    ( www.TFLtruck.com ) You may recognize the Toyota Tacoma if you live in the U.S., but that's not the truck the rest of the world would recognize. Instead, everyone else gets the Toyota Hilux. It's still a pickup, but how exactly is the global Hilux different from the Tacoma we can buy here? Fortunately, we have a viewer from Malaysia who explains how the Hilux is different.

      Payload and towing is effectively the same between US and European/Australian trucks (and cars).
      US trucks are rated much lower for safety and braking considerations, bc people drive much faster on US highways and roads, while towing and hauling- or in general.
      Same vehicles, but rated differently for different road conditions in the name of safety and capability

    Here in the Philippines, it is one of the most reliable pickups that people get when they are loading heavy stuff. The hilux is mainly a work truck, in my experience it has the stiffest ride I have ever rode on both the 2014 model and the 2018 model comparing it to the others. In my opinion the Hilux is a lot better than the Tacoma for working. It has higher payload and towing numbers than the Taco - almost comparable with the Tundra in that regard - especially payload. • @jasonw8124
      @jasonw8124 Před 4 lety +3

      The higher towing and payloads are only because other countries use different definitions, it's not that the truck in SA was more durable or sturdier.

    The short of it is the Tacoma is a lifestyle vehicle and the Hilux more of a work truck with some fancy options if you want. I think most Hiluxes can take one metric tonne in the tray so from one platform they have many body style variants, tray options and 2x4 and 4x4. From Toyota's perspective I imagine if they sold a Tacoma elsewhere in the world it would be one less Hilux sold and if Hilux went to the USA one less tacoma so the market may not lift.

    Pros of the Hilux vs tacoma:
    - Better mileage (Because of its diesel engine, up to 30mpg on highway)
    - More torque than Tacoma (Therefore more towing and load capacity)
    - Dual glove box and the upper box can keep cool to storage beverages.

      I hear Toyota has emissions durability issues in Australia. Not sure they did a good job with thier systems.
      Regulations don't keep diesel Tacomas from existing. Cheap gas negates the need where in other markets, gas is much more expensive. If there were significant amounts of customers lining up to buy a diesel Tacoma and willing to pay the premium pricing, we would have a diesel Tacoma. We don't like paying extra for diesel cars and trucks so the market shrunk. Chevy will be dropping the diesel Colorado because the take rate is too small.
      Before we had tight diesel emissions restrictions, you could buy diesel Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, and VWs. The take rate was small then too. We had the Chevy Cruze diesel. Again, not enough buyers jumping in.
      Let's not create a narrative that can quickly be mowed down with evidence. Americans don't have diesels because they don't demand them and they won't buy them. I wish it was otherwise and I actually own a diesel so I put my money where my mouth is.

    The Hilux-Diesel... awesome truck, and would for sure fill a North American niche. I have had a 1993 4-Runner 2.4 gas standard until 2012 and a 1997 4-Runner 3.8 gas auto 2010 until 2016. So doing some math in my head so 25 years total combined. Awesome vehicles. Thanks TFL.

      Bill Waterhouse - I have a 2000 4-Runner with a 3.0L diesel out of a ‘05 HiLux. The 2000 4-Runner was the last year for the manual transmission, and the third Gen is still my favorite vintage. The diesel majorly woke my truck up compared to the gas 3.2L. With the Diesel engine I added a six speed manual transmission (also Toyota). I achieve 28-30 mpg on the highway with this combination and even got 17mpg towing a 1982 Isuzu Pup diesel from New Orleans to Atlanta. 4-Runners are great trucks. I wish you many miles on yours.

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop Před 4 lety

      SuperSnallygaster - OK, the 2.8L Duramax is more related to the 3.0L I4 in the USPS Ram ProMaster vans.
      That 2.8L was an original VM Motori design when it was a 50 / 50 Fiat / GM joint venture. When GM sold its' part to Fiat (in the FCA transition) GM took the design and updated and tuned the engine to their specs, which then became the 2.8L Duramax. Fiat, OTOH developed further the engine (was in RWD-based guise in overseas Jeep Wranglers and earlier on it was used in US-spec Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee crossovers) and enlarged it to 3.0L, as in those large FWD vans.
      The engine is NOT related to both generations of the 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel FCA uses in larger apps. That's another VM Motori product that they kept exclusive and was later developed than the 2.8L - 3.0L I4.

    Amazing video simon, the quality is tops. I couldn't believe it was done with an iphone and your English is amazing, as well as the pickup, but i would like to point out for those who have never been in this pickup or are planning to buy one just know that the back seats are horrendously uncomfortable and that's just an understatement, i climbed in one of them and 5minutes in my back was already paining so i had to put a pillow on my lower back for support, if you are a backseat passenger you are going to find the journey horrendous. And one other thing is this pickups are pron to accidents although they are stable at high speeds I wouldn't recommend doing a sudden turn, you will loose control very quickly, it's good that simon added spacers in his wheels to lower the center of gravity and give it more stability... But all in all they are amazing beautiful looking trucks with excellent mpg's , good reliability with a quiet and smooth cabin...

      Among the 3 major makers offering their 4WDs here in Malaysia, the Hilux has the stiffest back suspension set up.
      It was and still is primarily a work truck and the stiff back leaf spring suspension is not kind on the backseat passengers.
      Add 2 to 300kg of weight to the rear and it feels like a different vehicle altogether.

    • @lloydmwinga5628
      @lloydmwinga5628 Před 4 lety

      Yah, but the problem with this new hilux is not the stiff suspension but the 90° back seat, back seat is too straight...! most pickups and even the previous generation hilux had a more reclined seat more than 90° which makes them more comfortable back seats... Sorry i didn't mention this...😇🙏🏼
