- 20 years in storage?!? Today I found out I won a storage unit I bid on, now to figure out why they stored this stuff for up to 20 years?!? Today's mystery unpacking adventure!
- Zábava
The fact that 2002 was 2 decades ago is still mind boggling. I remember 2002, it felt like it was just 7 years ago not 20
Agreed. It's sooooo weird getting older.
VHS Recorded TV: In the late 80s/early 90s we lived in Japan. My sister-in-law would send Care Packages to my daughters with popcorn and VHS Recorded TV Shows, since they lacked American Programs, where we lived in a Japanese town.
She initially made the recordings with the Commercials edited out, but the kids let her know they really missed seeing the commercials, so they knew what was going on back in the states, so she shifted gears and started including them in.
Storage locker cleanouts are so sad for me. Someone's entire life in a little box that they hoped to get back someday, spent a lot of money maintaining, and then had to abandon. So sad that this may be the archeological remains of a life that went off the rails.
or they died.
Sometimes people just bring a storage like that to a yard sale junk down yard sales yard sales yard sales or relative giveaway a bunch of stuff until they put it in storage
Based on these contents, this person wasted a lot of money on rental fees.
This is how I feel also. I am a collector and the thought of someone just seeing it as stuff and not my carefully collated collection makes me sad.
Makes me sad also. My son passed away in 2020. I was paying on his unit and mine. I had some employees that worked with me as it got expensive. Then came a horrible man that treated me like he was a bill collector and not a nice one. When I went to pay it he had already took it off line and sold it the next day. It was like loosing my son all over again. I just was not ready to go through it yet and now this part of his life is gone to me. The buyer would not talk to me either!
I remember when my ex was a nurse in the Navy reserves. We had been fighting so much that we split the bills and she had her own bedroom for the last 2 years. We had a 10 year old. Suddenly she told me she was leaving and never coming back; we divided all our stuff verbally and that was that -- she left. I was a single dad. I could not afford to stay there alone so I moved, in the process I got a storage room and put all her stuff in there. My new rent bill with my apartment and her storage fit my budget better than a bigger apartment. I found out years later that she had been activated and went to IRAQ. She never communicated that to me, all I knew was that she had moved "back east." I had decided it was best not to get rid of ANYTHING that was hers. In the end she did 2 [15 month?] tours in Iraq. But then she moved to Chicago and lived there with a friend for a while. So in all it was about 4 - 5 years that I paid $80 a month. Now that is not precise, but I spent about $4-5000 to store about $4-500 worth of stuff. When she did return for her stuff we put the whole unit in her name, she took a few things that she wanted, went back to Chicago, and never made a single payment, the unit was soon repo'd. -- It all made perfect financial sense in that situation, can you imagine if I didn't have any of her stuff??? There would have been hell to pay.
I would have done a double check on those milk crates. The older plastic/fiberglass ones with the metal rim around the top can bring some good money. More if they have advertising for dairies or stores that are not in business anymore. I made enough at auction to cover most of my bills on just a bunch of square milk crates that were still in good shape.
Pretty low value in terms of time invested to sell, around here at least. Milk crates look to be selling for about $5 a pop, these looked to be almost all non-collectable crates as well, not much dairy farm history around this part of the world. That said a lot of 20-30 listed for $100 might move and be worth the bother, buts its borderline. Pretty sure the video poster places a reasonable high value on his time though, as far as I can tell he is relatively successful in his business.
Anything that’s useable and not contaminated, don’t take it to the dump- post it online for free and have somebody come pick it up. Make it a priority to never take things to the dump. Things you think are garbage maybe be things somebody else can make use of in ways you never thought possible (there are people who would love to take the old VHS tapes even just to see what’s actually on them, or they can be used for art projects, etc.).
Exactly. Throwing good/reusable items is a HUGE PET PEVE of mine.
All very time consuming and at a cost ,mabey u could go get them from Alex and put them up online and spend u time and money doing that ,?????
You can't always sell those recorded VHS tapes. It's illegal if you infringe upon copyrights. Unless Canada has different laws than the USA.
