If you are not from Hawaii and don’t live here then you should not get a permit. She’s not wrong. I was born and raised in Hawaii and have been living in Kihei for the last 14 years. I guarantee the county was already planning on raising property taxes way high. To make up for the stupidity of their actions or lack of actions in Lahaina. But, that’s lady was one hundred percent right. They just needed a scapegoat and I think we found it. STR.

Locals won’t be able to afford the rents on these former STRs. The only people who will rent will be high earning remote tech workers and rich retirees who can afford to leave the properties vacant most of the year while they’re off vacationing in luxury elsewhere.

Giving homes to Hawaii residents instead of tourists who just add pollution and traffic to the roads and nice places that locals enjoy, is the solution. Along with the rent for Hawaii born residents set at an affordable rate. This will give the families and next generation a chance to live in the communities they grew up in. Totally agree we need more housing. But to remove these rental short terms will actually hurt these communities. Our visitors in these communities utilize the mom and pop stores and all nearby establishments. Maybe they got to look at who is running these businesses. If it is a local family that is doing this to survive and potentially improve their quality of life; should be able to this type of business. Or someone that moved away and wants to come back to Hawaii and this is a way to do it. These local investors or owners of a BUSINESS will put the money back into the communities around the state of Hawaii. That and beach front will not be affordable. They got to be real. Who is really behind this PUSH? my guess is the hotel industry... who is really losing out? What was the situation before the fire? There are a lot of questions that should be answered before anything is done. Was this put to the people of Hawaii on the ballot?

Hawaii is doomed because their county officials are corrupt and do not know what they are doing. STRs provide so much funding and county makes so much money...but where is it? Pandemic came and tourists didn't come to the island and what happened? It almost killed the island and its residents. No short term rentals? With the huge need that the state obviously wants to address. Why not build a some town homes or let people build tiny homes. A lot of the need is really for single and two people rentals. You could put 5 or 6 of these units on a lot and then would open up larger home space in existing communities. A lot of the rentals are industry workers (maybe, not sure of the numbers) like bartenders, waiters, servers... Let the people or owners do what they want and can without going through red tape. They build it safe (have an inspector on site to inspect as they go) under supervision and immediate permit approval on the spot. Then things may start to happen and possibly change the whole way housing is done in the state of Hawaii. thinking out loud. why not?

The STVRs make major bank as BnBs. It got out of control because the number of units were never regulated. Now these property owners feel entitled to $150/night+ BnBs. Most of them are not kanaka maoli but transplant who jumped on the train. So many STVRs has contributed to an imbalance to the socio economic well being of Maui. They won’t like it but something has to give and the number of STVRs needs to be reduced. The health of our people and our community takes precedence. The tax loss from BnBs will be felt somewhat but the chance of stability in the housing market will be worth it.

On May 2nd, the Mayor of Maui announced plans to file a bill on June 25th to stop all short-term rentals in the Minatoya list A1 and A2 apartment-zoned areas. While the focus is currently on this group, the county now has the authority to change zoning regulations island-wide. This could result in the elimination of approximately 7,000 vacation rental units (over half of the island's vacation rentals) reducing income to the island by approximately $1.2 billion and the loss of approximately 14,000 jobs and the supporting small businesses. The county’s efforts are to force the use of these units into long term rentals for displaced residents of the Lahaina fire.
