing in many ways.
Sad his family is breaking up. Love Amanda and the two together. Beautiful interview and amazing subject. Thank you, both.

Love his honest uncertainty about how to deal with the end of his marriage in his music - "What do you think? Help!" - I have never met him and obviously only have my impressions as a fan, but it's hard to imagine many other big name artists offering that plea. He's such a natural in the way he presents himself. I wonder if that is a by-product of going through recovery. You'll figure it out, Jason. You already have on several tracks on "Weathervanes", IMHO, and done so beautifully. I almost sense you are in a place of relief, which would otherwise be surprising for such a recent dissolution. Continued peace on your road. Thanks for bringing us along with you.

If Jason wants to write a balls out rock song, he needs to get another guitar player into the 400 Unit, like an Allen Collins, that takes no prisoners, just lights the wick and goes for it, no self-consciousness about 'rockin out'✌️🤟

He's a political opposite but his song writing is above any political disagreement. I choose to tune out his political leaning because why should a musician be my internal & political compass? He's certainly not 😉

That's really interesting because I heard another interview where Jason Isbell said yes, he is trying to get across specific themes/messages in his songs--like the need for gun control in "Save the World" and the plight of the working man in America in "Something More Than Free."

It always seems odd to me that social media (CZcams included) is full of opinion and judgement. Yet for some e reason artists and athletes et es are not supposed to have any opinions or express them. What I see with Jason is 90% incredible and thoughtful music with occasional commentary (usually when asked). On the opposite spectrum someone like Ted Nugent who seems to only show up with incendiary comments and zero relevant music anymore.

@@carljohnson2700 I agree to an extent, but it's got to be a little more (ie, jealousy, envy, etc) because I rarely agree with Jason politically but I love him, his music and would go to war next to him if it came down to it. Not just because of his musical or acting talent or his high intelligence but because he's a genuinely a really good guy. I've loved him since his DBT days and when he started getting famous as a solo artist I was so ecstatic for him. Saying all this because I feel like disliking someone because of their political views seems emotionally immature. Outside of anything hateful like Nazis or the KKK, obviously, which he's never going to be in a category like that.