Or Nursing Homes 🤷♀️ Movies bring back memories and entertain 😊
You're wrong about VHS. There is a growing demand for them because of nostalgia. Especially the ones still in rental boxes. They are worth checking out. Some people even have them graded! LOL.
Yes and cassette tapes! My dad has dementia and can't learn to use modern music technology. He loved his music. I thought I would get him a 'walkman' and some tapes. (Showing my age lol). They are getting really expensive now though.
@@rainesbobo There are people that get those to extract commercials and TV only programs/releases that you can't find on other medias.
@@pippipants That's really cool. I've never heard of people using them to help people with dementia, but that makes sense. All the more reason to preserve. I still have all my tapes, CD's VHS, and even records. I still have my walkmans and portable cd player. We still use VHS and DVD's at home with our kids. Trying to protect them from filth on TV and Internet for as long as possible.
Someone paid money to store that and never took it back home. Incredible! Where I live there are storage units everywhere!!
There is absolutely no chance you are sending tins of jewelry to the auction without looking through them 😂
Don't scientists these days say that if you slap your hand onto a table enough times, there's a greater than zero percent chance that it will pass right on through. That's about the same odds I would place on him sending all that jewelry straight to auction. Lol
especially after finding the rolex box, you think he's gonna ignore what's in the tins? lol
That ring looks like it might be the sort that is meant to change colour if you are in love (, or maybe if you are a bit hot).
as far as i know there is not a single bob ross that was ever sold. he gifted 3 or 4 pictures to family and friends. his publishing company still exists and they own every picture he painted for the series. its 3 paintings per episode. this info came from one documentary
FYI: I’m a huge fan of both Bob Ross and his son Steve. Everything you said is in fact true. Sad part is, is the company has done nothing positive for Steve or Bob. It’s really disgusting.
I laughed so hard at the kid lingering or peeing on the stove. ❤Thanks Alexander for always being real ❤
He was watching for the water to boil…
Reminds me of a scene in War of the Roses where Michael Douglas pisses on the fish. Must watch.
I had the same reaction 😂😂
Can I buy the 'ELVIS' lamp please. Not. I've to but I live in W.A.
You caught me off guard with your dad joke, and the kid is peeing in the stove waiting to eat!!!! Laughed out loud!!!!!
He missed one. "That was just a box of pooh"
Storage unit finds are my favorite. It’s like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get. They are interesting to watch.
Sometimes storage places throw everything people leave behind when they move out into one unit and then sell it off as a lock cut off. It saves the room in their dumpsters and gets rid of junk. Just giving you a heads up so you won't be taken advantage of.
A friend was moved by a company paid by the army. When she unpacked at the other end she found the kitchen garbage lovingly packed up ready for her to throw away. 😂
I pack for a moving company. My neighbor who was married to a guy in the military tells me the same story.
@@andreabradley5837 If its here, we move it. Deciding what to move or not move is above their pay grade. Plus you never know what garbage some wacko considers valuable. Just-move-it-all is the most reasonable policy, all things considered.
I’m 71…used to have a manual typewriter. So thrilled when word processing came along, lol.
I’ve had a storage unit for a few years.for us it was when we gave up our condo and living out of our semi . It served a purpose of storing things I didn’t want to loose but now we have land and a storage shed it’s time to clear it out and move the stuff home
The seat cushion was a specialty wheelchair cushion to help prevent sores. They are expensive and that’s probably why they saved it. The fingerless gloves were also probably used to protect the hands when using the wheelchair.
Yeah I’m afraid this was an elderly persons home and they may have had to go into a nursing home 😢
I had one of those puppet monkeys when I was in 3rd grade I think (80's). Love that thing. Her name was Martha and the arms and legs would velcro around the body like she was holding onto me.
Makes me think of something that might have been left after a relative died that was just packed up and put into a storage unit until they could sort through it but that sorting day never came.
Also could be just someone moving house and didn't want to take all their junk items with them, so they stored it to sort later but never got around to it.
@@VinterbukserYes this is fairly common, where an older person (or couple) downsizes to an assisted living facility and can't bear to part with their possessions, but also can't fit them in their new space or find friends/family willing to take them.
LOL! Alex, your humour cracks me up (the guy leaning on the store).
