Thanks for all you do UnitE. You've been on this since the beginning and your advice has been invaluable. I'm sure Roland will get the sample editor feature added. It's probably a significant development lift or that would have been in this initial version. Everyone here is right Roland needs to be cutting you a check each month! :-) Thanks also for the blank backup set up. I began building one and got to about the 4th bank before I got sleepy and quit. Great summary! I think I need to call out of work so I can get exploring. This will be so much nicer than scrolling through menus for all of the inst or ptn options. Easy to get lost on what you need to tweak, now it's all on display.
A very welcome software tool for the TR-6/8S, whilst there is so much value to be had by learning the hardware route as much as possible, having this editor is a real time saver (at least for myself). Good vid sir. Here's to hoping Roland comes up with a clip editor/sequencer for the MC707 that you can load midi phrases into and then export as 707 project file.

Great video! Honestly, the TR Editor saved the day for me. Being able to control parameters while viewing the totality of ther functions across different knobs at once, really makes for a more comprehensive workflow. Before this, having to change one parameter at a time by knob and screen was a bit tedious. I really have fun especially with the FM drums. The only few things left I think I would like to see is a 2nd or 3rd LFO to be added and for the instrument to play out loud when you change it's note with the stop-point encoder....but I'm not sure if thats something that can be added with firmware update.
Thanks for another great tutorial Brian! As a relatively new drum machine owner with the TR8S being my first, your vids have been essential to the learning process. This update looks like it will make it even easier to understand the functionality and create great sounds and patterns.
I agree with many of the comments, superb program and allows much easier and freer ways to adjust the tr8s however one huge downside for me is there is no start/stop button!!!!!! you still have to revert to the machine to play the sequences...It would be also nice to play with the midi settings....in essence Roland has created a customizable sound bank with a sequencer and added a load of manual inputs, they could of just sold a small box with a PCB and editor. but they have to warrant charging such a large amount of cash for a pretty-looking instrument with flashing lights.
I’m very grateful for your work in this video, in fact I’d go as far to say this is better than the “official” Roland vid! (It certainly carries more information) the software seems to be a total game changer, anything to make programming this thing easier is a winner in my book! Two questions, 1, is there a iOS/iPad version of this editor? 2, can you drag user samples into the editor say from your desktop?

Haha, yeah! I don't know about the face. Kinda like it hidden.😕 This definitely brought a new angle to my sound design on the TR-8S and 6S. Something similar for the MCs would be nice. Something that Zenology Pro can open up in.

Great stuff! In the never ending struggle to figure out what drum machine/synth I want to buy next this makes the TR-8/6s more appealing. Hopefully this means MC-707 well have something similar soon.

Thanks so much for this! Finally installed this for my TR-6S & you helped me set things up pretty quick. Just one main thing I've really been wanting to accomplish I can't seem to figure out. I've uploaded some PCM samples from SD card; is there a way for me to label them all by category? I was able to make a kit with them, but they ALL say "IMPORT" as the category. Can't I change the samples individually to "BD" SN" so I can also select them when scrolling through all kicks, snares, etc on the machine?
That will have to be done on the machine itself. The editor is not a really good librarian, unfortunately. I hope to see improvements in future updates.

I can’t understand qhy it isn’t a simple Vst integrated in daws rather than thos 3!! windows. Also that it is so weired and not standard for managing : basic new|save buttons instrument as kits as patterns, all in a clear managing window, as dor bank and presets with all vst. Btw.. Awesome, thank you for the tutorial. One question: in what cases do we use the Send button? I mean, I tweak stuff within the editor, click on the Write if I want to save my work, but do I need to additionally click on Send before turning off the TR-8S unit or...?
Sooo I just stumbled upon this "TR-Editor" and immediately searched for a Unit.E vid on this. WOW.....thank you so much for the blank template. I created one awhile back, but they all have 808's assigned. Your videos have helped me so much with using my TR as an instrument and this new software will really take that to the next level. Do you know if Roland plans on allowing us to backup patterns/kits through this software? I've been messing with it and haven't seen anything that allows it. I've been wanting to backup all my patterns so I can start with a blank template and load some songs I have now without loading a full backup.
DUDE, I just had a huge revelation. I don’t even have to save patterns/kits individually using export. I can just import any kit from a backup. I’ve literally put off making a new tan plate for a year and am laughing so hard. I just loaded up you all blank backup. Thank YOU for being so helpful and awesome. I’ll be a follower for life.

