- This is a handheld Linux desktop computer/emulation machine that I have been waiting four years for... was it worth the wait?

Going back to this old review, and seeing the current state of PC handhelds, to say Pandora dropped the ball professionally is an understatement.
They were way way too early.
Can't believe we came from this to the Steam Deck
I found my old ds lite recently, and I vaguely remembered something about a messed up shoulder button. I checked, and nothing was wrong. Then I decided to rewatch this video.
Vague memories of this video made me think my shoulder button was broken.
My shoulder button on my DSi XL is broken
$700 is waaaay too much for this. It's kinda cool...but really should have been $350 Max!
Huh. Fancy seeing you here. The good old days huh?
I didn't realize you were here!!!
@@TweeterMan287 and then he positively reviewed the Steam Deck 9 years later, yeah of course he liked pc handhelds
I remember watching this when it came out back in the day, this was way ahead of it's time considering Steam Deck's release...
The price of these things are still INSANE. No way are they worth the price
well if they had a large company behind them like for instance htc that makes phones it wouldn't be thay just can't produce in large enough quanteties to get the price down.
and unfortunately that is the downfall not being able to mass produce
Its a niche product id love to have one if I had money to spend :)
Same. But at the price its just not worth it. I mean a PSP can be picked up for around £35 or whatever currency you use, and that can pretty much emulate all what the pandora can
Pandora can do allot more than emulation, I think what these guys need is a kickstarter and some marketing help perhaps. What is aswesome is actually a totally open console like the pandora.
havent seen you in a while tweeterman i watched some of youre old stuff way back you grew up so much bro
looks like Craig took you for a ride
Android is a heavily modified Linux :)
Agent Agrimar Animations Sad that so many people have no clue that is the case. Android feels like an OS for babies... that's just me though lol. Android is extremely powerful in that the development behind it is practically endless. So that's good. But for people who thirst for more complexity...
***** Never claimed Linux itself was an OS no lol. Just as NeXT was a kernel that derived and evolved into Mac OS X. Either way though. You'll find that people who refer to Linux in general are referring to most distros that spawned from the kernel. So to say that Android is Linux-based isn't out of line.
You paid 750 bucks for this?!
I can buy a budget gaming laptop and still have leftovers! Just saying...
Keep in mind that Tweeterman put money down on this years before he made this video. Roughly around 2007, where the idea for the project was pretty ambitious for the time. By the time it came out, technology itself caught up to it and it’s concept was fairly outdated by then.
Very interesting that linux has a hanheld game console. I wish new how to use emulaters, great unboxing/review.
This thing looks pretty amazing, honestly. I can see how a lot of people would prefer something different, but if you know your way around Linux this thing is basically a playground with a bunch of brand new slides.
Tweeterman, can you review the GPD Win?
It's similar to the Open Pandora console, but it uses Windows 10!
Just watched one of your older videos. Just wondering if you're the same person because the other one sounded like a kid
He is, I thought he was a kid in the older videos, until that one video he proved his age with his driver's licence.
Do you plan on buying and reviewing the GCW Zero?? It look's like it might be the definitive open source handheld, and i'd like to hear what you have to say about it.
Does it run gimp and inkscape (0.92.2+)
and blender and FreeCAD?
What is the resolution?
Can you operate the cursor w/ the analogue joystics?
Nice video. Greetings
you got ripped off dude
I was pretty much still a kid when this came out with no job, so there was no way I could get one of these, but looking back at it it does look like they bungled things up. Like a couple other people have said, the Steam Deck pretty much succeeds where this thing fails. But to be fair the Steam Deck was backed by a multi-billion dollar company while this thing was crowd funded, so Valve obviously had more resources in developing the Steam Deck.
plus a full decade of improvements in tech to where even most modern android devices can do what this device was doing in their sleep.
Seriously though, i can play GameCube and PS2 games decently on my Samsung A54..... and that's a BUDGET phone. lol
Holy shit, we have come so far. Might wanna try and find some for myself
Can you download games from web browser such as minecraft? Is thus console powerfull enough to play it?