I agree it is a sad proposition to leave a storage unit and never have the means to return or the money to pay for keeping someone else's life accumulated treasures and never know the reason it was there in the first place. It is really sad and the way things get packed can give a clue to a possible situation of just having to move or being evicted. I could never do what Alex has done because sometimes it is just sad and nothing more.
Antique Cabbage Cutter: many of those old mandolins style cutters had a second part, which looked like a 4-sided frame that the cabbage head sat in, to keep your fingers away from the blades. It fit in side slots on the large board, to slide back and forth smoothly. Once separated from the cutter, the smaller part doesn’t look like much of anything, so it often gets tossed away.
That’s exactly what my family used it for.
Okay I can address the cushion that went in the wheel chair, they can be expensive! There is special visions for patients that have bedsores! So it may look like trash to you but for someone it cost them a lot and meant the world to their loved one to be comfortable, possibly in their last days.
How much is a used, torn up, dirty one worth? I've never seen one in an antique store, so I have no idea what they may be worth as a treasured heirloom.
We paid $500 US for a large one for our wheelchair.
As a rehab nurse, I understand what you’re saying about the wheelchair cushion. But I also know the horrors of contamination they go through, so there’s that.
Don’t get rid of the milk crates. They are eight dollars new. Good for the garden to cover new plants. They shade them and protect them from the wind and sun and animals.
When you said you had to be out by the end of the day my anxiety rose and I was wondering why you kept sorting. I would have just moved it all home at that point and continued there
It’s never boring watching your videos,Alex…😄 You will certainly get your money back but it was a lot of work! Be careful with the storage units.😉
always, always, always dig through and empty out the boxes of old papers and random clothing before you donate. in the 90s i used to hide my rolls of silver coins in them
Keep sewing cabinet value $125+. It is SO CLEAN inside, which is high value for sewing. Have someone help you fix the exterior. What a prize!
That Little Ceasars' stuffed animal is so cute! Thank you for posting all of your adventures for us to share in!
I like all the albums and anything music and also the Elvis lamp. I would like that spool!
The cushion and red gloves were most likely for the wheelchair user. The "drying rack" was probably a cart thing that may have been used for pushing while shopping. Thank you for sharing your adventures, love your videos.
Yes, the cushion has the typical shape of a wheelchair seat and these do get well used.
All this storage rummage makes great casual viewing. I vastly prefer it to the staged "Storage Wars" stuff that was on all the cable channels a decade ago.
Sorry about your unit not being worth much. But I sure did enjoy the video. Thanks for showing it's not always roses and caviar
The book with the mom and girl cooking was my home economics book in 1965 in Oklahoma. How interesting.
U CRACK ME up! Boy peeing by the stove waiting for dinner. GOLD
Omg….I had a yellow version of the wall oven, pictured on the experiences with food book, in my house, built mid 1950s, until 2 years ago
. . . I can't place that puppet, but so familliar. . . makes me think it was one of those that a kid could attach his hands and feet to and move it around that way.
Can never have enough eagle sculptures 🦅
The longer you store things, the more they charge! In the end you usually spend far more on rent than the items are worth, or could make from them. If you don't want it in your house right now you are probably not going to want it in the future either-or actually sell it. Don't do it except as a short term emergency because of a trip or move or renovation or death.
I have been a storage manager for 20 years and you hit the nail on the head.
Taking a pee on the stove. Ha ! Oh Alex.
Good luck. As always, I hope you do well and at least make a bit above what you paid to make up for your time and effort. It always amazes me what people will put in storage and pay year after year to keep it there. I know they can't all be home runs, but you never know what an Elvis collector may see that they don't already have and REALLY want! I love the sewing box, my grandmother had a similar one and I always thought it was so cool.
I'm pretty nervous for you the way you're digging in the bin right now 20 min in. There could be a knife with the blade side up, Alex. Wait until you have the time to take everything out one-by-one and move it to a different location so that you can see what it is before you pick it up. 🙂 Edit to add: WHOA did I just have a premonition? 22:39 Alex shows us his band aid.
I would love to see a video of you and Melissa going through the jewelry!