Bro I said it when I subscribe to this channel dang near at the start thank you for simple clear info. I need to wrap my head around the file swapping to make it fast for me....now if only you could make mv8800 seem as simple LOL...paired with a VS2480😂 I'm getting there!!!!....so I'll say this and ask for any feed back...I wanna send the 6 aux to the VS to send back into EXTin of tr8s..what's simple way to individuals fx of any or all 6 them have 6ch bus fx so ad it goes back into unit it will be insertFXd and/or bus FXd or duck one or both while live play....I mostly live play and just record/sample myself....still a novice with lots of thoughts not enough practical knowledge to do it fast .....keeping thoughts together while menu dive is tuff

You are sending 6 assign outs to individual tracks on the VS and then back into the 8S ext in from the Master Out, or Aux A or B on the VS? If this is correct, then what is the purpose of the fx on the VS? EQ? Compression/limiting? Performance fx? It seems pretty straightforward as far as connection and routing. Only real issue is that you lose reverb and delay from the 8S on individual instruments.
I just downloaded the TR-8S editor and I like it a lot except it doesn't fit my 24 inch monitors. It won't full screen and it will only really let me adjust it to the left or right but not really higher so I can view all of the bottom settings.

But I wanted to Ask for help on getting this to launch. I'm on Windows 8.1 which I understand is about to go away for good but I recently Downloaded the Tr editor and installed it. And when I go to open it it just Crashes without a message just closes. Any suggestions at all
Hey. Sorry for the delayed response. The editor doesn’t work in windows I assume far as I know. You can try to run the program as admin. That might work.

Upon further investigation, I clearly see on the Roland cloud website that it's only available for Windows 10 and 11 I wasn't paying attention when I downloaded the cloud. I'm surprised that that even worked doh. Even more reason to upgrade
You can clear patterns using the clear function onscreen. If you want to initialize patterns and kits, basically resetting them to blank patterns and default kits, you have to use the machine.

Me and other users are having USB connection problem with TR-Editor. Even though everything is up to date and the hardware is working perfectly, the TR-Editor does not recognize the TR8S. There are several reports like mine in forums for over a year and until today Roland has not given any solution.
It is most likely your OS isn't compatible or the driver did not install correctly. That has been the problem for others. What was the solution Roland gave today?

For now, you still have to put the samples on the sd card and import them. I have talked with them and they are aware that this feature is needed to really advance the software.

I just installed this on my laptop to go with my TR-8S. As helpful as this app seems to be, I have one huge gripe: I cannot find any way to resize the application to for the resolution of my laptop monitor. And I'm not running my resolution at any weird ratio. It's at 1920X1080. About as standard as you can get. As a result, the bottom of the editor is cut off. This seems like one of the most basic options a developer should add to their application.
I have the tr-6s with the 1.0.0 version and I'm having some trouble to use this editor interface. I did download and install the .exe without any issues, but when I run the editor it shows an alert saying that my device is outdated. I tried to update via usb cable following the instructions on the roland website (copy and paste the bin file into the tr6s driver folder), but nothing happened (device shows the no update file was found message). Does anyone knows how to proceed?
Make sure you put the .bin file in the root drive of the sd card, not in any folders. You will have to initially unzip the folder that you download before you can copy the upd.bin file to the card. Once it's on the card and the card is in the device, hold shift while turning on the 6S.
Anyone had problems using it on Mojave? It just won't open! Got the relevant driver for the 6s, reinstalled Cloud Manager but still nada! soooo desparate to run this!
Hopefully they add midi learn to the knobs in the editor or even better finally complete the MIDI specification which I have complained about since day 1 lol.
thx for this. do you know why the acb sounds have basically no (extra) parameters while the pcm and fm sounds have many? I can understand the fm having many, but why on earth would the pcm (samples) have more params than actual synth generated sounds?
@@UnitE808 I guess that’s a reason. Not a good one. Having more sound design options on samples would just make we want to use samples. I’d rather just have all those sounds all just as pcm at that point. And at that point, I don’t know why I would then care about having acb at all, might as well just use a sampler, or use another synth drum with more sound design options, like electron cycles or even volca drum. Anyway, thx for confirming.
@alexwestconsulting there are things you can do to the acb sounds that are not possible with samples. A sample will cut itself off if retriggered before the decay ends. ACB tones will layer over itself, causing harmonics. ACB tones can be overdrive without clipping, and doing this will actually change the sound characteristics. You can't do that with samples. They are hard set for sound.
@@UnitE808 hey I hear you. I’m a fan of acb in general. I have many of the acb synths. I get that they have inherent dynamics that samples don’t. But something like note stealing, if that’s what happens to samples on the TR’s, is a limitation of the TR’s, not inherently of samples. But yes I understand that acb will handle layering in a more dynamic way than samples. That they have more inherent dynamics than samples in general. All good stuff. But I’d rather have more fine tune sound design in the end. Sorry, I don’t mean to be argumentative, just disappointed. I just really expected that the acb synth engine it has would be put to better use, to act more like the synth that it is. Oh well. I’ll stick with my Rytm.

