I think the reason why I stayed to watch it all, was how authentic you were. Most youtubers cut out any trailing thoughts or ideas but you left it in. It's always so refreshing to see someone being themselves regardless if a camera is on them. Since that's a rare thing nowadays, so i'll be rooting for you!

I used to make a youtube channel for every hobby I had as a kid, but at some point in high school I stopped doing this due to the same reasons you mentioned about social rejection. looking back, I effectively cut off the only outlet I had for the things I was passionate about and killed that unique inner child. it took a loooong time to realize this and start to repair the damage. this was a really great video and really resonated with me! I think it would be really sick to use future, past, and present Lauren as recurring characters throughout your videos lol

Jared and Lauren, it's no coincidence that
1- I was watching Jared's latest video a few days back
2- I find Jared here now as I'm watching Lauren's video
3- I made a YT channel and uploaded 6 videos 1 day before watching Jared's for more or less the same reasons Lauren mentioned in this video.
The videos I uploaded are only related to foreign languages....as of now. I plan to upload videos reading children stories, doing some voice acting, and expressing many of my different hobbies. In the past, my English level was heavily impacted by my judgmental environment. That is, you get made fun of both for sounding bad and/or "trying to sound American". Now, years later, after I managed to stop caring what people will think about me, I can say that I jumped fairly quickly, approximately from B2 to C2 in as little as 3 months, all while also "improving" my accent.
But man, was I so much more confident when I was a kid. I even have a name for "that confident kid", '3bood', always wishing I could take him out to a nice dinner and chat with him for at least 10 minutes. I wish I had recorded myself to see what were my "constants" (as you accurately put it). I just want to understand what went through my head during such a close yet seemingly far time.
I didn't just make my channel and hope nobody finds it, I actively shared it with those I know. The reason for that is nobody can spill your beans if you do it first. Nobody can hurt you if you hurt yourself first 😭😁
Maybe in another life I'd share it with you all 😂 but for now, thank you both.

The bits about "talking to the voices in your head" and "a lot of tension being present between your past, current, and future self" is so relatable that I don't even know what to say. I think that this all stems from being a "special kid" (being really smart, creative, or confident as a kid) and then the world somehow taking that special thing away from you. We lose all self. We lose all individuality and start looking at others to imitate them in order to be more "happy" or "succesfull", which is a terrible way to achieve those things in the first place.
In my case, nobody valued my imagination. My parents say I used to make up crazy fantastiacl stories when I was 5 years old. But they shut it down because it could be dangerous if I believed I could fly or lift something very heavy or things like that... They didn't know how to channel that side of my unique self into something beautiful and productive instead. Also I had ADHD and I was so smart that I didn't need to study for anything at school, I just had to listen to my teachers in class to pass tests with the highest grade. I wasn't challenged enough. And I'm being real here, this isn't some ego trip. Not taught how to study hard for something in order to achieve it became a huge problem for me later on in my life. I still don't know how to put off instant gratifications in return for real achievements in life. I literally couldn't sit still in my seat in primary school. Thankfully my form teacher accommodated that behaviour and I wasn't thrown out of the system. No adult ever knew that I had ADHD, or what to even do with my behaviour. I was a good student and that was enough for them.
This turned out to be a ranting session, but I'll still post this comment because it would be off my chest. If you read until now, one thing you can ascertain from this is that you are not alone. The way of the world beats all kinds of eccentric people down into submission and depression. Fight the good fight, and love yourself!

I relate very hard to this. But I'm trying. My reality check came in college entrance exams, where I'm like ohh you really gotta study hard for this. And since then I've been trying my best to learn to work hard. Although sometimes I still have that power to get the highest grades without studying hard at all, but all in all I now realise that being the "special kid" ain't gonna cut it. This was very relatable and close to home for me. And I loved your take on it and I agree 💯 percent on that instant gratification part. But I know we gonna make it. Have a nice day!

As you grow old, you do get moments of disassociation with your past self and sometimes your recognize that consciously. Then you can also further imagine that your future self will be feeling similar things about your present self. The present is indeed fleeting and your character is never exactly the same. You cannot step in the exact same river again. The Ship of Theseus paradox applies to the neurons of our brain and time as well. But don't fret about it. Treat each moment, each instance of yourself as "the One" and make the best decisions for the situation and your current version of self.

Same here. I breezed through primary and secondary school without studying at home, and college hit me hard in the face. So hard in fact that I'm a 5th year student of a 3.5 year computer engineering bachelor's degree, with 2 years minimum left.
One excuse that I maybe can be entitled to is that my family couldn't support me and I had to move from home, so I have to support myself and work alongside uni. There are two things that bring me peace: the fact that I make more money than the average salary in my country even though I'm part time; and personal advancements due to working + building resilience by failing a lot at uni.
McDonald's in the first few years pretty much shaped my personality into who I am now, I was a very socially awkward, wimpy kid and I learned to communicate better, be assertive and more confident (and ofc learn to clean efficiently lol). After that I finally decided to do something that's in my field and was lucky enough to land a junior web developer position. I picked up things very quickly, I feel like my brain is literally built to absorb documentation lol... So I really don't understand why uni is so hard for me.
But anyways I decided I'm going to do it no matter what. If it takes 10 years it takes 10 years. I don't care I'm going to do it. Inferiority complex, self loathing etc. went away after I landed the developer job, even more so after receiving good feedback and seeing my progress, plus I make a decent amount of money so mentally I'm ok I guess.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk (and sorry for the long comment).