Just curious :)
The price has dropped on the 1GHz device. But it's definitely a niche device and isn't for everyone. But it's certainly a treasure if you really are a Linux fan and understand that Linux can be run on virtually any processor and thus realize you have a fully functional PC; the possibilities are endless (As far as emulating and creating; it's certainly not a future-proof device but more so a time machine into the past). It's an acquired taste if you will. (I saw someone was actually able to emulate Android on it as well!)
If it was cheaper it'd be pretty decent to use
+marage556 Aye but the touchscreen would drive me insane. :) Hope the next one has a better system. :)
Hey tweet I've been following you for a while and you are awesome
Can it play DS/3DS roms on a USB stick? If so how much storage will it need?
600 for this crap.
For real? Holy shit, just get an new 3ds for that or a ps4 wtf.
New 3ds is only 200 so you could get 3!
this video is 2012
Well yeah.
600 dollars in 2012 meant alot for a piece of garbage
Had it been released anywhere around the time they originally intended it would have been more impressive. As it is, and even Lactobacillus Prime agrees with me (he graciously sent me one) it now is more of and oddity / conversation piece. Fun to play with as are all these opensourced handhelds and it has a lot of great stuff packed in, great screen etc, but now with more powerful and flexible Android and other gaming handhelds it is hard to justify the price, confguring and using just not as simple as other devices, it would be worth it if it could do more but that is not really the case. THAT said I only recently got around to properly configuring the wifi and the .pnd files it uses (much like .apk files for ANDROID) are still supported pretty well. I love having had the opportunity to get my hands on one and I STILL definitely plan a better video/look at it at some point. I can see how it could definitely frustrate or annoy the more casual user or person expecting and simply out of box experience but then again that was not really the intended audience, it is a fun and interesting devices for those who like to tinker.
I've always wanted one of these!
Is it just me or should we invest some serious time in working on building OS's that are up instantly. My PSP 1000 even from cold boot takes 2-seconds (really less) to load the OS and is ready.
However, my main question is, can you run PICO-8 on here ?
Absolute bag of shit, so glad I didn’t back this back in the day
install retropie
I could not agree more with you! I would love to have one! This blows my mind!
will you do a review for the dragonbox pyra when it comes out?
DS Dad brought me here.
I can easly find a PSP with 40 € and I can emulate pretty much the same amount of games.... and yeah, the PSP runs also PSP games :P
Im glad im not the only one who does this :) I feel really bad, there's alot of people who have a PSP and don't know about it's potential.
But a PSP isn't a full Linux PC. I wish people would understand this isn't just for emulation
Arctic true but the price seems rather steep for what you get.
***** its important to understand why it is expensive. These are not Chinese made devices, they are made in Germany and not mass produced. The workers are paid a fair wage and they are producing these the hard way since they are a extremely small company.
***** also these are outdated now. They are making a successor to the pandora which is releasing this year, it is called the Dragonbox pyra.
nice video as always!
dude this actually looks ok where did u get it and how much was it cash wise? please respond quick
can you get on steam ?
Thats what i'm wondering. And if it can get steam what games could it play?
dont now
tf 1 and 2 hafe life counter strike duke nukem
3d worms POSTAL 2
butt thats not too bad :P
thers more games
I WANT ONE :D
I'm selling one on ebay
www.ebay.com/itm/Open-pandora-mini-computer-/181264138545?pt=Video_Games&hash=item2a342f4131

www.ebay.com/itm/Open-pandora-mini-computer-/181268766168?pt=Video_Games&hash=item2a3475ddd8
way cheaper than on the site :O
come to my channel if you like tweeterman i do the same thing BUT DON'T WAIT 2 YEARS TO UPLOAD A NEW VIDEO
for how much did you sell it?
Did you pre order the OUYA? if not do you plan on buying one?
it seems like it would be perfect for you.
Good review, crap device.
dude, this thing is 9 years old
+Benjamin Buljevic It was kinda outdated even then due to huge delays, but hopefully their next console will do better.
IsoMacintosh it wasnt made for high end gaming or things like that, it was made to play some retrogames and simple applications.
Benjamin Buljevic It was very much made to be a full computer and emulator machine, but due to outdated specs it couldn't emulate more modern consoles. That wasn't a good thing since it was also very expensive.