The gui for me is the wrong size and missing the bottom of the plugin, is there any plans to update for resizing or I wonder can I do something my end?
That would be a great life! I run a wastewater management company by day, raise 2 kids with my wife 24/7, and teach people how to use their gear by late night. Occasionally, I get to go out and surf.
Would you have any idea on how to rescale the program? have it open on my mac but the software hangs off the bottom of my screen. have tried several ways to resize but cant figure it out..
TR editor doesn’t work on M1 MacBook with Mac OS Monterey unfortunately. Tried different cables, ports, made sure the driver was installed and not detecting device. TR8S has the latest firmware as well 😢
@@UnitE808 I think it wanted to use as audio interface but I declined. The website shows it supports Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) and Mac OS 11 (Big Sur) but nothing about Monterey (12.6) which is seriously unfortunate. Will have to dig up an older Mac and test.
If you make changes on either the machine or in the editor and it doesn’t transmit the info, you can hit send to send from the editor or get to get info from the machine.
Perhaps I am blind. Is there a way to start and stop the TR-8S using the editor? I keep my unit on a shelf behind me so I can work on the synths and PC in front of me.
If you mean kits you create, no. Patterns and kits do not transfer. The sound packs from the Roland Cloud are just samples, I believe, So, they should work.
Are you aware of this not being supported in Windows 11? If so I'll stop trying to troubleshoot and wait hopefully for an update ! (everything connects fine but it just says 'Please connect device')

Been using the tr editor for a few days but can’t get the tempo to sync between the editor and the tr8s. Is there a setting I need to disable or enable on the tr8s? Or is that feature not available? Thanks in advance for your help!
I downloaded the editor with the manager and I get nothing. I downloaded the driver and still nothing. Is anyone else having issues. Most people don't seem to have a problem. I must be missing something.
Are you on firmware 2.03? Did you install the driver with the TR-8S disconnected from the computer, assuming you are using Mac. If you're using windows, what version?

@@tyln_livejam did you allow the driver in the security settings of your Mac? On the download page for the driver, there are instructions on installing on Catalina and higher.
Its nice editor from Roland But.... you must be online every 7 days with the cloud or else it stops working , no sorry I payed my machine now leave me alone Roland.
Thank you for your input. I, fortunately, have not had any issues using the editor. Plus, the SP-404 App is amazing and zenology pro is a great vst. Just because this editor is not working for you doesn't mean all software by Roland is rubbish
@@UnitE808 there hardware is fine. But think about it what it takes to do an update? I can just hook, for example, my cobalt into the computer, hit update, and 2 minutes later? Done. Now roland? backup to an SD card, after you format it to 'roland' whatever, download the secret squirrel file (after you sign the disclaimer of "this might trash your machine"... Do some archaic power-on button press, plug in the USB, drag the secret file onto the device (if it actually shows up. 50/50 chance). Reboot the machine three more times... Hokey-pokey anyone? It's nonsense. After all that the editor freezes and the only way to shut it down is task manager. Roland is clueless.

@@MrEMann I have had the 8S since inception. I am quite aware on how to update the machine. It is not exactly like you said. Formatting the sd card is only the first time you insert it into the machine so that it has the proper folder structure, not every time you update. The holding shift while plugging in the usb is only if you are updating using storage mode. It's not a necessary step to update. You can just take the card out and place the file on the card and put the card back in. Again, you are exaggerating the instructions. Call me what you want, I'm no fanboy. I have shown no indication of being one. My comment that because something doesnt work for you, there is no need to trash the entire line of software... was more of a comment toward your behavior, not my opinion of a product.

Roland sent out a tr-8s user survey recently and I wrote them I wanted this. Love they came out with this.
Yes, they did the survey over the summer. An editor was probably the top most requested addition.
I agree, The menu diving was the main drawback, great to have a more user friendly way to edit

I created one awhile back, but they all have 808's assigned. Your videos have helped me so much with using my TR as an instrument and this new software will really take that to the next level.
Do you know if Roland plans on allowing us to backup patterns/kits through this software? I've been messing with it and haven't seen anything that allows it. I've been wanting to backup all my patterns so I can start with a blank template and load some songs I have now without loading a full backup.
Just make a backup on the 8S. It will save everything on the sd card.