I’ve healed a lot of trauma from childhood abuse in these last 5 years. And the person I am now has so much more to offer like wisdom, experience and compassion than when I was younger and operating out of fear and pain. And I probably would’ve embarrassed myself. Anyway, don’t worry about “time lost”. Our thirties are full of value if you can beat out the societal view of youth being the only value you have. It’s just not true. Good luck!

6:11 Actually I think the more constancy that a person has makes them less resilient against change. Like if someone is used to certain things always being stable, the moment something happens and they have to change to adapt to the new situation, they might not be able to go through it as smoothly as someone who’s used to constant change. This makes me believe that the constant thing that we all should have in our lives is the action of ‘change’.

i randomly came across this video, and I rly like the vibes and the message! I also started a youtube channel some years ago after procrastinating a long time because of fear of judgment. And even after starting and having a few videos up with positive reception, I still struggle to stay consistent. I think this social rejection part is so true, it's always at the back of your mind, consciously or subconsciously. But whenever I do upload, and even if it feels like barely anyone cares, despite the intense work and effort to overcome the resistance, it is always a step further in self-acceptance as you mentioned. Great video, and very authentic. Maybe the lack of music made it more "real" too. Keep it up! :D

    @takke9830 Před 5 měsíci +17

Something I wanna give you for your youtube journey is to try and working on not giving a f*ck so much. Ever since I stopped letting others drag me down, I started having a better life in general. Sadly in our society self confidence and self content is frowned upon because being fine with yourself removes you from the capitalization of looks, self improvement and confidence seeking. And honestly, it can also help avcoiding bad ppl in your life as well as you seeking stuff you don't need. What I mean by that is that If you struggle with negative self talk, sit down when it comes up, examine it and question it and also assert yourself. It's like saying: "I will not be tolerating of negative self talk any longer you either behave or perish!" and the more you do this active rewiring of the inner self, the more the internal bully will shrink and become your hype man over time. All it really takes is believing in it. Cause it is possible. You do not have to be passive towards self bvullying. You can fight it internally. Even if it's difficult.
Another thing is abandoning the idea that liking yourself or rooting for yourself and hyping yourself up is egotistical or narcissistic. Egomania is when it becomes toxic to the outside and the inside. and Narcissism is when your deep inner self is insecure and self hating. But other people trying to drag you down or "humbling you" aren't ppl you should at all listen to. They are unhappy with themselves and therefor project onto you. Do not try to please them. Don't even respond. You only need to listen if you seek out that criticism yourself. It's about consent. People do not have the right to erode your boundaries and consent to compensate for their own insecurity and criticism should only come from ppl closest to you and then again if you don't want it, you can chose not to listen.
And trust me, ppl will get mad. People can't cope with rejection or struggle to cope when they see someone with confidence they don't have. So stay away from meanspirited obessive gossipers, hypercritical ppl that don't respect boundaries and people that try to drag others down. People can be opinionated ofc but there's a difference between having opinions and trying to force them on people. That doesn't work usually. There can be other methods ofc to advocate for things or bring ppl to your side politically or otherwise but don't try to force it. It doesn't work.
And lastly, know your worth. You are yourself and therefor you are the most important part in your life. So prioritize yourself and only the closest ppl to you that respect and care about you. keep out the jealous and the ones desperate for validation. This doesn't mean that you have to shut out anyone in a bad place emotionally or anything but rather means that you can be emotionally avalable and caring but don't become a therapist to anyone that doesn't pay you. There is a limit to giving and it ends wherever you say it does. And lastly, know that your life is yours. If someone doesn't make you feel good, drags you down or makes you feel bad or holds you back, drop them. bye! don't even look back. That is the only way ppl that are toxic or think they are owed other people's unending time and attention will learn. Do not enable ppl that don't give you anything and endlessly suck your energy. You are nobody's mommy outside the children you chose to have or don't have.
Stand your ground, know your worth, Never tolerate disrespect or toxicity and confidence will come. You don't have to explain yourself to nobody other than yourself and the people you allow to. And most importantly thrive. You are smart, gorgeous and awesome!

Hearing your points and watching your efforts to make them clear made me realize that I was being foolish by not even trying.
Not only that, but I'm probably letting many future friends down by NOT sharing the knowledge I have acquired over the years.
Thanks again Lauren, I'll make sure to start something ASAP.
Good luck with your vet school 💖

I can’t decide on what to tell you! From “you are my sense of humor” to “what a hard watch. Do it again” I have been laughing my ass off watching this because I can see myself if you. I’ve changed because society tells me to but deep down who I truly am is someone who introspects like you and cringes a lot. This is amazing.

