  • A video about identifying and preparing chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa.)
    Note on content: there is a five-pointed star on the bottom of blueberries, but they're not part of the rose family-- they're in the heath family! You can see the difference in appearance between the "stars" of chokeberry and blueberry in the video.

    I add a small handful of frozen chokeberries to my protein smoothie every morning, along with wheatgrass juice powder, raw cacao nibs and a bit of raw honey. Amazing way to start the day.

    Chokeberry contains one of the highest concentrations of anthocyanins, a superfood that makes fruit purple. You might not want to discard the skin just because it is bitter.

      Good question! Most of the medicinal properties are associated with it being very high in antioxidants. Here's an article about it that lists sources: www.healthline.com/nutrition/aronia-berries#what-they-are

    Thank you for taking the time to share this info. I hope to plant some soon! I've heard that birds do like them and don't like the berries. What are your thoughts?

    I try to identify this plant in the wild. I have one close to my home. It looks very close to what you show in the video. I am not sure about seeds, because berries have pretty big seeds (3-4 count). Seeds are smaller then grape's ones, but very solid. The flovers are white.
    Thank you.

      I can't identify the plant based on what you wrote, but compare it to this identification guide: www.minnesotawildflowers.info/shrub/black-chokeberry. Good luck!

    Are there any berries that look similar to chokecherry that are poisonous? I always worry about making a mistake. What about juneberry and nannyberry? Are there similar berries that could be confused for them? Love your videos. I just happened across them today. I live in a rural area a have many berry shrubs that I am trying to identufy. Using Google "Lens" and watching your videos, I believe I have juneberry, chokecherry, nannyberry, and wild grapes

    I keep reading that heating the berries in water destroys many of the desired attributes. Go for cold press.

    • @fourseasonforaging
      @fourseasonforaging  Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah, cold pressing definitely makes a higher-quality juice, as I explain in the video. But some people are more concerned with quantity than quality. Which is fine, but I personally prefer it cold pressed!

    I'd like to know how wide one aronia can get. Just to make planting easier. People may not have the results

    • @fourseasonforaging
      @fourseasonforaging  Před rokem

      That would depend on the cultivar! You'll have to ask the nursery you get it from or research the particular cultivar online

    • @fourseasonforaging
      @fourseasonforaging  Před 3 lety +2

      It's a little sweet, but mostly astringent. Also, it depends on local conditions. Some are sweeter than others.