DUDE, I just had a huge revelation. I don’t even have to save patterns/kits individually using export. I can just import any kit from a backup. I’ve literally put off making a new tan plate for a year and am laughing so hard. I just loaded up you all blank backup.

I need to wrap my head around the file swapping to make it fast for me....now if only you could make mv8800 seem as simple LOL...paired with a VS2480😂 I'm getting there!!!!....so I'll say this and ask for any feed back...I wanna send the 6 aux to the VS to send back into EXTin of tr8s..what's simple way to individuals fx of any or all 6 them have 6ch bus fx so ad it goes back into unit it will be insertFXd and/or bus FXd or duck one or both while live play....I mostly live play and just record/sample myself....still a novice with lots of thoughts not enough practical knowledge to do it fast .....keeping thoughts together while menu dive is tuff

Let me see if I can understand what you want and help. You are sending 6 assign outs to individual tracks on the VS and then back into the 8S ext in from the Master Out, or Aux A or B on the VS? If this is correct, then what is the purpose of the fx on the VS? EQ? Compression/limiting? Performance fx?
It seems pretty straightforward as far as connection and routing. Only real issue is that you lose reverb and delay from the 8S on individual instruments.

I just downloaded the TR-8S editor and I like it a lot except it doesn't fit my 24 inch monitors. It won't full screen and it will only really let me adjust it to the left or right but not really higher so I can view all of the bottom settings.
For now, changing screen resolution is the only way to resize. I have a 24 inch monitor too and the editor is a small portion of the real estate.

Hey, friend, I love that you have this video. And I'm sorry if somebody already answered this. I'm on break and I don't have a lot of time to look. But I wanted to Ask for help on getting this to launch. I'm on Windows 8.1 which I understand is about to go away for good but I recently Downloaded the Tr editor and installed it. And when I go to open it it just Crashes without a message just closes. Any suggestions at all
Hey. Sorry for the delayed response. The editor doesn’t work in windows I assume far as I know. You can try to run the program as admin. That might work.

Upon further investigation, I clearly see on the Roland cloud website that it's only available for Windows 10 and 11 I wasn't paying attention when I downloaded the cloud. I'm surprised that that even worked doh. Even more reason to upgrade

You can clear patterns using the clear function onscreen. If you want to initialize patterns and kits, basically resetting them to blank patterns and default kits, you have to use the machine.

Me and other users are having USB connection problem with TR-Editor. Even though everything is up to date and the hardware is working perfectly, the TR-Editor does not recognize the TR8S. There are several reports like mine in forums for over a year and until today Roland has not given any solution.
It is most likely your OS isn't compatible or the driver did not install correctly. That has been the problem for others. What was the solution Roland gave today?

For now, you still have to put the samples on the sd card and import them. I have talked with them and they are aware that this feature is needed to really advance the software.

I just installed this on my laptop to go with my TR-8S. As helpful as this app seems to be, I have one huge gripe: I cannot find any way to resize the application to for the resolution of my laptop monitor. And I'm not running my resolution at any weird ratio. It's at 1920X1080. About as standard as you can get. As a result, the bottom of the editor is cut off. This seems like one of the most basic options a developer should add to their application.
It has been brought up to the developer. I expect a bug fix soon.

I have the tr-6s with the 1.0.0 version and I'm having some trouble to use this editor interface. I did download and install the .exe without any issues, but when I run the editor it shows an alert saying that my device is outdated. I tried to update via usb cable following the instructions on the roland website (copy and paste the bin file into the tr6s driver folder), but nothing happened (device shows the no update file was found message). Does anyone knows how to proceed?
Make sure you put the .bin file in the root drive of the sd card, not in any folders. You will have to initially unzip the folder that you download before you can copy the upd.bin file to the card. Once it's on the card and the card is in the device, hold shift while turning on the 6S.
Anyone had problems using it on Mojave? It just won't open! Got the relevant driver for the 6s, reinstalled Cloud Manager but still nada! soooo desparate to run this!
Pretty cool, be even cooler if this was a vst and they released a cheaper unit that’s just a controller for it at a much cheaper price point. TR8Sc
Hopefully they add midi learn to the knobs in the editor or even better finally complete the MIDI specification which I have complained about since day 1 lol.