But it seems like the second try could be more successful since the Pyra seems to be quite capable and on schedule.
+GrimeHubTV A smartphone is still more limited than the ours, specs aren't everything. There is also the matter of optimization and OS weight. The version of Linux they have for the pyra should be minimal resource usage wise. 720p is perfect on a 5 inch screen and 1080p would not down the battery life and power. Would you rather have a 10 hour battery life and better performance or barely noticeable (if at all) resolution difference?
The best device to play emulators on is the PSP.
NiallTheAwesome I had one, and i thought that as well, but now i'm looking to see if i'll be able to get this thing. Some guy said only 40 Pandoras will be in stock soon, and then they'll move on to a new model, Pyra, with a 1080p touchscreen, same (pretty much) layout, and a more powerful processor. PSP was best back when the PSP hacking scene was still alive, now it's pretty much abandoned for the crapphones. The Pandora/Pyra is to change that.
Nah. Android phone is the best for emulators.
+Ty Brown I'm not sure so sure, The psp has better hardware specs than the 3ds so the psp will still probably be better.
PS vita way better
Leandro Suzano PS Vita has emulators?
did you make sure you have the correct roms version. mame has different versions and the roms have to be version compatible
there are v good support forums on the pandora website that help with setting up the device, exploring what it can do.
People need to realize that this thing was announced at a time that had not yet seen the rise of tablets or even smartphones. Back then it seemed like a good idea. And it is superior to tablets in that it has actual buttons and doesn't require an external controller.
Too bad that one asshole on the team had to fuck up so hard that this device never even had a chance.
+Doncornuto who was that and what did he do?
+Aaron Gosselin As far as I recall he wasted quite a lot of money people had put down for preorders and because of that he couldn't supply people with the actual product once it was out. Another member of the team had to jump in and pay out of his own pocket just to make sure that people actually got their Pandoras.
Needless to say people didn't take lightly to this.
The guy that fixed up the mess seems to be the one developing the successor, hopefully it'll be ok this time... (HOPEFULLY)
These are getting hard to find online for some reason.
computerkid1416 because they have been out from 2008, they are starting to become the new dinosaurs.
do u know of any emulator that works for the hey you pikachu game?
Where did you get this and for how much?
You paid 300+ USD for this? This looks really cheap and poorly made :P.
Keep in mind at this point its a six+ year old design (Original designs in 2007-ish, then the revision which is when they offered the upgrade to 1 ghz processor) and the build quality is fairly high on most units. Granted at the same time the keyboard infuriates me to no end. Basically if it had come out when it was first designed, it would have been amazing, but it just took too god damned long from design to production. While when it did come out, it was more powerful than cellphones and tablets, it's more or less left in the dust now due to the technology marching on.
Funfact, Android is based on Linux
yeah its a phone version of Linux
Leopold Productions
Errr kinda
+Christian Silvermoon... Funner facts: Linux is a fork of Unix, and OS X is based on Unix. iOS is based on OS X. So both Android phones and iPhones are running a variant of 'nix. :)
Stevland Ambrose
Actually, Linux was based on the ideals and design concepts of UNIX, but it is not a fork, A fork implies the source code for UNIX was used, which is incorrect.
Thank you very much, I just ordered mine for a little over $750, I need that kind of reassurance.
Tweeterman, did you hold down ALT and drag the window up?
This is so cheaply made...
Good video but such a waist of money such a crappy device.
Waist? Like the waist that holds up your pants?
Ya bro. Dont waist my time
why can't any of you morons in the comment section spell "waste"?
Literally an Xbox Is that supposed to be an ironic WAIST of my time?
Miguel Romero Hernandez Wasn't talking to you.
Those things have become curiously hard to come by these days. And they're also releasing a new device... Oh this is going to be good
i'm fairly sure it was hit or dropped on the left sometime during packaging or delivery.
Man i gotta say this system sucks.
Thanks for the review. Sorry it wasn't what you hoped for.
What is a "knw" (or how is it spelled) console?
My DS2 controllers L1 button has that problem, but it still works. Might I suggest replacing the microswitch with another?