I think the red gloves are the ones used to protect hands while self propelling the wheelchair and that cushion went in the wheelchair
OMG loved the stove joke........keeping it fun is awesome. I do this too for my biz and sometimes ya just have to laugh.
I bought a new Gerber multi
tool. It was wrapped in plastic with a warning card about removing all the oil before using the tool. I ignored the warning .Opened the knife and immediately dropped it on the floor. I picked it up and realized I had severed my fingerprint off my index finger. I reattached it and understood why my mom wouldn't let me own a knife.
How did you reattach your fingerprint?
hope you washed the oil off before reattaching it. Mom's know their kids.
@@magickmoi1261 It cut down the bone and was still attached at the fingertip. I used liquid skin , superglue and duct tape. Took 2 years for the pain to subside and new nerve growth for touch feeling.
😂
@@Hanzyscure seriously been there... I work as a meat clerk and the knives are wicked! If I ever slice my whole fingerprint off I'm going to reattach it upside down just to be weird... 😂😂😂
I love all the Elvis stuff!!
These old sewing box is my dream, really pretty thing for a yarn-maniac crocheter🤩
Enjoyed. I like seeing what people store, Often junk , Sometimes treasure, Very fun.
I see that Tesla! I should've got the white... I went with black. So excited to see its official reveal!!! 😍🥰
Micro machines! My favourite toy to steal from my brother and play with. Lol.
That pad he threw on the thing saying the things people keep, that looks like the pad that wheel chair users need. They're expensive so they use them until they literally no longer can. My significant other of 8 years has a parent that is wheel chair bound. He has a pad in the same shape. It's kinda molded to him and again very expensive so he still uses it. Each of his chairs has a pad that stays with it because he likes how it is with each chair. Almost wonder if a family member passed away and family packed up what was left and had forgotten about it our passed away themselves.
Does anyone laugh at some of Alex’s little comments? The Cosby sweater did it for me! Also the book of food comment about the boy 😂😂
Alex, your finger is a perfect example of why they say to "keep out of the reach of children" LOL 😆😂
Still love watching storage purchases. :-)
Interesting! Thanks, Alexander! 😊
Great unit actually, I find that what people find collectable very informative and their lifestyle. You should have saved the buckets of jewelry to go through with Melissa, she probably would have found some good stuff in there. I still have my sewing box like that and love it too. Anyways, have a great day and don't use the knifes you find in storage units.
Lol. You warned your wife the garage may get a bit full... but she is a trooper. Dude, you have like a 6 car+ mechanics huge garage. $4 mill homes don't have that big of a garage (on average).
It’s always fun following you.
Love those sewing boxes.. used to make heirloom baby and toddler clothes. Never had one, but do love them. I do have an old Singer pedal.
Watching you go through life one handed continues to amaze me.
Lots of work, but still a great video, hopefully things will sell well and you can still make a profit!
Thanks for your video. It was fun looking. Hope you get a bit of profit at least.
One last comment. I used to collect costume jewelry from the 30s-early res. things I bought for as little 5-15 bucks are now worth hundreds…the first level of that stuff didn’t look very promising, but you never know. Love your show!
I enjoyed the video love looking at all the stuff with you don’t give up we enjoy them anyway thanks again and I’ll catch you on the next one
It is was it is! Thank you for taking me along 😮 🤷🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️
Oh my gosh, I saw that Red Sovine Album with Teddy Bear… I danced with my Dad at my wedding to Daddy’s Girl from Red Sovine….wow what memories seeing that album brought up, Dad has passed on but I miss him everyday
Once I saw the Band-aid I guessed that the Leatherman's scalpel had got you. Oddly enough, I have a diagonal cut, almost exactly 28 yrs ago, from the base of my right thumbnail extending down a good inch and a half down the finger. Ask me how I got it ;-) Great vid as always, hope those Atari games help cover costs. And with Elvis being huge right now thanks to the movie, you should be able to get some decent coin!
They all can't be home runs Alex, as long as you make your money back. The locker didn't cost an arm and a leg, just nearly a finger...sry, bad joke, hoping you're ok. You should have had gloves on. Keep the great vids coming.