thx for this. do you know why the acb sounds have basically no (extra) parameters while the pcm and fm sounds have many? I can understand the fm having many, but why on earth would the pcm (samples) have more params than actual synth generated sounds?
They are meant to replicate the original sounds. Those original sounds did not have many parameters to adjust.
@@UnitE808 I guess that’s a reason. Not a good one. Having more sound design options on samples would just make we want to use samples. I’d rather just have all those sounds all just as pcm at that point. And at that point, I don’t know why I would then care about having acb at all, might as well just use a sampler, or use another synth drum with more sound design options, like electron cycles or even volca drum. Anyway, thx for confirming.
@alexwestconsulting there are things you can do to the acb sounds that are not possible with samples. A sample will cut itself off if retriggered before the decay ends. ACB tones will layer over itself, causing harmonics. ACB tones can be overdrive without clipping, and doing this will actually change the sound characteristics. You can't do that with samples. They are hard set for sound.
@@UnitE808 hey I hear you. I’m a fan of acb in general. I have many of the acb synths. I get that they have inherent dynamics that samples don’t. But something like note stealing, if that’s what happens to samples on the TR’s, is a limitation of the TR’s, not inherently of samples. But yes I understand that acb will handle layering in a more dynamic way than samples. That they have more inherent dynamics than samples in general. All good stuff. But I’d rather have more fine tune sound design in the end. Sorry, I don’t mean to be argumentative, just disappointed. I just really expected that the acb synth engine it has would be put to better use, to act more like the synth that it is. Oh well. I’ll stick with my Rytm.

The gui for me is the wrong size and missing the bottom of the plugin, is there any plans to update for resizing or I wonder can I do something my end?
A bug fix is coming, I'm sure. In the meantime, you can adjust your screen resolution.

For now, you have to change resolution on your screen. The developers are working on it.

No start/stop. It's an editor, not vst. It could come in an update, though
TR editor doesn’t work on M1 MacBook with Mac OS Monterey unfortunately. Tried different cables, ports, made sure the driver was installed and not detecting device. TR8S has the latest firmware as well 😢
Is the 8S showing up in your DAW?
@@UnitE808 I think it wanted to use as audio interface but I declined. The website shows it supports Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) and Mac OS 11 (Big Sur) but nothing about Monterey (12.6) which is seriously unfortunate. Will have to dig up an older Mac and test.
Got it working on my 17in 2010 MBP, guess they aren’t supporting new os yet.

Just curious: can you explain what the send/receive functions do in the tr8s editor?
If you make changes on either the machine or in the editor and it doesn’t transmit the info, you can hit send to send from the editor or get to get info from the machine.

If you mean kits you create, no. Patterns and kits do not transfer. The sound packs from the Roland Cloud are just samples, I believe, So, they should work.

I downloaded the editor with the manager and I get nothing. I downloaded the driver and still nothing. Is anyone else having issues. Most people don't seem to have a problem. I must be missing something.
Are you on firmware 2.03? Did you install the driver with the TR-8S disconnected from the computer, assuming you are using Mac. If you're using windows, what version?

@Slick James Johnson is TxProgChange and TxEditData on in your 8S utility menu. Try enabling the Rx equivalent too.

Its nice editor from Roland But....
you must be online every 7 days with the cloud or else it stops working , no sorry I payed my machine now leave me alone Roland.
I haven't had to be online with cloud to make the editor work. I'll reconfirm tonight, but I think you have another issue happening.

Thank you for your input. I, fortunately, have not had any issues using the editor. Plus, the SP-404 App is amazing and zenology pro is a great vst. Just because this editor is not working for you doesn't mean all software by Roland is rubbish
@@UnitE808 there hardware is fine. But think about it what it takes to do an update? I can just hook, for example, my cobalt into the computer, hit update, and 2 minutes later? Done. Now roland? backup to an SD card, after you format it to 'roland' whatever, download the secret squirrel file (after you sign the disclaimer of "this might trash your machine"... Do some archaic power-on button press, plug in the USB, drag the secret file onto the device (if it actually shows up. 50/50 chance). Reboot the machine three more times... Hokey-pokey anyone? It's nonsense. After all that the editor freezes and the only way to shut it down is task manager. Roland is clueless.

@@MrEMann I have had the 8S since inception. I am quite aware on how to update the machine. It is not exactly like you said. Formatting the sd card is only the first time you insert it into the machine so that it has the proper folder structure, not every time you update. The holding shift while plugging in the usb is only if you are updating using storage mode. It's not a necessary step to update. You can just take the card out and place the file on the card and put the card back in. Again, you are exaggerating the instructions.
Call me what you want, I'm no fanboy. I have shown no indication of being one. My comment that because something doesnt work for you, there is no need to trash the entire line of software... was more of a comment toward your behavior, not my opinion of a product.
