  • I'm pruning up my two Barbados Cherry (Malpighia glabra) trees, one is an exposed root style, the other is a cutting that I'll grow in more of a natural tree form.

    It's looking like a mangrove tree.
    It would be an interesting style for it!

    Interesting species. It's a nice bonus to have edible fruit!
    I wouldn't say the exposed root style is my favorite, but it definitely can look great when done well!

    I appreciate your insight re: temperate trees. We had a good discussion about the topic and pomegranate trees at the TBS silent auction last month. Cheers

    Have to admit that this is one of the nicest Malpighias that I've seen. It looks fantastic with the birds and the sand. I can imagine it in a tropical landscape. Thanks for another GREAT video.

    The unusual root is the Spirit of the tree. These things that 'break the rules' are the aspects that make some trees special, sometimes even famous. But, once again, it's not my tree, and you're the Maestro.

    What an interesting tree that first one is! Those vertical roots remind me of what I am aiming for to create legs for a stylized Lord of the Rings Ent bonsai!

  • @growclipbonsaiforseniors1951

    Nice pruning on the BC. Great start for some nice growth this spring. Birds are a touch of class.

    I didn't know you could remove that much! 90% of the top is gone! 😂

  • @growclipbonsaiforseniors1951

    Catching up on videos, Nigel. I missed two of yours. Watching now with a cup of tea.

    This is wonderful..❤ personally, I'd consider pruning off that wrap around root this spring...it might make it easier to restyle it..🤔🤔

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think it would leave a big space in the root base, I'll just have to keep it around the back!

      @dkstott29 Před 8 měsíci

      @TheBonsaiZone you're probably right.. I was thinking that it makes the trunk look thicker / chunky. Removing it might give more taper and allow you to put a bigger rock under the tree...

    Nice to see you doing bonsai with this specie, it is among my favorite
    by the way you can multiply them by cuttings much easier than by seeds, almost 100% success

    Just wondering if you could do a short video on the care of air plants?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 8 měsíci

      I'm no expert with air plants, but I'd guess, just keep them warm and humid!!

  • @jeffncompany
    @jeffncompany Před 8 měsíci

    could always ground layer it - essentially creating a new root base for it

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 8 měsíci +1

      That would be possible, but I think the style is well established and it would be a shame to change it!

    Barbados Cherry is different from wild crape myrtle though they belong to the same clade. In the Philippines wild crape myrtle is also called Melendres