I can't say enough just how happy I am to have found this video. I feel exactly how you feel about philosophy and how creating things can help others. I also get stuck up really bad with my thoughts with the imaginary scenarios and internal debate. I'm now inspired to want to make videos which I've always wanted to do for CZcams but I never really did. It's also a lot of work editing but I guess that's something I'd have to get used to. I really like your diagram on the Happiness to Suffering compare and contrast. It's also really cool that you're very transparent and honest when making the video and I think that can inspire to be themselves and be comfortable with these types of things. Thank you for this video. I hope you continue to make videos and have fun with them. You're really intuitive, creative, and logical which are things I feel like are lacking in this world nowadays. Keep it up👍🏽

That’s such an inspiring video Lauren ❤
Regarding friends or vet school or outside judgements in general: your outlooks about them come from fears and anxiety. Think about it this way: imagine the friends you’d meet because you started CZcams; people who’d like you for you are because they see you so clearly now. Imagine getting into a school because they like you and what you’re saying and doing.
I think we focus way too much on the negative possibilities of our actions, not realising that most things we do usually bring something positive into our lives.

Also having something to look forward to everyday such as uploading a short clip of my life actually makes me motivated enough to have other daily tasks in my schedule. Hope your channel grows bigger this video was very nice!

I started my youtube channel a few weeks ago and I've already noticed a difference in the way I speak and talk about things in person (I'm naturally an introvert who always trails off and never finish my sentences lol). I spent so long on my first video trying to make sure I speak as clearly as possible, but I quickly realized that it's something I can slowly learn rather than try to perfect immediately. Watching this video of you talking about how youtube creates a positive impact on your life is really eye-opening, and is exactly the push I need to continue my journey! I also love how authentic and honest you are, which is incredibly refreshing to see. Keep it up!!! :) 🥰

Hi Lauren! We think in such a similar way, not a monologue inside but a dialogue with future, present, and past selves. It is overwhelming, and I am proud of you for being vulnerable with us and show it. I spend so much time doing this part off camera so on camera I can appear somewhat “presentable”. But you are presentable! You make sense to me this way. You are inspiring me to be braver thank you. I am sorry for random hate comments I hope you can ignore them!

I have no idea why I was recommended your video, and I don’t know why I watched. But I am glad I did
You are half my age but twice as wise! I can tell this video took courage, but it paid off imo.
A lot of lightbulbs went off in my head as your video progressed, thank you for your insights.
Also, I live on a farm and work with vets all the time. If you want to follow that route, imo, here are three things every good vet has:
1- a deep sense of love, empathy, sympathy for all patients/animals
2- a strong technical command & understanding of biology, math, etc. and the tools at your disposal
3- a constantly evolving customer service skill set (you will have to give your share of bad news to scared, vulnerable people)
If you can demonstrate your understanding of these three, getting into vet school will be a breeze.
Interviewers are trained to sniff BS. However, true passion for the craft is something you cannot fake or hide, and they can smell that too.
Thanks again and best of luck!

This video feels so authentic and is really encouraging to me at least because I just want to share to the world the things I love, but I feel like it's not worth it because of fear of judgement or just because I feel like it won't make a difference in someone else's life. Thank you for listening to yourself - which is bold and badass on it's own - and doing what you're doing with such genuine honesty. Just a few days ago i've been talking with a friend about how important it is that people share their ideas/thoughts/authentic selves with the world even if it means overcoming inner conflicts and fears, of which rejection sensitivity is probably one of the most difficult to. This is seriously inspiring, it initiates the chain of positive impact and growth, and just..makes me happy! So thank you, and looking forward to see and hear more of what you have to share!

honestly this was such a good video. I feel like you can still justify creating a youtube channel even with the opposite of utilitarianism, deontology. especially when you were speaking about adversities, as long as you are aligned with your moral duties and views, you can use loads of different ethical frameworks to justify your choice in making videos, so it must be a good idea, right? i think its interesting how two opposite ideas can be used to justify creating art.
but anyway, i loved this video and I'm so excited to see more :D

As you grow old, you do get moments of disassociation with your past self and sometimes your recognize that consciously. Then you can also further imagine that your future self will be feeling similar things about your present self. The present is indeed fleeting and your character is never exactly the same. You cannot step in the exact same river again. The Ship of Theseus paradox applies to the neurons of our brain and time as well. But don't fret about it. Treat each moment, each instance of yourself as "the One" and make the best decisions for the situation and your current version of self.

    Advance apologies for my English:
I found this immensely useful! As a guy who has a lot of voices in his head, I'm going to be making videos to help others and saving time the things that I do like photography, fixing things, and my interest in cards. Thank you so much for going beyond what you think would happen to you. From a random person who is on CZcams I love you for what you have done. It is honorable. And you may have gone through so many things that have battered you, but you have to believe that this is only a moment in time and what you want is what you'll get. It won't be 100% what you want, but you will be much closer to that than anything else after you look back whenever you choose to do some. And if that's okay? Good! If not? Change the direction and do the same thing over again! This is long as you feel that you're making a change for yourself and for the others around you? You will find those people that you need or even want, or you will end up taking care of people and that's rewarding in itself just like how you said your one video may have zero views and eventually help one person and there you go!