Enjoyed the video thanks for sharing
I had an accordion sewing box like the one shown. Just gave it away within the last 2-3 years after owning it for approx. 40 yrs. However, at some point the legs became very wobbly and I took them off.
fingers crossed the sale exceeds expectations. Thanks for another great video. ouch. knives are sharp...
I need that Elvis lamp!
It’s broken, the “touch” is burnt out.
@@Mountains2Kill I still need it! Lol :D
I love that tiny sewing machine. Just the kind of thing I would buy
Don't feel bad, Alex. I sliced the corner of my thumb off, _TWICE_ , while using a mandoline slicer without the part that holds the food for you. 🙄 Both times were on holidays when we had guests over 😄. Luckily I didn't bleed into the food or serve anyone a roasted Corner Of Thumb.👍👀
Any VHS tapes are sort after in Australia as one of our popular TV shows that ran from the 70’s lost all their master tapes somehow so they are always seeking episodes that were taped by people.
I would've liked to have seen what was in that box marked kitchenware that was in the back of your truck. I love kitchenware! This was fun Alex! Thank you!
It’s amazing what people will spend their money on, bag it or box it, pay for containers, pay to store it and then abandon or forget about it. But what amazes me more is that someone will bid and buy all that stuff. And then hope that someone else will be willing to buy it for a third time. Conspicuous consumption at its absolute worst.
Always interesting what you find wether in storage shed or house .
💓💘💝💖❤watching your videos, thank you for sharing and have a great day!
So fun to see!🌛🌕🌜🕯🦉🪶
Thanks Alex, still a great show regardless that the unit was a bit of a flop, keep it coming as I love watching your channel ❤❤❤❤❤❤
wow, lots of treasures .... best wishes
OMG... i want that Elvis lamp!!💜💜💜❤
I watched my ex husband play and beat The Legend of Zelda over a year. 😆I used to know where all the hidden treasures were. Good memories.
At least you got an interesting video from this adventure. Tough luck for resale items. Keep a goin'. 👍
I use to manage a storage facility. We had a tenant renting 2 10X25 units. After years of paying rent, he gave us permission to open the units for a moving company to give him an estimate to ship everything from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire. $8000. He said no and went back to paying rent.
an estimate
Love your job
I also really like the Red Rose tea things!
Thanks Alex!
The square dirty thing you asked why they keep stuff like that, it's for the wheelchair... otherwise when you sit in a wheelchair without it it hurts.... 😃
Awesome again 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Omg my Dad had that same sign but smaller...
Definitely good idea to keep that.
I would want it for my father, has come into mid stages of dementia.
Cool find
Might have been worth holding onto those VHS tapes. People collect them the same as records for the nostalgia even if they don't have a VCR. VHS is making something of a comeback and you may have been able to get $10 each for those. If there were really whole crates it could have pushed your profit up by a few hundred especially if they're auctioned online and people can buy them from a distance.
I’m in love❤ with the sewing box
Trash runs: Options where u live may vary, but here in Washington State, we have 4 basic trash options: curbside pick-up, small loads to transfer stations, dumpster rental and paying by the Ton after driving over a scale and paying per pound.
Dumpster Rentals are great for house clearing, but are impractical for storage units. Curbside is too expensive for a any large volume.
Taking it by the pick-up, when there is a lot of trash in a unit can increase costs and consume extra time, depending on fees and driving distance.
When working locally, I favor driving over the scale and paying by the pound when clearing most large units (or multiple units). Here, we pay in the $30-40 per ton range and they take mattresses as general garbage. Mattresses, like large furniture, can be problematic for folks that clear units regularly. The scales are large enough that a truck, with trailer can be weighed together and the trailer makes it easier to deal with couches and mattresses.
Additionally, since the place with the scale is a larger facility, they also take recycling (cardboard, glass, plastic and metal) free and are a drop off point for e-waste. All of which turn up in storage units and disposing of them for no cost, means more profit.
Be kind to one another. Stay safe. Love to all
I sortof fell for that cheeky cast lion. 😃❤️🦁
Well, I know you have to make a living at this and often you really do score but the really great news is that things that are still viable don’t just get dumped.