I know this is really old but you should be able to alt + click&drag the N64 settings window up to get to the lower buttons if you haven't figured it out yet.
Where was the review?
Cant you hit enter while trying to change the video settings in the one you cant see?
It is a pretty neat thing though. I'd like to get my hands on one someday. Portable XFCE sounds lovely.
Hey I am returning to this video with some information that might be helpful to you. You got the wooden box because you preordered from Craig, who gave his preorders a wooden box. You got pretty lucky to receive yours because Craig had fallen over a 100 behind on shipping the preorders and some people had lost their money. The reason why you got a UK charger and not an American charger is because you mistakenly preordered from the UK store when there was actually two American, or import store that you could had ordered from. Michael (ED) would had shipped you the proper charger adapter as he did for me, thankful, but I did not get the wooden box. The way to scroll down on a screen that has no scroll bar is you push right trigger, left mouse click and then scroll down.
URLs where did get your rom's?
how does one find one of those mythical devices?
jesus christ, 4 years. I remember you mentioning this back when your voice was still a bit ... fruity. Can't wait to come home and watch this!!
does it run Gentoo or Fedora Linux?
From this to aya neo steam deck, handheld pc's evolved so much
With the programming function can i run a server off of it?
you should try hitting the tab button.. to get to that ( ok ) button to get to change the settings
Generally speaking when you get something like the Pandora you have to hit the forums to get everything working ok, its the nature of the beast. The MAME issue at least is was likely a rom set issue. Unfortunately pretty much anyone who has ever used MAME on any system has run into that issue when first setting it up.
Did you sell it in the end?
how much is it, and where did u get it?
Can you switch it to Windows?
for getting to the ok button keep hitting tab until the button is highlighted. I don't have a pandora, but that should work in Linux.
hmmm, looks nice, but I already have a vita and archos gamepad, should I get it?
How much is the pandora handheld?
Hey update from 5 years in the future, i came back to tell you the gpd win, and the gpd win 2 both reminded me of this video,
2 years in the future gpd win max
where is this on amazon
I was just watching your old vids holy crap. your voice
were can i buy this?
its actually a small laptop smaller than a normal one and Pandora made psp recovery batteries too
i want one :(
BTW high five on all your hard work to get it!
In Linux, if the window extends off the screen, you hold down alt and click and drag anywhere on the window. Holding alt allows you to drag the window without clicking on the title bar. Hold alt, drag up, and then you'll be able to hit the OK button.
How did get one
hey try dragging down from top/left top/right or just top idk try datt
Can it open .exe files, as a normal PC?
Loved the end
I think that having a pocket 10 hours lasting emulator (of any computing device of up to middle 90s) is quite awesome. The only problem is the price: I have been waiting 4 years to have money for it.
Wow, seems great, with linux on it you can do everything you want. To solve the problem you have that doesn't let you save the configuration I have thought 2 things you can try to do: 1 Try to change the default resolution and/or the density so the panel can fully appear 2nd Conect to another screen if it is capable of doing so.
Hope it helps
Or you could mod an older switch to stream and play your PC games over the internet (or just on your home network if you don't have a NVIDIA graphics card).
The Switch was not a thing nearly a decade ago... 🤦♂️
@@nerdloftgaming No shit lmao
have you ever tried pinch zoom like on a phone since its a touch screen should allow u to xoom out and see ok
+Gingy and The Crew the touchscreen is resistive, not capacitive, so no multitouch support.
thats sad
What PSP do you have? My fat PSP runs all but a few SNES games perfectly, and the only N64 games that are very unplayable that I've found are the zelda games.
Lets be real, hes got more important stuff to do in his adult life than inform a fanbase. CZcamsrs come and go and it seems tweeterman is on his way out. Respect that if you were a real fan.
uhh its opensource and runs linux and other emulators without any hacking or buying of extra hardware?
To drag windows on Linux, with your keyboard map I assume FN+START [ ALT ] and then pick the window up by any 'inert' part and drag. This will allow you to drag the windows top off screen to see the [OK] [CANCEL] ;0)
Can you run PICO-8 on here ?
Can this run runescape or runescape private servers for on the go play?
Can you use it for steam
